The Best and the Brightest Part Duex

“Among those dazzled by the Administration team was Vice-President Lyndon Johnson. After attending his first Cabinet meeting he went back to his mentor Sam Rayburn and told him with great enthusiasm how extraordinary they were, each brighter than the next, and that the smartest of them all was that fellow with the Stacomb on his hair from the Ford Motor Company, McNamara. “Well, Lyndon,” Mister Sam answered, “you may be right and they may be every bit as intelligent as you say, but I’d feel a whole lot better about them if just one of them had run for sheriff once.” It is my favorite story in the book, for it underlines the weakness of the Kennedy team, the difference between intelligence and wisdom, between the abstract quickness and verbal fluency which the team exuded, and the true wisdom, which is the product of hard-won, often bitter experience. Wisdom for a few of them came after Vietnam.” David Halberstam.

Those were the guys who got us into Vietnam. Those are the guys that got us in war after endless war. In Asia. In the Middle East. They told us that Russia was a monolithic great power. That we needed to depose the Shah of Iran. That we should invade the Bay of Pigs to overthrow Castro. That we should use th Mob to kill Castro. That Saddam Hussien was a threat to us when all he was was a threat to the House of Saud and their oil billions. That we needed to support the Muslim Brotherhood in the "Arab Spring." That we needed to depose Qaddafi. That Iran will not develop nuclear weapons if we bribe them with millions in cash. On and on and on. They have been wrong just about every time.
President Trump was elected to change that. To shake things up. To dispense with the conventional wisdom. If our so called allies do not want to pay their fair share why are we defending them when they don't want to defend themselves? Why are our boys dying while the Afghan army rapes little boys and Muslim scum cut the clits off little girls? Why?

The increase of troops in Afghanistan is a betrayal of the people who voted for Donald Trump. Who voted for an America First policy dedicated to bringing jobs and opportunity back to those Americans who had no voice. Who were attacked by the media and the elite.

Conservatism has failed and failed just as miserably as liberalism. With the House, Senate and President all in Republican "conservative" hands they could not even pass an Obamacare repeal that they ran on for seven years. They cannot fund the Wall. They can not pass anything. Not even a budget that prioritizes the people that elected this President instead of the pork barrel projects that are bred in the Swamp.

The only option if for a nationalist party that puts the interest of normal regular Americans first. Not the corporate cronies like Amazon, Apple and Google. Not the elite media controlled by social justice warriors. Not the Swamp and the Deep State and the vast government bureaucracy.

The Best and the Brightest are seizing control of the foreign and domestic policy of this Administration. They are going to lead us into more mistakes and more disasters.

You can see it coming a mile away.

Trump is "Lookin' for love in all the wrong places.." The love he never got from daddy.

The whole Kennedy crew was young, so young. They were the types who shoot to the top and never taste defeat on the way up. They thought of themselves as masters of the universe before Tom Wolfe invented the term.

I can still remember standing in front of the TV, our old Raytheon, with my Dad standing next to me and this was before Kennedy was elected, this was during the campaign for the presidency. Kennedy, as a Catholic, had to face the question about dual loyalty. Anyway, he was being asked that question and he was giving some kind of a long squirming non-answer and I can still remember how livid my Dad was, "Say it, say you're a proud Catholic and a proud American and OF COURSE you will be loyal to America!" Well, that's the kind of men they were. Not formed men.

I'm not much of a war monger, but Castro not only was eager to get those missiles he was also eager to press the button. Khrushchev, dunce that he was, had second thoughts about him

The point is not that they went after Castro. I agree with doing that.

The point is they were half ass idiots. Thinking that Cuban exiles could do it without air support. Putting out a contract with Santo and the Little Man.

Their incompetence lead directly to Kennedy's assassination and the morass of the Vietnam War.

Another endless war for nothing.

Who paid the price?

Not the best and the brightest. Not some Senators Son. It was the working class black and white who died.

The same guys who will die for worthless camel jockeys.

Trump is just trying to change the narrative from him being in the Klan to him being Commander in Chief.

I thought better of him.

I hope I am not mistaken.

Trooper York said...

I think he was sold a bill of goods by the generals. The only time he ever got press was when he bombed Syria. So he wants to repeat that.

I think it is a big mistake. Maybe even a fatal one.

The problem is very few people care about Afghanistan. Trump knows that we should get out, but he also knows that he'll win very few votes for getting us out. Because most people don't care.

I care. The Trooper cares. The guys getting shot care. Some other people care. But the vast American public doesn't really care.

I hope trump basically says: "I'm giving my Generals everything they need, they say they can win. But if they don't win soon, we're getting out".

I'm getting Frustrated with Trump, but every day I wake up and think:

Hillary or Jeb or Rubio aren't POTUS

And then I feel good.

rc, I too have your thoughts. The problem is we will see that ilk in 2020 unless this turns around, QUICKLY.

I put up a shelf over my computer desk today. Nothing major, about three square feet, a couple of brackets, four screws. But I hit the wall studs on the first fucking try. So, take that, Sixty!

OK, so it's a little higher than I had in mind but it's sturdy and level so I'm good with it.

Wood working has never been my thing.

A change of scene would do you good, Troop.

Absolute nonsense. Trump did it to make sure Poot and the Reds knew he'd do what he said he'd do.

Those are the guys that got us in war after endless war.

Baloney. The Commies were taking up where Hitler and the Nips left off. As a couple of historians have noted, the Cold War was WWIII.

The Commies started the wars, campaigns in that World War. Some we fought by proxy, as in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. A couple we fought up close and personal.

That's what happened. This alt-right/Libertarian propaganda, complete with a quote from Halberstam, the guy who fancied himself speaking "Truth to power", is just another rewrite of history.

Since I was around at the time, I can tell you ol' Lynnon wanted to be the down home Franklin Roosevelt. The Great Society was his New Deal, 'Nam was going to be his war.

And Trump got plenty of love in Gotham. Complete with 2 ex-wives.

Trooper York said...

Ed they got us in wars through their bullshit. There was always a place that we had to worry about turning commie.

So Vietnam turned commie. So what? Now they are one of our biggest trading partners.

Communism was doomed to failure. It always is. That's why we are not invading Venezuela.

Or do you want to invade Venezuela Ed?

I bet McCain and Graham and McMasters want to invade tomorrow.

Trooper York said...

We should have built a bigger Berlin wall. Because when that wall came down you know what we got?

Angela Merkel.

Trooper York said...

The Deep State is intent on repeating history. Just the way they did in Vietnam. Iraq. Afghanistan.

The elite represented by the "Best and the Brightest" want to sell the working class down the river. Allow unlimited immigration. Spend the lives of our best to justify their jobs and future TV sinecures. Spend billions on every third world rat hole that we have no business being involved in like Afghanistan.

It's been 16 years. What are a few thousand more deaths going to accomplish? Jack shit.

edutcher said...

Dude, we won Iraq and were winning A-stan when Pissy threw it away.

And the "Best and the Brightest" weren't. Robert McNamara designed the Edsel (you're too young), Dean Rusk was an idiot, Jack Kennedy was a falied Navy officer, both on Embassy Row and in the Pacific.

Trooper York said...

Ed they got us in wars through their bullshit. There was always a place that we had to worry about turning commie

Sorry, that's not true. We fought 2 wars during that period. One was Korea, which MacArthur advised Truman to go in and the other was 'Nam. Reagan secured Central America and the Caribbean with almost no loss. Same with Central Africa.

As James T Kirk said to Pavel Chekov, "Is all your history that faulty?"

Trooper York said...

What did we "win" ed?

Aren't filthy Muslims scumbags killing and raping and terrorizing?

Isn't the guys who we are training and protecting in Afghanistan raping little boys?

Aren't our soldiers being incarcerated and drummed out of the Army for stopping these perverts?

What the fuck did we win? Jack Shit.

Trooper York said...

No loss?

The billions we spent wasn't lost?

What the fuck did we gain?

Angela Merkel? Chinese factories killing American Jobs? Germany and Japan destroying our auto industry while we shelled out billions to defend them?

I know what we got. Jack shit.

You want to ignore that facts, that's your biz, but what you're talking about happened during the last 8 years.

I recently read the Korda biography of Eisenhower. Ike declined France's generous offer to join them in Vietnam. He sent a few hundred military advisers to Diem, but there was an exit clause to the commitment. Before the Bay of Pigs, he advised Kennedy to create a Cuban government in exile and to provide air cover for their forces. Ike was presented as a doddering doofus compared to the vigor and brilliance of Kennedy and his team. I think even today Kennedy ranks higher than Eisenhower in the popular esteem. There are a lot of fringe benefits to being a Democrat.

We have tried a variety of approaches in the Middle East and Afghanistan. None of them have worked. I don't think it's us. It's them...Somewhere along the way, the Prussians stopped venerating dueling scars, and the Japanese rethought the way of the bushido. The Britons no longer have any fierce need to rule the waves, and Macron doesn't look like he's ever had a single thought of gloire in his life. People and nations change. Maybe someday the Muslims will rethink this jihadi endeavor, but I don't expect it to happen in my lifetime.

I think Baghdad Ed is drinking heavily.

I'm quite sure that Trump asked the Generals what they thought about how to win the war, so we could get out, and they said "more troops". There's nothing to win there. Never has been.

At the risk of sounding like Trump; there are good people who live in Afghanistan. You need not look to far in the past to see a modern nation within its border, same with Iran. But these places were taken over by Islam and it's true misogyny. Now, to the extent they are worth fighting; it would be to return them to past, but that can't happen without first acknowledging that past and what destroyed them. We haven't done any of that, and so it is best we just pack up and go home. No amount of "just tipping scales" will matter until we as a nation name the true enemy in Afghanistan.
