@Trooper: Seeing Foster Brooks dig at Don Rickles made me realize just how brilliant your comparison was to Bags and Trump.

Thanks.

I think it is kind of on the money.

Thanks for posting that, Troop - that has long been one of my favorites. Don Rickles and Dean Martin are barely able to stop laughing - that's impressive joke telling right there, as they were both pretty good at comedy themselves.

"Incidentally, you're out of scotch. And if you happen to think of it, pick up some pretzels." Brilliant.

And that crowd assembled on the dais - Rowan and Martin, Telly Savalas, Rich Little, Lorne Greene (what, they let Canadians in?), Joey Bishop (he needed the work), Jack Klugman, Cliff Robertson and so on. How about the incessant smoking - that alone says that kind of work will never be done again.

That particular roast seemed to be lacking the '60s babes you adore so much - keep rooting around, you will find them.

I loved the Dean Martin show. The Golddiggers!!!!!! Man that was some primo stuff.

Truest line belonged to Dean: Our next speaker has never met Don Rickles. Boy that's a lucky guy.

Speaking of primo stuff, for a while Dean had a regular bit where a chorus girl dressed as a cat lady would come out and wind herself around him as he crooned his best Crosby imitation. She was smokin'. Ah well......

I mean not a 60 year old cat lady, a 20 year old cat lady. Accuracy accuracy.

Thanks for the clarification, RP - I had a vision of the crazy cat lady from The Simpsons doing a cross over on Dean's show. That's just wrong.

Foster Brooks was a regular on Dean Martin's show, too. The "Pilot" sketch was a classic.

Wonderful stuff! I thought I was watching Lem's Levity - the TV show.

Loved watching that stuff when I was a kid. Didn't get most of it, but I thought they were all cool and sophisticated.

I went to a video of a Trump roast from 2011, but that was a mistake. The jokes were all gross, with no sophistication or affection between people. They savaged Trump and each other I don't understand why anyone would sign up for that from people they don't hang with.

The Dean Martin ones were just awesome, and made you feel good about the people involved. The more recent ones make me feel like I need a shower.

Brooks was a big newspaper reporter in Louisville in the 30s-late 40s. There is a famous photo of him hanging in a popular restaurant (Lilly's Bistro-Cathy Cary, Chef) on Bardstown Road holding a camera while sitting athwart the lower cross-tie of a telephone pole on Main street down by the waterfront with water from the 37(?) flood lapping just a few inches from his feet..
