I just finished up with Sharyl Attkison's book (audio) on the art of the smear. And when I say finished up, I mean bagged on it about halfway through. Far more tedious than it needed to be. Lots of filler. Okay, Okay, David Brock is evil, I get it.
She's got a pretty good speaking voice, though. Were it not for that I'd probably have bagged on it sooner.
Now I'm working on getting through "The Death of Expertise." I thought maybe it'd work well in tandem with the smeary thing. But so far the guy just comes off like a tool. People are ignorant and arrogant. Okay, okay, I get it.
I'll keep listening, though. Maybe the guy will eventually get around to explaining how nefarious forces exploit our inherent cognitive tendencies and need for sociality to further their own evil agenda.
These NYT best-seller type books all seem to follow the same formula. They're written for length. Lots of filler. Say the same thing 5 times before moving on to say the next thing 5 times and then circle back to say both of those things together 5 more times. SHEESH!!! What a bore!
But I feel like I have to suffer through at least some of it. Kind of like "assigned reading."
"The context for this clip is Pelosi’s half-hour House Minority Leader Weekly Briefing of June 22, 2017. During the briefing, Pelosi states that Republicans use fake news tactics like “the wrap-up smear” against Democrats like herself because they know they can’t win on law or policy. Start at 25:57:
“Because basically at the end of the day that’s what people are interested in, their representative and what their representative is going to do for their district. Republicans are afraid of that contrast in a race. Because they’re going to go there to be involved in trickle-down economics, shutting down hospitals and rest of it. So they don’t want them to see that contrast so they focus on something else. [At this point, Pelosi launches into the part about smear tactics. — DB] “And it’s a diversionary tactic. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. You demonize — we call it the wrap-up smear. You want to talk about politics. It’s a wrap-up smear. You smear somebody with falsehoods and then you merchandise it and then you write it and say, see, it’s reported in the press that this, this and this so they have that validation that the press reported the smear and then it’s called a wrap-up smear. Now Iam going to merchandise the press’ report on the smear that we made. It’s a tactic. It’s self-evident, but I think I’m worth the trouble, quite frankly."
@deb: I too wondered about the date stamp of this snippet. But it really doesn’t matter that she was talking about Republicans in the past. She knows the game. She plays hardbalmer.
She does indeed explain her party's reindeer games, revealed in fullness and more clearly exposed this time around than any time prior to the Kavenaugh Cave Initiative.
I can't recall if I used the term "reindeer games" in a comment here recently or thought about using it. Either way it's a fit in this context.
And it works to describe in the overall the shunning game, silly woman shtick, and male focused yoo-hoo wooing that takes place here in the name of Levity and functions as an energizing force to invite and provoke comments.

Agreed, slugger, playbook the same.
chick nails it, and her. Hey chick, playing Russian no more? Or are you a different chick than the regular chick?
Democrats ALWAYS tell you what THEY'RE doing by describing others.
Because it's the thing that they know. They speak from their own world, their world view.
For example, she insisted the ultimate ground up grass roots movement, the Tea Party, is astroturfed. Because that's all that she knows.
She called them racist. Because THAT's what she knows.
@ricpic: Let me just say that I came home to roost.
