You got this?

Good for you. I thought it was the best of the night and the crowd loved it.

As I said, Fox was lousy and talked over a lot of it. The parts I heard , though, were good in content and delivery.

I was watching the game while listening to the convention on another tab.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Cruz was his usual flat self.

Listening to him I figured out what was wrong. I tweeted...

"The Problem with Cruz cadence is there no ebb and flow. Every sentence stands on its own, not building on the one before. #RNCinCLE"

Listening to him is like listening to some read a series of tweets.

Very good speech. I like Ingraham, she's a Nutmegger like myself. I didn't know she's a Pollack but I can see it. Now, she's a smart, slender, pretty, blonde. So, is she a "cunt?" I don't have a handle on how this works.

ndspinelli said...

I didn't watch any of the coverage. I hear Cruz pissed off the crowd. I think he is the type guy who needs LOTS of attention. Negative or positive is almost irrelevant to a guy w/ his psyche.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

There was one point in her speech which was great but there was one point were God was suppose to be mentioned and wasn't. I wonder if the Trump people did that.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The highlight was her line to the press... Do your job!

ndspinelli said...

The press are doing their job, at least from their perspective. They are doing public relations for Dems.

If you look at the vid, the crowd, at one point, was trying to be nice, but, when the end finally came and no endorsement, they were not happy.

Having watched it live, I have to disagree with Drudge "he was booed off the stage".

It was over, he left, there was booing (Trump had just come into the hall for the Trump family vid and there was a lot of noise generally).

FWIW, Fox, which has not been a tub-thumper for Trump, said RNC ripped Cruz' speech. This was a riff off Bill Hemmer's tweet that the RNC called him (Cruz) "classless".*

He talked about freedom and that got some cheers, but it was building the wall that got the big yell.

I've seen conflicting reports whether the speech was vetted. If it was and Trump let it pass, he may have figured the reaction would go against Cruz.

The morning after, it appears he may have been right. If so, Ted Cruz is done politically.

* Saw a quote attributed to MSLSD, "We just watched Ted Cruz do the one thing no one has been able to do: unite the Republican party behind Trump."

Tried to track it down, but can't find it. If it's for real (and I'm a tad skeptical), he can kiss TX in '18 a fond farewell.

A befuddled Spinelli asks about Laura Ingram. So, is she a "cunt?" I don't have a handle on how this works. Only if she acts like one and is a self centered, narcissistic bitch who makes everything about her and wants to be the center of all attention. You know.....like Megyn Kelly. I would have though you would have learned this by High School.

@ ed

We watched live as well and Cruz was roundly booed. When it became obvious, throughout his turgid speech (Lem nails it) that he was not only NOT going to even try to play nice and even express party solidarity, that he was actively encouraging people to "vote your conscience". That term is the one the Never Trump people were using. In other words, go vote, but vote for ME!!!

He made his speech all about HIM and while I agree with most of his speech in principle (freedom, etc) he missed a "huge" opportunity to gain the good will of those who may have liked him (a bit) in the past but voted otherwise. Those who might consider him in the future have been completely turned off by his complete self centered lack of awareness.

He came across as a self centered narcissistic smart ass.

Ted Cruz is a cunt...

and a tight assed prig.

What DBQ said!

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Newt Gingrich also nails it. This man is so articulate. He changed the beginning of his speech, on a dime, to be able to counter Ted Cruz's cunty actions and point out to the crowd what a dick Cruz is.

Smooth. On the cuff making these remarks and then smoothing moving into his ownspeech.

i'm also proud to be here as a Republican activist to the extra effort Donald Trump has invested in bringing the Republican Party together.

With no requirement for endorsement, he encourages competitors to speak once again. Governor Rick Perry, Governor Scott Walker, Dr. Ben Carson, Senator Marco Rubio, and Senator Ted Cruz have all responded to Donald Trump’s generosity.

(APPLAUSE)

Now I think you misunderstood one paragraph that Ted Cruz, who is a superb orator, said, and I just want to point it out to you, Ted Cruz said you can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution. In this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution.

So to paraphrase Ted Cruz, if you want to protect the Constitution of United States, the only possible candidate this fall is the Trump-Pence Republican ticket.

That way we have a Republican ticket to implement Republican principles in Washington.

Not only damage control, but shining the bright light of honesty onto Ted Cruz's selfish behavior.

Brilliant. I hope that Newt has a prominent position in a Trump administration.

edutcher said...

Newt will probably one of his senior advisors.

He can be his own worst enemy - knowing when to keep his mouth shut is not his best thing - so I don't look for an official post.

I could always be wrong.

ndspinelli said...

ed, I agree w/ your assessment. I think Trump knows you need to keep a Cocker Spaniel like Newt on a short leash. Cocker's are one of the worst biters. I've worked my share of dog bite cases and Cocker's can be nasty.

Chris Christy on Cruz's speech.

I really like Christy in many respects. Articulate, concise and a passionate speaker.
He nails Cruz.

Go Christy

John Boehner say, "I told you. Lucifer."

Ted, Ted, Ted, you could have had a Ronald Reagan moment and you decided to go all in as Eddie Haskell.

edutcher said...

Rabel, I keep coming back to your assessment of Cruz.

Anyone who goes to EBL's website will see this headline in his post about last night. Cruz Camp: Trump Campaign Approved Speech, Orchestrated RNC Blowback Against Cruz

The Cruz people spent several months pushing the idea what a jerk Donald Trump is.

Now they call him the Grand Master of 12 dimensional Virtual Ninja Chess.

Because, if Trump knew what was coming and decided to let him go with it, knowing what the reaction would be, he is going to bury the Ozark Mafia and they won't even know it happened until Christmas next year when Hillary asks Willie to stop playing with his little intern dolls and tell her when she has to light the White House Christmas tree.

ndspinelli said...

I've always liked Christy. A certain NYC guy here hates him. I chuckle w/ the pretzel twists he has to take w/ Christy playing a prominent role. He tries to demean Christy but exposes his own baggage in doing so. I have a friend in north Jersey who has been a neighbor of Christy since before he was anybody. Christy was @ my friend's daughters wedding last year. I've listened to a NYC guy spew venom for years about Christy. But, from my friend I know Christy to be an engaging, down to earth, loyal, friend. He's a politician, w/o question. But he's not phony, which is rare in his chosen profession.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

The Cruz camp wants to blame Trump for Cruz's speech???

Seriously?

I thought Ted was supposed to be the smartest guy in the room. Are they telling us that Cruz is too stupid to know that the speech he gave would be a bomb? That it would not be received at all well by the convention goers? Cruz is dumb enough to be fooled by Trump????

Unless Trump or Monafort put their hands up Cruz's ass and manipulated him like a Muppet, there is no one to blame for Cruz's self immolation except Cruz himself.

Trump is masterful. There was no downside to inviting Cruz to speak at the convention without a demand that he endorse Trump.

1) Trump looks generous and magnanimous. Trump wins.

2) Cruz sucks it up and endorses Trump or at least goes for the party unity let's get the bitch (Hillary) speech. Cruz looks like a graceful loser, the party is better off...... and Trump wins

3) Ted does what he just did and looks like a disloyal, oath breaking ass and alienates everyone except the most rabid Cruz supporters and ends his own political future. Trump wins.

In all scenarios, Trump comes out on top. The art of the deal....indeed.

Rabel said...

The Cruz diehards and the neverTrumpers and the Hillary supporters masquerading as Cruz diehards and neverTrumpers are out in force on the internet today trying to justify Cruz's ego trip last night. I don't think it will work but they sure are trying.

The fact that Trump allowed Cruz to speak openly with or without an endorsement -- speaks well of Trump.

The fact that some of Trump's throne sniffing supporters heads exploded in rage because Cruz didn't follow orders, obey, and he didn't grovel and kiss Trump's ring? - sad and pathetic.

btw- what's the big deal? "Vote your conscience" is pretty clear. Unless you have a chip on your shoulder.

I waffled on my primary vote between Cruz and Trump. I knew Cruz would abide to the Constitution and try to reduce govt but I just did not think he was electable because he has that weird zealot-like bible thumper vibe about him. So I decided to give my primary vote to
Trump. Cruz really disappointed me last night but I was not shocked.

ndspinelli said...

Christy in a good example, and there are many more, of a Republican governor in a solid blue state. I think one of the main reasons for this dynamic is people see on a more micro level the waste and fascism of Democrat governing. Voters need someone to tap into that on a macro level, w/ president. Although we have had Republican presidents since Reagan, he's the last one to tap into that. But, I will say again, Congress is what really needs to be sanitized. A grass roots movement to vote out ALL[that's Dem AND Rep] is what is really needed.

Rabel said...

Cruz had a chance to make a major contribution to the all-important task of keeping Hillary Clinton out of the oval office by encouraging his faction of the Republican party to support the nominee. He placed his petty personal interests ahead of the interests of the USA.

He is a dog.

I know you don't get politics, but party politics is a team sport. Once everybody gets his shot, you rally round the nominee and hope you have better luck next time.

Walker did it, Christie did it, Carson did it, Rubio did it. Are they all sad and pathetic, too?

Do you know Christie, who you loved as he tore apart Cacklepants, actually hugged her once? Does that make him another stealth Hillary thrall, too?

Everybody expected Cruz would support the team, but he's too busy laying out his next move - which may well be getting re-elected in '18 because I have a feeling TX is not going to kiss him after this. Control of the Senate may be up for grabs, so unity is a sensitive issue, but the One True Ted did what he does best and grandstanded, as always.

btw- what's the big deal? "Vote your conscience" is pretty clear. Unless you have a chip on your shoulder.

Depends. To a Cruzzer, it might mean staying home or not voting for President or doing something really stupid and voting Libertarian just to spite everybody.

And you really shouldn't start about chips on shoulders.

ndspinelli said...

I surmise Cruz has a plan to create a schism Republican faction that turns into a 3rd party.

ndspinelli said...

That would comport w/ his speech. He's not stupid.

edutcher said...

PS Wouldn't post this under other circumstances - they're going nuts over at Gateway - but a couple of points are raised.

First, RNC staffers booed him in the hall on his way to Sheldon Adleson's party - which I think is low class. He was also refused admittance to Adelson's suite, which could have big consequences in 2 years. He'll face a much tougher fight for re-election, especially if he takes the brunt of any losses this Fall.

As I say, it's a team sport at this point.

Second, one of the commenters brought up the pledge to support the nominee which Cruz signed.

He gave his word.

Amartel said...

Showing up and bagging on Clinton WAS the endorsement.
You know that.
But that's not good enough. Boooo!
Nice job, Trump Fans.
All you had to do was be gracious winners.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

First of all April..... no one expected or demanded Cruz to endorse Trump or kiss Trump's ring. If he did that Cruz would certainly be a hypocrite.

In yesterdays conversations I detailed what would be a good track for Cruz to take. To gracefully acknowledge that his candidacy didn't win and then to call for party unity to defeat Hillary. Cruz didn't need to endorse Trump. Just follow through with his pledge to support the party's candidate. He did make a vow. He broke it. This tells us much about his lack of character. Cruz didn't even attempt to support the candidate. Instead he made a call for people to NOT vote for Trump but to vote for himself instead.

Instead of putting the party first, against Hillary. He still is sucking on sour grapes.

"Vote your conscience" is pretty clear.

Yes. Yes it is! Crystal clear. Vote your conscience is the mantra of those who wanted to UNbind the delegates so they could vote for Cruz. It is the mantra of those never trump Republicans who wanted to subvert the convention rules and who LOST their bid to do so. It was their last gasp attempt at changing the rules so they could "vote their conscience" DESPITE what the voters voted for or what the rules that they agreed to dictates.

Cruz was saying. Vote for ME. Not the chosen candidate. Everyone on the convention floor knew what he was saying and THAT was when the booing began. Vote your Conscience is exactly the opposite of party unity. Exactly the opposite of opposing Hillary.

Cruz is a selfish ass.

Rubio's short but effective video was the epitome of a grown man accepting that he didn't win. Accepting it with grace and humor. Showing and saying that it was time to grow up and put the past behind us. He endorsed Trump as a candidate to win against the opposition. He also didn't kiss Trump's ring. He just got on the platform to win in November.

edutcher said...

ndspinelli said...

That would comport w/ his speech. He's not stupid.

I dunno about that. Right now, he doesn't have much in the way of support - and a lot of his originally came from Libertarians. What's he gonna do, create a Republitarian party?

I mean, if he tries that - and everybody freaked at the idea Trump might have tried it - how does he get money? Who is going to trust him on anything?

Just remember, there's all kinds of smart and all kinds of stupid in this world.

edutcher said...

oopsy, all he had to say was, "I recognize what's at stake and will support the ticket to defeat the Democrats". It would not have killed him.

Amartel said...

Showing up and bagging on Clinton WAS the endorsement.
You know that.
But that's not good enough.

You must be joking.

He barely laid a glove on her (and April complains about Trump not going after her). Rudy went after her. Christie went after. Cruz gave a couple of subdued criticisms on policy and then went on to give his manifesto.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Here is the pledge that the ALL signed. Remember that the reason for the pledge was the thought that it would be Donald Trump who would be the maverick losing wild card. The expectation was that one of the GOPe guys, most likely Bush, would be the ultimate candidate.

The reason for the pledge was to force Trump to shut up and be a good boy when he lost the primaries. Little did they know that it would come back and bite them all in the ass. LOL

"I (name) affirm that if I do not win the 2016 Republican nomination for president of the United States I will endorse the 2016 Republican presidential nominee regardless of who it is. I further pledge that I will not seek to run as an independent or write-in candidate nor will I seek or accept the nomination for president of any other party."

At least some of the runners up have some integrity. Cruz has none. Kasich and Jeb are also classless losers.

Trump saw the speech, knew what would happen, let Cruz go ahead, and destroy himself.

The butt hurt is on Cruz, dear. He shot himself right in the head.

In Ben Shapiro's words - "Cruz Camp: Trump Campaign Approved Speech, Orchestrated RNC Blowback Against Cruz".

Who's butt hurt?

On the pledge, And that pledge was not a blanket commitment.

He uses the attacks on his family as the justification. He does not mention Trump's going after Rubio, Carson, or Christie , or the New York values crack, or the delegate poaching.

I know this is kicking a guy when he's down - and I know I shouldn't, but I was struck by this piece when I first saw it 5 months ago - long before I'd soured on the guy.

It's 8 months old and seems awfully prescient

In fact, Cruz has failed in every cause he has championed—and it is never his fault. Failure to defund Planned Parenthood, failure to repeal Obamacare, failure to stop the Iran deal—and the list goes on. That is his Senate career. Of course, all conservatives want these battles to be fought, even if we lose. But it’s not really the issue or the cause that Cruz is championing. No, he just wants to be the one leading the cause—and wants you to see him doing it. Cruz is a perpetual martyr.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

Your hatred of Cruz plays right into the left's wheelhouse.

Brando at Althouse speaks truth to power.

"I think Trump wins by having Cruz speak, even knowing that there would be no endorsement. I think it shows his strength and his willingness to deal with people who do not fall in line behind him."

(reply)
"He could have, if he played it that way. By having his supporters boo the guy and lambaste him for the next 12 hours, it instead looked like they were impotent to stop him.

A smart operation would have simply cheered Cruz, and had Trump walk on stage to shake his hand at the end (and if Cruz refused, he would have looked terrible while Trump looked magnanimous) and treat "vote your conscience" like a Trump endorsement. Or hell, even say "I realize Ted's not on board with us yet, but I believe we will win him and his fans over yet". THAT would be a winning message. Instead, it looked like they were betrayed and unable to do anything about it, and just gave a prime time speaking engagement to a guy who stabbed them in the back."

...

No doubt.

"This. The thing about so many Republican activists is for about the last sixteen years there has been an intense loathing of Hillary Clinton. It’s a testament to how awful a candidate Donald Trump is that these same people aren’t ready to crawl across a football field of broken glass to help get him elected. Cruz just laid out a perfect case for why Republicans shouldn’t stay home (as too many did in 2012) and let Hillary Clinton get elected President (which means electing Donald Trump as the only other viable option) but because he didn’t kiss the Donald’s ring, they’re acting like he did something beyond the pale. You know, like calling someone’s wife ugly or accusing their father of trying to murder JFK."

edutcher said...

If you want to comment at TOP, nobody is stopping you, but why should I care what 2 guys over there say?

Fact is, the bulk of the opinion on the Internet is that Cruz destroyed himself last night (I was rather surprised at the vehemence and the unanimity of it). You disagree, swell, but all the nonsense and name calling doesn't change the fact that Cruz has really hurt himself not because he was expected to genuflect, but because, like everybody else, he was expected top be a team player. That's what being on a team means.

For Christ's sake, McConnell gets it, Ryan gets it, Rubio gets it, Carson gets it, Christie gets it. Everybody gets it but the One True Ted, who has to be special. As political parties are based on showing up with the rest of the crowd and presenting a united front, being the jerk who tries to spoil the party doesn't get you very far.

Witness Arlen Specter. Better yet, witness Kasich who also decided to be a jerk and stay away. Cruz will need money next year if he wants to go back to the Senate. He ain't getting it from most of the Republican Party donors.

He thinks he's a big wheel because he's gotten a few headlines and won a couple of hundred delegates. He's missing more than a few spokes off that wheel because he has no friends in the party now and few, if any, donors.

And I'm smart enough to know how all this works. You, sad to say, refuse to learn.
