"French media to stop publishing photos and names of terrorists"

The Guardian:   Several French news organisations have said they will no longer publish photographs of people responsible for terrorist killings, to avoid bestowing “posthumous glorification”.

Le Monde published an editorial after the latest attack, the murder of an elderly priest in a church near Rouen by two men claiming allegiance to Islamic State. Under the headline “Resisting the strategy of hate”, Le Monde argued on Wednesday that all elements of society had to be involved in the struggle against terrorism, and that media organisations had a special role to play.

“The sites and newspapers that produce this information cannot excuse themselves from self-examination on several fronts. Since Isis terrorism first appeared, Le Monde has changed its practices several times,” the newspaper said.

In the aftermath of the Nice attack, a psychoanalyst, Fethi Benslama, who teaches at Paris Diderot university, suggested on French radio: “Perhaps it is time that there was a pact in the media to no longer publish the names and pictures of the perpetrators of these acts, as it’s a really big boost to their efforts to make themselves world famous, even while their victims are anonymous and will remain anonymous.”

Benslama said this “glorification” encouraged others to carry out attacks, “to gain glory in the eyes of their commanders and their friends”. He added: “They leave their identity cards – they want to be identified very quickly.”

Fethi Benslama is a muslim. Say no more.

No, he's right.

These cutthroats want the notoriety. Think of the mass murderers in this country.

Just because he's a Moslem (and taking a big risk) doesn't mean he's lying and doesn't mean he's wrong.

Of course. Anonymize victims and the perpetrators so that history can be white washed into anonymity. If you don't name who did what to whom, then you in effect are declaring that nothing has happened and to simply move along. Then to which I say, what is the point of journalism and news at that point? It would be rendered meaningless and irrelevant. You might as well say that something has happened somewhere to someone and that's it.

So, if I get this straight, the brightest bulbs in France propose to "disappear" real live Muslims who kill by removing their images from French media. Why don't the Frogs go all the way and just make like ostriches?

He is a muslim, he is lying and he is wrong. The enemy of civilization must be named. He is working for them.

Muslims are terrorists whether or not the "press" names them. The only ones served by not identifying the perps are the sleeper cells.

France is lost, we are headed that way - read news reports over here. If a "man" is being sought for a crime, the meaningful adjectives are omitted.

If a "Raleigh man" is sought, he is in actuality, from Guadalajara.

It would be nice if we saw English versions of the other articles, but where does he say he doesn't wants to name the ultimate enemy - Islam?

Cause I don't see it.

What he does say is the same thing we've heard in this country, that giving the cutthroats who carry out these acts fame by making public their names and printing their pictures, only encourages more of the same.

Something I do believe has been said in this self-same bandwidth once or twice.

And I'm talking about creeps like Jared Lochner, who seem to revel in the attention.

Call a Mo a Mo, those are words to live by.

Of course we're already there with the already current--indeed existing for quite some time--media PC practice of omitting the names and photos of black thugs/criminals, aren't we? So inclusion of Moslems is just par for the course. And ricpic is wrong to limit himself to the Frogs. ALL of Western Civilization seems to be now operating on The Ostrich Plan.

While I agree that we need not glorify these killers; you can name them and show their pictures, and call them pig eating jackholes whose families should be made penniless beggers.

Should we get rid of the FBI most wanted because it has names and pictures?
