Reminds me of the difference in words of French and Anglo-Saxon that made it into the English language. Swine-pork, stairs-steps, etc.
I wonder if retaliation-revenge follows this? I don't know, revenge looks pretty French. Hmmm, looking at a list of synonyms they look mostly French to me. I guess recrimination looks the most A-S to me.
