Shock: Prince Dead at 57

The "Purple Rain" writer had suffered a major health scare just one week ago when his flight made an emergency landing in Atlanta and he was hospitalized for flu-like symptoms. He appeared the following day, however, at a $10 dance party near his home, reportedly telling a jubilant crowd: "Wait a few days before you waste any prayers."

In 2007 Super Bowl Halftime show is considered the greatest in the history of such performances. He also stole the show with his guitar solo on the Beatles classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" during a 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Famesuper-group performance honoring the late George Harrison.

The legend himself was inducted to the Rock Hall that same year, during his first year of eligibility.

I dunno about shock.

The shock seems to be any of these people made it to 40.

In that video, Prince is wearing a hat/head-gear similar to Tubman.
right on.

One of the few talented rock musicians in the past 30 years.

One of the greats of our time. Talented musician and writer, unique personality, stayed true to his roots, put on a hell of a show.

57 is awfully young to be found dead of complications from flu. Not automatically believing that this was drug/libertine lifestyle related since he was a pretty serious without being showy about the Jehovahs' Witnesses. (But then so was Michael Jackson.) But he may have been careless about healthcare due to JW beliefs.

Grant's still on it, but it's funny seeing Ulysses on what looks like Confederate money.

Then again, Little Zero has decided he wants women on the 5 and 10, too.

It has Grant on it.

I don't have him on any playlists. Just checked, everything on i-Tunes is from Diamonds and Pearls, and Thunder and Manic Monday from elsewhere.

When I saw the word "Thunder" I heard that song. Tapped it and heard it for reals. And now I'm a bit sad.

That same thing happen yesterday except I only thought it, remembered it happened before, this same thing. When someone dies, yesterday I recalled this with my father, but also with others, you can call their number for whatever reason and their voice directs you to messages like they're still there doing that. They left voice recordings.

I hate my own speaking voice. When I hear it I'm disgusted. I think, "No wonder nobody ever listens to me. I wouldn't either." It's why I have so much trouble asserting my god-given naturally occurring gravitas filled authoritah. My voice. It's been betraying me all along.

Not ssssso badly asssss Obama'ssssss voiccccce, even sssssssssso, I ssssssstill don't like it.

My favorite Prince song: "Little Red Corvette."

Girl, you got an ass like I never seen
And the ride,
I say the ride is so smooth
You must be a limousine

Pneumocystis pneumonia kills, especially when you stop taking co-trimoxazole due to religious beliefs.

$50 bills are my favorite. Clerks often hesitate to take a C-note, but will always take a Grant.

Let's Go Crazy. My daughter lived in Minneapolis and they are shocked in the nicest big city in the US.

ndspinelli said...

Is that snobbish? I sure hope not!!

I always thought that Morris Day never got his due.

Drudge Report is purple today.

Don't The People have any say on who goes on the money? Quaint thought I know.

RIP to Prince. Loved that guy. Saw him twice. I loved the Minneapolis sound and followed it back in the day. Morris Day wasn't available for comment because he's busy feigning grief.

Methadras said...

it comes in threes. Dorris, Chyna, Prince.

Morris Day is waiting for Jerome to issue his statement.

Google is feeling it with an instant doodle.

He wrote Sinead O'Connor's biggest (only?) hit......He was talented, but he was a little after my time. After a certain age, you stop paying attention to popular music. The music you liked at a certain age you're stuck with for life.

Google doodles are a pet peeve with me, but that one hit the right note.

Me, too! I think Morris is a dj now.

Sounds like Prince OD. Check out "TMZ".

deborah said...

Yeah, the emergency airplane landing was for an administration of Narcan, and opiate blocker.

The Dude said...

Smack is a hell of a drug. Wouldn't take much for someone that tiny to OD.

XRay said...

I liked the movie, Purple Rain, but really, I could give a shit. Did he leave the world a better place than he found it. Or, was he just a fiddler.

AllenS said...

What a miserable life Prince must have had. Just like Elvis Presley, the two of them never could go anywhere public because swarms of fans would overwhelm them. Not hard to believe the two of them turned to drugs.

WTF?

Thank God, despite having been raised even since *before* birth as a child of actual, working, professional, yet not famous, musicians [both dad AND mom], I've managed never to be the sort of snot I've seen folks lovingly, grossly, ignorantly displaying.

rcommal said...

FTR, for example, while rhhardin might maybe know his asshole from a hole in the ground, he surely is not, not in any way, a beacon of knowledge even in terms of stringed instruments. Or chords. No matter the various permutations he keeps pushing.

In general, he's a gratuitous guy as evidenced by his behavior, and he's entitled to do and be that. That's been useful for him for well more than a decade now, and I'd bet that it'll be useful for him for at least 5-10 years (and maybe 15-30 years). Go for it, rhhardin! So that will go.

All that acknowledged, that's why there's a reason both to pay attention and also to ignore overly constant, regular, obvious and aggressive comments, no matter who posts 'em.
