Nocturne

Now for a nice tune, featuring my cousin on piano. He grew up in the house pictured in my previous post. He was a gifted musician, a decent and funny man, and he left us way too soon. He and his brother worked in the music business for decades and recorded many famous artists such as:

Enjoy.

What a wonderful singer to play with. I hate to admit that I don't remember hearing of her. Judging by her and that song your cousins knew what they were doing.

She, and a number of other Malaco recording artists, tended to have regional hits. My cousins were very good at their business. Cousin Carson played on so many records I can't even begin to list them, but among records you may have heard of there was There Goes Rhymin' Simon by Paul Simon. My brother got to talk with both of those cousins and hear their story first hand - he was impressed by the number of gold records lining the walls of the studio.

Last night, dead tired after bad sleep and travel, I dragged my sorry ass to see KD Lang in Denver. her opening act was the Grigoryan Brothers. Really great.

They sound good, DB@H - and I would have never guessed that they are Australian.

I've got a neighbor who was a professional musician. I forget what hit he and his band had, but he made a decent living playing piano. He and I played in our church's band. I played synth and he played piano. He refused to play any keyboard other than a piano. Anyhow, I stood behind him at the synth. One day around Christmastime we were in the middle of the service and I started watching him play and just stopped playing myself, I was so entranced with what he was doing. Not that what he was doing was technically impressive, but what he was doing was so tasteful, so right. Anything I could have added would only have diminished the moment.

Great musicians are magical.

That is very insightful, windbag, and seems right. The same words have been used with regards to musicians from Mozart all the way up to Count Basie. That is a level of musicianship I never achieved. Reminds me of a quip "He makes the piano talk - it says 'Keep your hands off me!'" Yeah, I was that guy.
