It is a beautiful gothic church, well worth visiting.
I was talking recently to a WWII vet about the Pisa Duomo. He was there at liberation and described the cross section of the walls and how they had bundles of reeds behind the plaster. Interesting stuff.
That picture goes back to a time when this country and our allies would bomb the fuck out of our enemies to win a war. We had no qualms about killing old men, women and children. Total, complete destruction of their population centers.
There's a reason why our later wars have lasted so long.

That cathedral was kept standing for a reason, the bombers used it as landmark.

They tried to hit it, but the bombardier would think of pinups and drop his load prematurely.
