A comic book mirror of our world?

The trailer for the next Marvel film is out. It is Captain America-Civil War. It is a war among the Superheros with Captain America and most of the Avengers on one side and Iron Man on the other. If you are familiar with the comic series you will know what it is about.

One interesting aspect is that several characters in the Marvel Universe are making their first appearance in this third entry in the Captain America cycle. Spiderman for one. He was the property of another studio and now the rights have reverted to Marvel. Also the Black Panther and Ant Man make an appearance.

I wonder how far they will take the metaphor. It looks interesting.

I can't wait for this. When it first came out in the comics it was a pretty big deal back in 2006-2007. Just a quick synopsis for those that don't know and are interested. Back in the Iron Man comics, and this is a long while ago, Iron Man/Tony Stark was time traveled to the time of King Arthur and Morgan Le Fay, and during that transition he caught a glimpse of the future and it was that super powered people would cause great havoc and inadvertently kill a great deal of people, specifically in the comics it was an event at a school in Stamford where the group of young super heroes calling themselves The New Warriors who were chasing down a mutant called Nitro and they were filming it like a reality show and posting it on the web. His ability was that he could create explosions of any size, but in this case, he actually internalized his explosive power and took out an entire school and killed a bunch of children and teachers.

This prompted a move by congress and the president to start to regulate people with superpowers by having them register with the state, become licensed, insured, bonded and trackable. Tony Stark and a bunch of other superheroes sides with this in the wake of what Nitro did in the Stamford attack which was labelled a terrorist act and the surviving members of the New Warriors were tried and convicted of terrorism and sent to prison (this also became an offshoot storyline). Captain America/Steve Rogers disagreed with Tony Stark on registration and he had other superhero's side with him and they had to operate underground. They became fugitives and the relationship between Captain America Iron Man dissolved. They still kept in contact, but it very very strained. Tony Stark tried to explain to Roger of what he saw in the future, but it didn't matter to Cap only because he believed that superhero/powered registration was akin to tyranny.

There is way way more, but I don't want to spoil it for fear of what will be in the movie. I suppose you can read it elsewhere and get the whole gist, but it created a lot of fantastic spin off stories and the came one after the other and had a really big long run up into even now in the Marvel Universe.

Well, I looked at the trailer and damned me for a fool, but this is a different style and story for Civil War, so forget everything I said earlier. Still a civil war between heroes, but with a different antagonist.
