Bush II press secretary's advice to Trump

1. Stop fighting with everyone and don’t be so nasty.  When you tweet unflattering pictures of Senator Cruz’s wife and threaten to “spill the beans” about her, question Ben Carson’s faith, offer to pay the legal bills of those who engage in violence, fault POWs, or accuse President Bush of being a liar, you push away voters you need to get to 50 percent.
2. Get your facts right.  Think about how much stronger you would be if you supported your statements with accurate facts or anecdotes.  If you had said “a small group” of Muslims cheered from rooftops in New Jersey on September 11th, no one could have faulted you.  Same thing when you say we “send nothing” to Japan, or when you misstate the trade deficit with China. You often fudge up your poll numbers too.  You regularly show that facts are malleable to you, and that raises doubts about your substantive knowledge on all sorts of matters.
3. Learn more policy.  Your comments about abortion were a double-edged disaster.  You alienated everyone.  They showed you are not familiar with the background of an important emotional issue.  Anyone aware of Right to Life’s thinking knows, mothers are not criminals.  You need to take the time to learn a variety of issues. You might think everyone in Washington is stupid, but there are a lot of smart people in that town who actually care about issues and you should find the ones you trust and listen to them. No one expects you to memorize arcane policy points.  But it will be harder for you to reach 50 percent if voters think you can’t demonstrate sufficient knowledge to sit in the Oval Office.
4. Make policy announcements.  You’re an outsider with business experience and people want to hear what you would do if elected, beyond building a wall.  On energy policy, corporate welfare, agriculture policy and dozens of other matters, you would surprise people and grow your support if you gave a small number of actual policy addresses.  The point will be less what you say about each specific matter (so long as you demonstrate some level of fluency and expertise) and more that you’re capable of doing it.  Some one-third of the Party supports you because they think you’re tough.  You would make inroads with other voters if they thought you were thoughtful.
5. Stop citing polls.  Politicians who talk about polls do so to show the election is all about them.  But elections are not about politicians.  Elections are about the hopes and dreams of the voters and especially now, voters want someone who can lift up our country, defend us, and grow the economy.  I get that you talk about the polls to show you’re a winner.  But if and when you start losing more contests, the polls will define you as a loser. What will you talk about then?  It’s better to knock it off now.  And of course, all the recent polls show you are losing to Hillary.
You got yourself to where you are today by demonstrating an uncanny, powerful, outsider’s bravado.  But the gap between 40 percent and 50 percent support is immense.  The higher hanging fruit is tough to get, and you won’t likely earn that support if you stay on your current path.
The Super Tuesday news conference you held at Mar-A-Lago and your policy speech (on a TelePrompter) to AIPAC were your two best moments demonstrating there is more to you than bravado.

My derision for Trump is well established. My derision for people like Ari Fleischer and his ilk is just about the same.

edutcher said...

Fleischer wasn't much use when the Lefties started attacking Dubya over Iraq and "torture".

He also sounds like one of the consultants who managed Jeb!

One of the things people like about Trump is the fact he doesn't just stand there and take it with a stupid smile on his face. He fights back.

Some of the stuff Fleischer says about getting control of the debate do make sense. Be specific about what's wrong with the One True Ted, don't just sound angry. (the Washington Times described his characterization of Cruz as a "Trojan horse" as "whining", but it was one of his better hits on the guy because it's true and succinct).

With that in mind, interesting piece from Last Refuge on how all those PAC to PAC money transfers in which the Cruz campaign has participated may violate FEC rules.

Looks like a few more holes in the Anointed One's halo.

No, He'll win because he fights. Hillary is a lousy candidate who can't even beat Bernie.

April would rather the One True Ted because he's the sellout, but he couches it in a veneer of civility.

edutcher said...

Well, we have an interesting dichotomy here.

When a couple of protesters heckled the One True Ted yesterday, he made a speech about standing with the cops, but, a month ago, when Dr Evil's minions suppressed Trump's right of free speech, Daddy Cruz stood with the creeps.

Lessee now, who was it got the Border Patrol's endorsement?

All good advice as long as he doesn't go so far as to homogenize himself and become just another cookie cutter candidate. One that is bland and prepackaged by handlers.

Part of the attraction to Trump is that he is NOT just another processed politician.

. Politicians who talk about polls do so to show the election is all about them. But elections are not about politicians. Elections are about the hopes and dreams of the voters and especially now, voters want someone who can lift up our country, defend us, and grow the economy.

This. The polls are nice. But people want to hear what are you going to do for US.

Hillary Clinton is not nice. She is not going to act nice. This is going to be a dirty campaign.

Ted Cruz isn't nice. He has been a dirty campaigner from the beginning. The crap he pulled on Ben Carson is just the tip of the ice berg. You are not going to win over the ultra conservatives by kissing Ted's ass. You can win over some conservatives by pushing big issues that are important to us like immigration and trade.

I doubt there are two more conservative voices here than Sixty Grit, edutcher and me. I think that we support Trump. There are plenty of grass roots conservatives who will support him if he goes at our issues in a plain unvarnished direct populist way. We lose squishes like bags and April. But we will pick up plenty of disaffected working class Democrats who hate Hillary. An election is the building of a coalition. This election is not really going to be left vs. right. It is upper class vs. lower class. It is a class election not a ideology election.

Much of that sounds like the stuff fed to Jeb!

Now maybe it's a guy thing (Troop will be along to 'splain this so much better), but somebody tries to inject your wife's career into the debate, few guys are going to respect you if you don't answer it (Trump did and Melania's picture only shows up here). I'd also remind everyone Reagan had a similar gender gap (spare me the romanticizing, April) because he took a hard line with the Commies and the crazies. Maybe Trump's the last guy candidate, I don't know.

I can go along with being more specific when you attack somebody and nail them for what they are. If I were advising Trump, I'd make that McConnell check a YUGE issue, one the Cruzzers can't ignore.

Like it or not, Trump is the focus of a big media blitz the way Reagan was. Fleischer advocates, for the most part, what Rove advised Dubya when the media went after him. It didn't work. Trump could fight a bit smarter, I'm the first one to say it, but, if he stops fighting and turns into Jeb!, he's done.

As I say, maybe it's a guy thing.

Trooper York said...

Some of Trumps positions resonate even with much more liberal people. Ritmo has said that Trumps positions on the endless wars in the Middle East resonates with him. Not a conventional position for a Republican. But I remember Pat Buchanan talking about the fact that young Americans like Patrick Murphy and Leroy Brown were going to die to protect the House of Saud.

That speaks to a lot of people across ideological lines.

Just as the Paddy's said about the civil war. It is a rich man's war and a poor man's fight.

Trooper at one twenty: I think it's obvious Trump needs to bring his A game now. Fleischer's right, he need to close that ten point gap. He's in no way saying be a Mitt, he's saying dial it down, straigten up, and fly right.

Methadras said...

All of you need to go back and look at the debate when hillary was running for the senate seat in New York against Rick Lazio and that now infamous point in the debate when Lazio left his lectern and approached her personage and invaded her 'personal space' (as if there is such a thing) and everyone became indignant and it cost Lazio the Senate seat even though Lazio won most of the state, he still got nailed when he lost to her 57 to 43, but she used that invasion of personal space as a sexist, misogynist clarion call and rode it all the way to the senate and now she's going to Lazio anyone who is the Republican Nominee. She's already doing it and her lapdog media is helping her.

Trump doesn't help himself in that regard. The attacks on various women, whether justified or not, won't ingratiate a favorable point of argument. He needs to study Clinton and attack her on policy and decision making points. Her lack of any accomplishments while in any position in office she's held. That's where he will make traction or anyone else for that matter. She'll try to swing it as an attack on herself and her gender, but a smart man will basically put a stop to that without being called a sexist for trying to stop her from doing it. Let her say her piece then destroy her character and her career. It's not that hard to do. I'm doing it in my head right now and typing it out to all of you. I can do it in an entire post that I'd happily send to any campaign. It's just not that hard to destroy her, but candidates will trip over their own dicks to fuck it up.

Both Cruz and Trump should be attacking Hillary now, constantly and consistently. Put the focus back on her lack of skill, achievement, or personal character. Start now instead of making bravado statements of how you will do it. JUST DO IT.

WWIII Joe Biden, Husk-Puppet + America's Putin said...

Of course he is saying be a Mitt. Or be a W. Or be a Walker. You know. Usual Republican consultant bullshit.

To your own self be true.

Win women on the issues. If not not. He can win the same percentage of women as Mitt and get a whole lot more men that hate Hillary. If Trump plays it right then only men she will get are gays, pajama boys and betas like Lawnboy.

You don't get a womans vote by acting like a woman.

Amartel said...

Great advice. Also, kinda obvious. (Stop being nasty, learn some policy, get your facts right.) How this has not occurred to Trump previously is ... rather mysterious. There really is so much natural talent there as a pitchman. People like the guy. I like the guy. He and Sanders are the relateable candidates. Which is weird since they're both, in their own individual ways, such Martians. Well, Trump is from Mars, Sanders is from Uranus. (Cheap shot, AM. Hurtful and uncalled for.) I doubt Trump will change. That personality, the good and the bad, is permanently imprinted. Same with Sanders.

Give me a break. Becoming conversant on issues is not being womanish. The punishing-women-for-abortion thing was an unforced error, regardless of whether you think she should be or not, it was not politic. He needs a list of issues to become conversant on. Unless he learns from his mistakes, he'll just be Palin on steroids.

Seriously debbie. Women don't care about the issues. They care about feelings.

Ari's first piece of advice. Be nice.

Amartel said...

Stop being nasty, learn some policy, get your facts right is phony? Nah. Basic civility and knowledge about the job for which you are applying is not asking for a personality change. It may be asking too much in Trump's case. He's gotten a lot of mileage out of the personality he has so I don't think he's going to go changin'. Too bad.

deborah said...

I see.

edutcher said...

I seem to recall Hillary said something on abortion that got her in trouble. Bernie didn't want to hear about her emails.

Anybody who speaks in public can be taken down by somebody for "offending" them. And Trump probably is more conversant on issues than most of us, but he understands your average working stiff is not interested in a position paper. That the media went into a tizzy has more to say about how scared they are of him.

Which is one of the good things to be said about him.

BTW most Lefties make dumb statements all the time. The media just covers for them.

Calling them like he sees them has gained him loyalty from a lot of people. He doesn't come across like a Cruz.

deborah said...

Trump needs 50% of the remaining delegates to get the nod.

Daddy Cruz needs 80%. If we don't hear the full story of Amanda and Sarah and Katrina and the DC escorts and the Dallas escorts first.

The only reason we're having this conversation is because the NeverTrump machine, which is almost 100% Lefty, is pulling out all the stops to destroy the guy. They're that afraid of him.

In line at Torchy's nobody looks at the menu while waiting. Their tacos are listed: Democrat, Republican, Independent. I handed a menu to the adorable couple behind me. As they're reading I point the area on the page and say, "Their tacos are political." Looking up from the menu the man said, "Guess we'll have to go Independent." He answered from the real world not the taco menu world. I line with a stranger he allowed casual disgust with both parties without saying it. I thought that was interesting. A political poll right there without even trying. The Independent taco is worst of them all. The least satisfying taco. Democrat is the best beef. And Republican is sausage. I think Independent is breaded portobello mushroom.

[The young woman of the couple ahead of me has a much more interesting news feed than I do. Reading her scroll I kept thinking, Damn, I gotta do a lot better. Hers is interesting, mine is not.]

Double down on who you are. By that I mean talk like a normal guy in a normal way. Talk about how the "experts" want to get us in more wars and more trade agreements and more immigration that doesn't put America first. Attack the media even more. When you have a problem with a women like Michelle Fields or Megyn Kelly use sexual jujitsu on them.

Oh wait Michelle you got jostled. You got pushed out of the way. Just like every guy who is in the scrum. Sorry. You are a woman. You are entitled to special treatment. So I would suggest you only come to press conferences where everyone is sitting down. Because if you want equality you get equality. I pay my female executives the same way I pay the dudes. Not like Hillary or Obama. But they don't ask for "special snowflake" treatment. I have more respect for women then that.

Look. I'm about a conservative on most issues as any one. Somethings I guess I'm liberal or just don't give a fig about the issue.

Taking this guy's advice in moderation is not the same a being a pussified Romney type of politician. You can be true to yourself and smooth out a few of the edges. The idea is to WIN. Trump has a core of supporters who like him with the rough edges. The goal is to garner some of those who are on the fence and WIN. A small shift in tactics isn't going to mean becoming other than yourself.

1. Stop arguing with everyone. Good advice. Pick your battles and make it so that YOU are the winner. Defend your wife from attacks. Yes. People will like that. Gratuitously attacking someone who is out of the race ....waste of your time and energy. Be strategic on how you attack but...DO attack.

2.Facts. This is a biggie for me. The facts and not exaggerations. When you over state your case, exaggerate, make huge sweeping generalities you open yourself up to counter attacks. People can disagree with your statements, but if you are factual you WIN.

3 and 4. Policy. We want to hear more. We don't need the gory details or the minutia. That would actually turn people off, but your policies need to be coherent and shown that you have thought about the issues. You don't need to be really specific but something more than the same mantra over and over is not getting it. Built the wall and Mexico will pay for it. Good. Now Trump IS giving some more details and this is important. Learn the issues so when you are asked the gotcha questions....you have some answer or ability to repsond. BETTER YET. Don't answer those stupid gotcha and hypothetical questions. Just don't.

5. Go ahead and cite the polls because if you are ahead it makes everyone else who supports you also feel like a WINNER. But, too much reliance on the polls can bite you in the ass. If you go down in a particular poll and you have spent a lot of time relying on the polls, now they gotcha and you don't have a good response other than to whine that maybe it isn't fair. OK It ISN'T fair. Spend more time with the hopes and dreams of the people who are voting for you. We like to hear about US :-)

Keep on being Trump. Be unpredictable, amusing, direct, blunt, to the point, be the guy we liked in the first place. But realize you need to get the rest of the people to WIN.

Also....screw pandering to women. Women are not some sort of undifferentiated block of people who all march in lock step. I'm not in the least bit offended if Trump wants to call Rosie O'Donnell a fat pig or punch back at that glorified prom queen twit Kelly. When you are attacked do attack back. But do it in a way that doesn't diminish yourself.

WIN WIN WIN. This is the goal.

Not true at all. We are ALL angry. I like the anger and the derision he heaps on the Rinos, the Progressives and the stupid elites that have taken us down this path to ruin. It's about time that someone expressed our anger instead of telling us to suck it up and eat the shit sandwiches. If I could, I would love to punch them all in the nose. See them lined up against a wall...even.

Trump would not need to lose his anger if he changed those things. There are many ways to express anger. Some are constructive and some are not. Flailing around, throwing temper tantrums, exchanging juvenile personal taunts. Not constructive. Properly channeled anger is how you not only win, you bring to your side the rest of those, of us who are angry.

You don't have to back off of your anger. Use it wisely. Use it against your opponents. Be angry like a Patton. Be angry like a Churchill. Be angry and be effective.

He did lose a TV job like Beale.

This. Don't back down. Don't let her play the whiny feminist card. Boo hoo...woe is me...he attacked me and therefore all women. Bull... Hold her to the same standards as you would any other politician. Rake her over the coals and don't be afraid to bring up the hypocrisy of Hillary pretending to be a feminist when she was the one trying to destroy the lives of those women her slime of a husband raped or had affairs with.

Trump does not need to back down from his/our anger. Nor does he have to morph into a mealy mouthed Romneybot. Just use the anger wisely, strategically and be accurate with your statements. Pick the target, aim, and fire.

Your maiden name wasn't Stalin, was it?

LOL

Nope. But I do come from a long line of Irish, Scots and Welsh and our battle cry or motto is "Let's GET the bastards!!!!"

An old joke:

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588 when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards" They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy.
These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile and as usual are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their allies, just in case.

And in the southern hemisphere...

New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA!".
Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the air force being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which is "I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is canceled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

ndspinelli said...

The problem w/ your advice for The Doofus is he can't calmly pick the target, aim and fire. He is purely shoot from the hip.

Well, The Doofus ain't no Patton, and he certainly isn't a Churchill.

nd, Patton wasn't all that great.

In France, he was assigned to protect First Army's and Seventh Army's flanks; in so doing, he had several glaring screwups only partly redeemed by his relief of Bastogne. He did a good job with II Corps in North Africa, but made an ass of himself when he was willing to undercut Mark Clark at Salerno.

He made himself sound more important than he was because he swore and made good copy with his bluster.

Nobody says Trump is another Churchill, but Trump has made his point on issues important to a lot of people. He's done more damage to PC and Hillary so far we can say he does get some results.

You don't have to like him, but, to paraphrase Darcy (if I'm allowed), you do not want to passively elect Hillary.

For those interested, if you want a little better insight into Donald Trump away from the campaign hype, Ann Coulter takes us back to '99, when he was sparring with Tim Russert.

Those who oppose him, but have the guts to read it may be surprised to find a more thoughtful and complicated man than they thought.

So relax, my brother, we're cool. Unlike a couple of other mooks over here.

I get the impression that those who served in II Corps (North Africa) and Seventh Army (Sicily) had a lower impression of him than those who served in Third Army (France and Germany). Possibly because most of the men in the early Mediterranean campaigns were old soldiers (Regular Army and National Guard) and those in France were more likely to be newer enlistees.

YMMV

edutcher said...

It's OK, deborah, but it's always a point worth exploring.

I think that piece could change a lot of minds, if only because of the exchange with Russert.

Sixty, One of my uncles was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was thought dead, started moving when they came through picking up bodies. He spent 6 months in a UK hospital and carried shrapnel in his body until he died. So..I think we can agree he had good reason to hate Patton. My other uncle[other side of the family] hated Patton for his showboating. Patton seems to be someone a soldier loved or hated.

edutcher said...

You tell me, is this a campaign ad by Ryan?.

And I don't mean for the House.

deborah said...

Yes. Yes it is. Just shoot me.

The Dude said...

Yep, ed, the F-i-L served in Europe, I am not certain exactly where, as he told various tales. He was raised in an Irish Christian Brothers orphanage as a child, there was a depression on and all, and he learned a bit o' the blarney while he was there and could weave a tale like a drunken banty son of the ould sod.

He had a facial scar that he claimed was a result of being hit by shrapnel. His fellow soldiers said that he was drunk and while trying to smuggle a bottle of wine back to camp, he fell, the bottle broke, and he got his battle scars.

He may have been at the Battle of the Bulge, his stories changed over time. I only knew him while he was working for New York State, intercepting smuggled cigarettes. He thought he was a cross between Serpico and Popeye Doyle, only without the car handling skills.

So yeah, he was a character, and I think those old time New Yorkers are all dying out.

Ninth was on the northern flank and reinforced First Army after it had been attacked.

I am pretty sure he was Third Army. But as I say, getting at the truth, even when he was alive, was not easy.

Third Army wasn't in the attacked sector. It was tasked with helping reduce the southern flank of the salient.

The first mission was III Corps to relieve Bastogne. XII and XX Corps attacked the southern flank more to the east.

The same scenario was applied to the northern flank.

Ordinary grunts aren't always the best judges of generals. Napoleon sent thousands to certain death to gain an ephemeral tactical advantage in his endless wars.. When things turned sour, he abandoned those armies. Yet his soldiers loved him. When he escaped from Elba, he bared his neck to the French troops massed against him. He asked them to either shoot him or join him in a new campaign. They joined him on his march to Waterloo. About forty thousand of them died and lots more were maimed in pursuit of glory or whatever.......Wellington never received much love from his men. Well, he thought they were "scum" and had them flogged for minor breaches of discipline. But for all that, he made sure that they got paid on time and he declined battles that he could have won simply because the victory would have come at the cost of too many casulties........If you wanted to survive a war, Wellington's army was the one to join. If you wanted glory (and/or dismbowelment by partisans), then Napoleon was just the ticket........Eisenhower, against the advice of Montgomery and Patton, let the Russians march on Berlin and achieve the glory of conquering that city. Some one hundred thousand Russians died in that campaign.
