Amazon warehouse employees rejoice

Amazon increased its minimum wage to $15.00 per hour.

Say they work eight hours a day, that's what, 80 + 40 = $120.00 a day X 5 days a week = $600.00 a week. 120 x 30 days = 3600 a month x 12 = 43,200 a year.

That's a lot of physical work, I bet.

And I bet they work a lot more than 8 hours a day 5 days a week, but I'm guessing.

MATHS!

I'm glad they're getting more money but the video rubs me the wrong way. What are they? Adults or little kids on Christmas morning putting on a happy display for beaming parents?

Guess I'm a bit of a stuffed shirt.

If they have 3 shifts at the warehouse, then they only get paid for 7-1/2 hours a day (non paid lunch hour).

Your math is off. For a 40 hour work week at 52 weeks per year (not the wrong assumption of 30 days per month) the gross pay for $15 per hour is: 15 * 40 * 52= $31,200

That's roughly half the median family income.

The thing that astounds me is that the median household income in the US of A is a little over 60K a year. That's a lot of dough. At least to me it is. Oops, I see Seppo just made that point. It's a shock to the system that I'm looking up to all those folks.

"That's roughly half the median family income."

So two unskilled workers would be earning the household median.

In other retail news Sears stock dropped below a dollar this week (currently 77 cents) NYSE talking about delisting it.

How many of Amazon's employees and others are subsidized by welfare? If working people need government assistance they're not paid enough.

Or maybe government assistance levels are too high.

Yeah, after the FAKE NEWS that WalMart's employees were subsidized by Uncle Sugar, I read that their employee welfare rates were the same as every other retailer in the country. I imagine the Amazon sweat shops welfare recipient rate is the same the other warehouse sweat shops.

The first effect will be gentrifying the jobs. A higher class of worker will displace the existing ones.
