Bad Men

Transcript:
Nilsen: Now, something that’s really important to me — and my audience — is women’s health. And recently, I was shocked to learn that pads, tampons, and other menstrual products are taxed as luxury goods in over, in 40 states. And I don’t know anyone who has a period that thinks it’s a luxury, because it’s-
Obama: I think that’s fair to say. Michelle would agree with you on this.
Nilsen: Yes! Because it’s something that’s part of our everyday lives and is really crucial to our health as women. And so, I want to know, why do these items continue to be taxed?
Obama: I have to tell you, I have no idea why states would tax these as luxury items. I suspect it’s cuz men were making the laws when those taxes were passed.

But mens health is so poo-poo.

Koch fault, I'm sure. I better buy stock in tampon ear-rings. I suggest you do the same.

Blaming and division is Obama's first instinct. Is in his DNA.

Sounds like BS. Sales taxes are not luxury taxes. How else is the state gonna pay for all the free stuff wymens want?
The Tampon-in-Chief should be thrilled to be considered a luxury item.

I knew it was just a matter of time. At long last, just seven years into his tenure, Obama has finally said something that I can agree with. I too feel tampons are not a luxury item. Although, I feel certain that if you did a state by state breakdown of which states impose this onerous tax, you would find that most of them are not red states. (Heh, heh, he said red states in reference to tampons.). The President can launch a crusade to repeal this tax. The lost income could, perhaps, be made up for by taxing two ply toilet tissue as a luxury item. I think it would be the most significant and enduring part of his legacy if he made the tampon tax disappear.

How and where is the "luxury tax" levied? Certainly not by retailers. It must be levied by wholesalers if the story is true (which I doubt).

Here's The Map complete with a picture of Sour Patch Kids candy hanging next to the featured Gentle Glides and Pearls.

Also noted at the bottom: Clarification: Wording was changed from the original post to reflect the 40 states that charge the "tampon tax" may not specifically call it a "luxury tax."

@MamaM: The map reminds me of Walter Mondale's electoral victories.

When I hear "luxury tax" I immediately think Monopoly. So maybe if they said tampons shouldn't be taxed like food is not taxed, they'd get somewhere. "Luxury tax" invites divisive, class politics -- as if some McScrooge were involved.

I have a men's health related story too dreadful to tell. An undiscussed tax. Sadly, an example of idiots merely at work. Idiots in charge of things. With power to wreck people's lives at the point in their lives when they need help the most and too stupid to understand or to process or care about the damage they do.

I have told the story in bits and the people who listen go, uh huh, mmm, uh huh, agreeably enough but I'm understanding all along that they're not grasping the full dread of it, not feeling it enough, they don't behave blown away enough, I'm not relating it right, I'll have to find a way to get at the pathos. I think of it in sign and see the guy walking off shrugging their shoulders, "watchya gonna do?"

WhatamI gonna do? I'm gonna keep at it, now that I'm fired, and not stop until I see a woman one in particular cry. Become distresses. Question her ways. Quit her job. And bother the shit out of everyone involved.

Let's look at the bright side of things instead, for now, today a lot of things happened and I was in the presence of two wonderful people who know things that would blow your mind. And at one point today a doctor snapped a clip on the tip of my finger like a gentile clothes pin attached to a Radio Shack box with a digital display, the doctor goes, "Well, huh."

"Look at that."

He shows me the display, "97"

"So? What does it mean?"

"That's your oxygen carrying level. Your blood's ability to distribute oxygen."

"Shouldn't it be 100%?"

"No. It's rarely above 90%"

\o/

I'm going to be awesome at sea level. Thank you, thank you. I would like to thank my parents and God and all you splendid blood donors. Together you are just fucking awesome and I mean it.

You are in conversation and you are expected to know what it means, they troubled to be precise about it, so it's not just "clean" but kind of like that.

I use maxipads as bike helmet forehead pads. They've spent billions to get them to work holding fluids. They're so much better than the bike helmet sponges.

The recent "New! Drier!" ones though disintegrate much faster than the old ones. Not all change is better. I must write in a complaint to Kroger.

Food isn't taxed in Wisconsin. When I go to the grocery store, I pay no tax for tomatoes, steak, milk...

I pay tax on toilet paper and other non-food items.

My opinion is that any tax was levied because some politician was greedy for power.

Non-prescription sunglasses are taxible items in the Sunshine State because the patriarchy wants you women saddled with cataracts, allowing our many non-muslim rape gangs to keep you in a constant state of pregnancy

Don't taxes come from the state?

Who taxes us? GOVERNMENT. It's Obama's fault.

When you whittle it all down, when you cut away all the strutting and cockiness, Obama is a guy w/ serious mommy and daddy issues.

SO, will the government give up this tax? No way. Government never gives up an opportunity to tax. Gov only layers on more. That's why we are all poorer & the government parties on.

I demand an executive order repealing the tampon tax. I will wear these silly tampon ear-rings until I am freed.
