NYPD Troop

While looking for some old tv series to watch while I am in the house I scrolled through the available shows and thought "Hmm, NYPD Blue - that was moderately interesting back in the day". It still is. But what is more interesting to me now is recognizing the actors and actresses who show up. Plenty of Sopranos mopes - Christofuh, Little Carmine, Ralphie Cifaretto AKA Vinnie Greco, many generic actors from shows old and new, and just now a serious doctor came running into the scene and it was none other than a very young Titus Welliver.

I think I must be watching too much television if I start noticing things like when and where actors get jobs.

The funny thing is I keep watching NYPD Blue due to the character Sipowicz - he reminds me of a more competent version of my late ex-father-in-law combined with an obnoxious brother I used to have. Dennis Franz retired to Idaho and left acting behind. He keeps himself warm way up north there burning the stack of money he earned on this one series. Good for him.

Is it still raining cats and dogs there?

We have had several days in recent weeks where we had no rain whatsoever but most days the temperature goes up to around 90 and we get pop-up thunderstorms in the evening. We are having one right now. Some nights the temperature drops to around 70 and it is quite pleasant. Ah, August.

There are lightning bugs out there dodging the lightning. And even though I sometimes find my strength flagging due to the heat and humidity I still love summer.

Is Sixty transmogrifying into Troop? More important, is transmogrifying the right word?

I can't remember how many episodes of NYPD Blue I watched waiting for the sex scene....which either never came or lasted 10 seconds. I know, pathetic.

Okay, transmogrify is like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, so I guess it's not the right word.

I think NYPD Blue introduced the jerky, handheld camera, at least as far as gritty television drama. Some of the best opening music ever.

Sipowicz crept into my heart, for sure. No one could look uncomfortable like him.

Transmutation might be a fit, though I'd go with A over B

-the conversion or transformation of one species into another.
-the supposed alchemical process of changing base metals into gold

You couldn't have a Sipowicz character in today's culture. Nice to know Franz is living the good life and got out of Hollywood w/ his soul in tact.

Doesn't Franz live in Coeur d'Alene? Very nice but not so insular and elitist as Sun Valley.

Speaking of Coeur d'Alene, one of my favorite movies is Smoke Signals, a spirit-quest road-trip movie.

rent on amazon prime for 2.99

Also can rent on youtube.

Another Bosch actor showed up - but this one cracked me up - Tuco from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul just showed up as a bleached blond Puerto Rican gang banger - the hits just keep on coming.

Tuco played a gang banger in Training Day and Raoul Castro in a bad movie about the Cleveland sexual slave owner. He's got bad boy down pat.

Training Day was okay.

There is a lot of stuff that is on NYPD Blue that would not fly today.

Although contemporary shows like Chicago PD and Shades of Blue have crooked cops. But very few racist ones.

Dennis Franz always seemed to tone it down in the show. He wasn't a full blown racist he just gave off an odor of racism.

If you want to see a real true depiction of cops in the 1970's check out "Life on Mars" the US edition. It is about this guy who back in time to be a cop in the 1970's with Harvey Keitel and Chistopher of the Soparanos playing cops. Christopher in particular is on the money.

Franz was good at the slow burn - he was always on simmer and would sometimes boil over.

I forgot to mention that Ross from Friends played a Bernard Goetz type character in the first season. Of course, even then PC crap had infiltrated the studios so anyone who dared to defend himself using force had to be killed. Bye bye, 4B.

You just reminded me of Barney Miller, Sixty. The episode where they removed a guy from his apartment for some reason, who thought he couldn't go outside because the air was bad, and he died, and Wojo was upset.
