Hey Sixty, we expect some SPECTACULAR pictures from you on the solar eclipse date. Pretty sure you're in the TOTAL eclipse corridor. On the other hand how spectacular can a picture of darkness be?
Mr. Pic, I am actually outside of the totality corridor, but it should be a good partial eclipse here, so long as it is not cloudy.
And Chip, thanks for the compliment - coming from you that means a lot.
Two stories - many years ago, 40 or so in any case, we had a partial eclipse over Sunnyvale. What I noticed was that the sunlight, passing between the leaves of the trees, formed perfect little versions of the eclipse when the sunlight hit the sidewalk - imagine each gap in the leaves as forming a pinhole camera and that might make sense of what was going on. If conditions permit I will try to get a picture of such a phenomenon.
Yesterday morning I was out in the back yard and two flocks of geese flew over - just above the tree tops - I mean they were flyin' low, and the light from the rising sun was hittin' 'em just right - but of course I didn't have my phone with me, and even if I had I would have needed some good reflexes to capture what I saw. I will try to catch that again, but one never knows where wild geese will lead.

Cool! It shows a lot better in the big version.

And thanks, CL, for your scientific description of that picture. I never saw it that way before.
