Trump to address nation on Afghanistan policy Monday night By BRENT D. GRIFFITHS Politico
President Donald Trump will address the country Monday night when he will provide an update on his administration's plans for Afghanistan and South Asia.
The details of what Trump will announce are not clear, but he is expected to approve sending more troops to Afghanistan.
According to a White House statement, the president will be speaking to America's armed forces from Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia, at 9 p.m.
The announcement comes as news reports Sunday morning indicated that Defense Secretary James Mattis had a new strategy for how to fight the war in Afghanistan, a conflict the nation has been engaged in since shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.
According to the Associated Press, Mattis, speaking aboard a military aircraft on an overnight flight from Washington to Amman, Jordan, said he was "very comfortable that the strategic process was sufficiently rigorous."
Mattis, the president, Vice President Mike Pence and a number of other top officials gathered at Camp David on Friday to discuss the policy.
Earlier in his administration, the president had given Mattis authority over troop levels in Afghanistan, but Mattis has yet to significantly augment American forces there.

Have we always been at war with Eastasia or with Oceania? I'm so confused. Eff'n Generals.
Well, before condemning it, maybe we should hear it first.
Trump said he wanted A-stan over and done with. I don't think the usual Libertarian (and Democrat) solution of just walking away would do that.
Can't comment until I hear the MAN tell it.
Allen is is guys like you...patrotic Americans who serve their country...who will get hurt to make a country safe for baby rapers.
Not antifa types. Not pajama boys. Not fat old guys in a lingerie store.
It is our best who will suffer?
For what?
To stop terrorism?
How has that worked out for us so far?
I say do one of two things.
Either do the Curtis Lemay solution or simple say that this shithole is not worth a paper cut for one of our guys.
But not more of the same shit that we have been doing for the past sixteen years.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."
Trump looks for the acceptance from the Generals that he never got from daddy.
I am not against a creative solution.
The idea of using mercenaries appeals to me. They would not be subject to the code of Military Justice. They would not answer to anyone but their paymasters.
That would be effective. That would be people doing it for a good reason. Money.
Not for the Neocons.
I don't know if he is looking for acceptance. He is being bumrushed by the Democratic wing of the Republican party. The Generals just want to do with they always do. A hammer sees every problem as a nail.
Earlier Trump tried to resist McMaster and the Neocons. Bannon backed him up. He got cut out and anyone who might have reinforced the President will be silent.
The only time President Trump got positive press was when he bombed Syria. So he might figure why not turn it around and change the narrative by escalating in Afghanistan.
After all who is going to get hurt? Just some working class stiffs in the Army. Nobody cares about them. Right?
We went there, we are dying. Coincidence? I think not. Either nuke those sumbitches or get the hell out.
The reality is that there is plenty of money being made on the opium trade - as with every decision on issues like this, follow the money. Cui bono.
Exactly right Sixty.
Carpet bomb the whole country and kill them all and let Allah sort them out. If you don't have the balls for that then pull our boys out. Because they are dying for nothing.
But money. And the Deep State so they can justify their titles and big jobs.
I think the insane War on Drugs should cease. But there are too many Deep State folks involved for that to happen. And being a teetotaler, Trump would never abide. Knowing that, for decades I have said we should have mercenaries to fight this "war." Pay them by the amount of drugs they interdict. So, the Afghan mercenaries might work. Pay them for every Jihadist scalp they produce.
That is exactly right nick.
I would legalize drugs immediately. If you are stupid enough to do it then you can die.
It's up to you.
nd is going to push that. As I say, Jerry Lewis.
And I don't think he is being "bumrushed" by anyone.
the man knows his own mind. That's how he got where he is.
"The Generals just want to do with they always do. A hammer sees every problem as a nail."
I like that. Great quote.
Trump is taking the path of least resistance. Every thing he has done has resulted in massive resistance. So when the Generals, his daughter, his globalist cabinet and almost everyone else tells him to do this he is going along.
The problem is that it is going to be a miserable failure as it always is and he will get the blame. Are John McCain and Lindsey Graham and Ivanka going to blame themselves?
This is a fiasco.
Well, now, that's a nice little rewrite of history.
What changed was the election of '08. Pissy threw the country away because foreign policy bores him. He gave Idiot Joe the job of handling things.
Come on, you know this stuff as well as I do.
I don't understand why Jared and Ivanka -- who now control Trump's brain -- are so gung-ho on war in Afghanistan.
First, I don't think anyone controls Trump's brain but Trump.
Hre does want A-stan over and done with. That seems reasonable.
Trooper York said...
Rewrite of history ed? What are you talking about? What did we "win" in Iraq? What changed?
Why is it better now?
It's not.
It's not because the Mocha Messiah loused it up. We had this conversation 8 years ago.
Again, you're trying to rearrange the facts to fit the alt-right canon.
@edutcher: I wasn't serious about the control part. I was baiting Trooper.
I have lots of crow pictures from Sixty which I'll offer up after tomorrow for consumption. Maybe I'll be eating them.
Don't let 'em get your goose, CL.
