What's that thing where you dress in medieval garb and play at juggling or jousting? Something role playing. Oh, yeah, LARP. That would be fun :)

And there I was, thinking he was skilled with his hands. Nice looking hands at that.

The other "cartoon" leaves me wondering where the prompt to draw that idea originated, as it has little to do with cats, dogs or bathing. A play on words cartoon? Or is it about the cat's disinterest in the bubbles while washing itself?

The Dude said...

I like that cartoon - that's precisely the kind of bath cats prefer.

As for the spring pole lathe, my close personal friend Roy Underhill built one on his show The Woodwright's shop one season, and the next season he jumped ahead a few centuries and built a treadle powered lathe. My initial design was a treadle lathe but then I realized I would be standing on one leg all day and exercising the other - based on what I wanted to do I opted for an electric motor on mine.

My thought was "If Roy Underhill can build a lathe, so can I - he's not so smart". Turns out he is pretty smart, but I went ahead and built my lathe anyway. It is slightly less primitive than the one in that video, but I had to solve the same problems - how to hold the stock between centers, how to make the dead center moveable along the bed rails, how to brace the tool, and how to make the work spin around.

The tool the fellow with his homespun shirt is using is known as a "hook". It differs from the tools I use in that the cutting edge is curved and held at a downward angle relative to the axis of the spinning work. I read extensively about the history of English wood turning and that was the tool of choice for something like 500 years in my home isles. I opted to get about as modern as I could - no need to forgo modern metallurgy or electricity and I even welded some parts to hold my tool rest. Welding FTW!

The best of both worlds.

The cartoon is about the dog's love for the cat and the cat's love of herself.

deborah said...

Quit baiting me, ric, it doesn't work and you're not very good at it ;)

Nice, MM. Mysterious, even.

SG, I think electric was a good choice.

I don't get the cartoon, ricpic may be closest.

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the cupboard,
To give the poor dog a bone;
But when she came there
The cupboard was bare,
And so the poor dog had none.

She went to the baker's
To buy him some bread;
When she came back
The dog was dead!

She went to the undertaker's
To buy him a coffin;
When she came back
The dog was laughing.

She took a clean dish
to get him some tripe;
When she came back
He was smoking his pipe.

She went to the alehouse
To get him some beer;
When she came back
The dog sat in a chair.

She went to the tavern
For white wine and red;
When she came back
The dog stood on his head.

She went to the fruiterer's
To buy him some fruit;
When she came back
He was playing the flute.

She went to the tailor's
To buy him a coat;
When she came back
He was riding a goat.

She went to the hatter's
To buy him a hat;
When she came back
He was feeding her cat.

She went to the barber's
To buy him a wig
When she came back
He was dancing a jig.

She went to the cobbler's
To buy him some shoes;
When she came back
He was reading the news.

She went to the sempstress
To buy him some linen;
When she came back
The dog was spinning.

She went to the hosier's
To buy him some hose;
When she came back
He was dressed in his clothes.

The Dame made a curtsy,
The dog made a bow;
The Dame said, Your servant;
The dog said, Bow-wow.

This wonderful dog
Was Dame Hubbard's delight,
He could read, he could dance,
He could sing, he could write;
She gave him rich dainties
Whenever he fed,
And erected this monument
When he was dead.

MamaM said...

Yeah but did he blow bubbles??

The Dude said...

Healthy cats engage in grooming behavior. An anthropomorphized dog might be thoughtful enough to provide additional ambiance and do some word play on the human concept of a bubble bath. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

lol Windbag. Is that something that was around when you were a kid? It never made it to my neck of the woods, I don't think.

Sixty...snow falling on pines...the haiku is strong with you.

Mooxie - the special princess who is a Turkish Angora (rescue) she likes when I turn on the bath faucet to a gentle flow and she sticks her paw under the flow of the water and makes a paw-waterfall-cup for slurping.

Such odd creatures. I love em so.

deborah, actually my wife taught that to me, I think when we were still teens.

deborah said...

Sweet how they have their individual cute traits. One of mine likes to climb up on the furnace conduits in the basement ceiling. She's one of those cats that purrs a lot, and loudly.

April, do you have an opinion at which number of cats one becomes a crazy cat lady?

The Dude said...

I can answer that - the number is two. Two shall the counting be, neither one, nor three. Four is right out.

The Dude said...

That is to say, two is okay, three is the red zone. There have been times I have had as many as four cats at once, but I am not a lady, so we were cool.

I was talking to a woman the other day and she said she has cats and koi. I asked how many cats she had and she misunderstood and said 12. That's how many fish she has, but I thought that's how many cats she has and then I thought that she was well into the toxoplasmosis zone and related dementia which is known in the vernacular as "Crazy Cat Lady Syndrome".

Being hard of hearing sure does lead to some whacky conversations, just sayin'.

deborah said...

lol the Holy Cat Grenade.

Glad you amended your first answer! When I had one, I said three. Now I have two, three is the absolute cut off. I swear.

deborah said...

Thanks, windbag. Childhood sweethearts who marry are fairly rare, I think!

Deborah - The number of cats that = crazy cat lady territory varies. Don't you think? Depends on how large your house is, how you interact with them, and others comparatively... Do you exclude humans for cats? Is your life balanced? Or have the cats taken over?

My neighbors have no yard and three giant German Shepherds. They are crazy dog people. I'm fine with it because they do a really good job caring for the animals. Lots of one-at-a-time walks. They are constantly walking those dogs.

I have 3 of my own and I care for 2 more cats on top of that. 2 of my current round of inhabitants are from the streets. One is feral. It's what happens when you rescue scrappy losers from the streets. Some of them end up at my house. *I'm looking at you Parking Lot Pete*

My cousin and her husband rescued a family of cats, added that family of rescued cats to their own, and now they have 11 cats. They live on 3 acres and make it work. Are they crazy?
Probably - but they love it and are super happy with it because they love their animals.

deborah said...

I withdraw the question, your honor ;)

LOL - how many = crazy. More than 3.

I'm crazy.

See. Nobody ever calls a guy a crazy cat dude.

deborah said...

FTR I implied Sixty was a crazy cat lady once, but that's behind me now, I'm a reformed woman. And I was at one time a crazy dog lady, quite mad indeed. Well, nine or ten, tops. But it's really not good for the dogs. Not enough attention to go around :(

The Dude said...

I have two dogs and two cats. One dog is 16 years old, one cat is 18. He outlived, outlasted and out played all of the other cats who have come and gone over the years. I snagged a momma cat from horrible circumstances two years ago and she is okay now, but she will never be at ease around humans. Given her early years I am okay with that. At least she is safe, well fed and inside now.

I like the idea of two dogs at a time as they are pack animals. My youngest dog keeps my old dog on his toes - just today, for instance, they were kind of playing outside, and it was good to see the old guy still attempting to do some playful moves.

The problem with all pets is that you get attached to them and then they move on.

We have two cats. We had three up until about two months ago, but he disappeared. He was insane. He meowed maybe five times that I ever heard. Beautiful cat. Gray with a white bib and four perfect white boots. He killed a crow one morning. Unbelievable. He wouldn't come inside until this past winter. It would be sub-zero and he would sniff the air when I held the door open for him, then walk away.

Met a woman this week whose cat is 27 years old.

To round out a fun thread, the artist who drew the cartoon posted is Liz Climo.

https://thelittleworldofliz.com/

Elizabeth Climo, or simply Liz Climo, is a talented young animator currently working with the everlasting The Simpsons TV-show. When her day job ends, however, she still has enough time, creative energy and inspiration to create adorable and witty comics that present various animals in amusing everyday interactions.

After finishing her work as a storyboard revisionist for The Simpsons, she returns to her nocturnal passion of drawing cute animals engaged in delightful dialogues. She has created a Tumblr dedicated specifically to these animal comics. The absurdity and humor that Liz meets in everyday interactions find their way into the simple and elegant illustrations that she shares with her fans.

The popularity of the animal comics came as a pleasant surprise to the artist. Her fan base grows bigger and bigger with every new piece, which was the greatest motivation for the artist. “I am pretty surprised by the response I have gotten on Tumblr so far, but am extremely thankful and appreciative,“ said the animator in an interview with Daily Dot. “These comics are dedicated to everyone. Hopefully they make you smile, because smiling is fun.”

Turns out the beeping from my "adorbs" detector was sync with the descriptor that popped up several times in blurbs about the artist. Although I'm more a fan of the humor of Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes, I found a few of hers that made me smile.

With this for Windbag from a different online collection:
