She was walking our dog on one of the river trails in a national park that's nearby.
From the ridge just above she was set upon by two German Shepherds who were let off leash. Well, more accurately, she stood firm and held our dog aloft while the other two dogs lunged.
One Shepherd clamped onto her hip and the other one bit her in the tricep.
The owners were there pretty quickly and got the dogs off.
But they never apologized. They just offered excuses for why it wasn't their fault.
Very cute little girl. A great breed, and lucky to be extremely rare in dog rescue. I think we have had only a couple in the last 5 years. They always get adopted immediately.
Is she pissed off about that girl who dressed up like a Boston bombing victim or is she still too happy about the World Series to give a shit?

The owner of those German Shepherds should be arrested. It was totally their fault: A. Because the dogs were off leash and B.the dogs were not trained to know when to bite and when to not....n-e-v-e-r if the target is not attacking the dog. C. The owners are not fit to own any protective breed, even a Sheltie. Period. I repeat, period. Most good breeders screen out assholes like those owners. I just usually try to fuck them up when I run across them.
Eric ... "fancy" or "purebred" has nothing to do with it. The owners are morons who have not trained their dogs or even spent sufficient time socializing them. God forbid they have their own kids, and raise them similarly.
A protective dog should never attack if not being attacked or his/her handler being attacked. The herding background requires this capability...a shepherding dog is useless if it is distracted by spurious stimuli.
That said, some dogs are just "other dog aggressive" and are fine around people, but not other dogs they are not thoroughly adapted to...I've owned some of those. They are fine if on leash when out in public.
The dogs you describe were not only trying to attack a smaller dog, they did attack a human. They had not been taught one damn thing, literally Lord of the Flies dogs...and in my world, better the owners be put down ... but that's not what happens, the dog raised not by his pack but by lazy and inept idiots get killed.
If your wife is right, and these really were "fancy" GSD's...then they'd cost between $1500 and $2500 for a puppy. Never ceases to amaze me why some fools pay up to $5000 for dogs and teach them nothing.
Finally...you said it was in a National Park. It is against the law to unleash any dog in a National Park. You should have reported and prosecuted the owners of these dogs. As it is the event is likely to recur and the owners will still be fucking morons.
I miss every dog and horse we've ever had. Each one takes a piece of us with them. Each new one finds another piece to adopt in us. I guess it is a sad affair that I understand animals, domestic and wild, far better than I do humans.
Thank you, Palladian for the sweet picture and Ken in SC and Aridog for the words. They touch my heart like poetry. I too celebrate as unique and miss every animal that has been part of our family and shared our abode.

This brings tears to my eyes because my Boston Terriers are gone, Abbie and Franklin. I miss them every day.
