Blood orange

Some of the blood oranges have one or two seeds.

The seed that you see is the hard outer shell for the real seed. The outer shell is expected to deteriorate underground and allow water inside it. You can speed germination by using an X-acto knife to nick then peel off the outer shell and then plant the small seed.

These are lemon seeds. If I'm remembering correctly, these brown inner seeds have an even smaller white seed inside them. So, after nicking and peeling these brown ones out of their larger white shells, then likewise they can be nicked and peeled too, in order to speed germination considerably.

The blood orange seeds are white inside. They germinated inside of one week. That surprised me how fast it was. They were only 2-part seeds, not 3-part seeds like the lemons.

Shortly after this photo was taken the stupid things died.

I have no idea what went wrong.

But that goes to show you the heartbreak that is in store for you should you endeavor to grow them.

A few years ago someone posted a recipe for key lime pie that got a lot of raves. Never cared for key lime but saw a recipe for Sour orange pie on a Florida website. They use Calamondins which are available primarily in Florida. The trees look like ornamental plants, the fruits are small. They say you can leave them outdoors in the summer an bring them indoors in the colder months. There supposed to be as sour as key limes.

Is that a herd of Chia Pets standing around? Maybe they had something to do with the plants demise.
