The Bearded Carpenter wants to share with you the knowledge to build your very own log cabin whether off-grid or not.

Top rated Reddit comment:
If you have come to the comments to actually see someone hand build a cabin, I highly HIGHLY recommend this movie by a man named Dick Proenneke who went into the wilds of Alaska by himself and made a cabin using hand tools, and hiking and filming all by himself in the wilds of Alaska. Unbelievable film and one of my favorite pieces of media. --> Link

The guy looks like how I imagine Sixty Grit looks.

Maybe Troop planted that seed.

I was wondering who filmed me, as I don't recall anyone rolling video, but there you have it.

Ha, just kidding, I never wear sunglasses and my hat looks better than that one - mine has a wider brim.

That is a nice post oak burl - it would make a great bowl. Post oaks (Quercus stellata) are in the white oak family and over the years I have only managed to get a portion of one log of post oak. I like working with it.

And he is wrong - it is always easier to do a task a second time because then you know what you are doing.

I like his humbleness and willingness to acknowledge those who taught him. I too was influenced by Roy Underhill, and since he lives nearby I have met him a number of times. I found him insufferable, but I am still indebted to him for furthering my knowledge of woodworking. Ol' Roy was a nice antidote to the methods and style of woodworking I picked up in college - my teacher, a woodworking genius named Michael Jean Cooper has a very rococo surrealistic style and learning the simple ways of forming wood, simplifying the overall form and finding simple gifts was a complete break from my school days in California.

Anyway, you go, bearded carpenter, keep on truckin'.

I believe that the bearded man is Sixty Grit's brother Forty Grit.

Good one, AllenS - he's like me, just a bit rougher!

Love that Proenneke video. Actually have it on DVD from PBS and watch it every few years. It does seem a little forced, with all the staging that must have gone into filming himself, but still pretty amazing.

Listen to his voice — his accent is George W. Bush’s accent.

chick, We drove through Richland Center yesterday, Madison to LaCrosse. Thought of you and your mom and said a prayer. Richland Center looks status quo for the 35 years I've known it.

Highway 14 used to physically go through the town until they built that bypass 25 years ago or so.
