As you know, Trump made a gigantic BFD about this case while campaigning. Naturally his supporters nationwide are furious about this local case. And as you know this bears heavily on sanctuary cities and the whole attitude toward illegal immigration and even the language about immigration.
Apparently jurors were not allowed to hear about his previous conviction, nor about his previous deportations. Given all that publicity, where and how they find enough jurors sufficiently ignorant about his case is another of those weird mysteries.
I'm imagining his defense describing a Barney Fife moment on the pier. "I saw this thing that looked like a big fat ugly gun so I carefully picked it up with two fingers and while it dangled in the air BANG it fired by itself."
