To think that Bowie was only 22 years old when this was released is mind-blowing. In a five-minute turn, Bowie manages to tell a story that can easily serve as the plot to a two-hour sci-fi film. The song was revolutionary for its time, musically and lyrically, and helped introduce the masses to one of the most dynamic and creative music acts we will ever know.
Okay, I admit that is good but my choice would be "Changes" or "Young American" or "Modern Love."

If you say run,
I'll run with you
And if you say hide,
We'll hide
Bowie sang lots of memorable duets with artists as diverse as Bing Crosby and Freddie Mercury. Don't forget that.
I catch a paper boy
But things don't really change
I'm standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye
But I try, I try
There's no sign of life
It's just the power to charm
I'm lying in the rain
But I never wave bye-bye
But I try, I try
I had just turned in for the night, pushed on the radio when I heard.
The name was familiar of course, but I had a momentary senior moment and confused him with Billy Idol.
It may go back to when I was first getting acquainted and committed the same error.
There is a cool GIF going around.
Reddit is all abuzz with him.
Jean Geenie the old rocker, was another of his personas (and fave songs) that I liked as well..
Golden Years
Heroes
Under Pressure
Fame
Suffragette City
Yeah, Golden Years for sure for me, Amartel. Although I was not a Bowie fan per se it's amazing how many of his songs I really liked yet didn't own a single album of his..
Is the NYT use of the word "transcend" on its Bowie obituary lead a not so veiled reference to his sexuality?
Inquiring minds.
Could be, Lem.
Space Oddity
The only time I ever saw Bowie live was at the second Us Festival in 1983 in San Bernardino, CA. We called it the "Dust Festival". 670,000 in attendance over 3 days. Check it out for an incredible lineup of bands. Bowie was the very last act on day 3. It was his "Let's Dance" period, which I could have lived without, as my Disco hatred lingered on. All I remember is lots of dirt, water cannons, and sleeping in my tiny MGB car for 3 nights. I saw lots of boobies though - muddy wet boobies. A Steve Wozniac production aimed at ending the "me generation" of the 70s. That goal fell short.
Just too weird for me to relate to in any other way than as a novelty.
I do remember a post about a Bowie song.
The Bewlay Brothers
What ever happened to Eric the Fruit Bat? He's in the comments at your link. Long time no read.
The guy was a genius and that early stuff was important because it represented his attempt at a cultural adaptation to the scientific advances of the space age. It was his vision of a less constrained society, with fewer limits, reflecting the barriers broken down by the findings of the time.
The other really cool and under-appreciated song of his was with Trent Reznor.
Though the family kept his illness a secret, I think it also came as a shock because of how youthful an appearance he maintained for so long.
As someone today said, first hit in 69, his last release was at age 69, and he died at 69.
I will miss the guy to no end.
RIP.
