If reports are true...

… that Aretha is in grave condition then it is indeed a sad day for me. Here is one of my favorites from her vast oeuvre, recorded in 1972 and it still gives me chills.

Years ago, possibly at the 1996 convention, the local news ran a clip of Aretha Franklin performing. The sportscaster referred to her as the Dairy Queen of Soul. The woman anchor shot him the look of death, the man anchor was clueless.

If you recall, in years past I have posted and written about Mahalia Jackson. Aretha was a student of hers and at least in terms of her gospel albums, Aretha was Mahalia's musical heir. We are coming to the end of an era that began over a century ago. As the boys in country music sing "Who is going to fill their shoes?"
