Portrait of an artist, Pool with two figures, David Hockney

I am really digging the paintings that CBD posts for discussion on Ace.

Each time I see one I think, "Perfect." My impulse is muck it about.

That Hockney painting does capture the Hollywood Hills. I like what you did to turn it into a gif.

The Hockney painting itself is also pretty gay. I do not mean it to be negative, it just is and in a slightly disturbing way. Is a man staring at woman disturbing? Usually not, but sometimes yes. The painting has a certain vibe to it.

Is Hockney a better painter than Harring. I would say yes, but maybe I am wrong about that. Harring's work probably reaches out to more people than Hockney. Harring's work is more accessible, more child like (in a good way). Maybe I am underestimating Harring because they are just stick figures. Skill wise, Hockney is more composition that execution.

Hockney is one of those painters whose ability to solve problems - like solving the problem of sunlight in pool water, that filagree of thin white lines - is impressive, quite impressive. But that very problem solving you're so aware of, the carefulness of it short circuits an actual spontaneous leap of feeling. My subjective take needless to say. Hockney is greatly indebted to Matisse. No Matisse, no Hockney. But Hockney never lets go of the side of the pool; Matisse dares the ocean.

The center of gravity of a pool with waves on it is higher than that pool without waves.

Odd fact. You might think wave heights would average out, but you'd be solving the wrong problem.
