Like the turning of the earth...we never think we will get old

In 1985 I bought season tickets for the New York Knicks when they drafted Patrick Ewing in the first pick of the draft. I got two tickets for $12 a seat for 40 home games plus two exhibitions. All in all it cost about a grand. I kept buying the tickets for 17 seasons as they got more expensive and the Knicks failed to win over and over again.

On that early team they had a good little player named Gerald Wilkins. He played shooting guard or small forward. Not much of an outside shot but he was very athletic and could go to the hole. Nowhere as good as his brother Dominique but still he was a very serviceable player and a fan favorite. The reason he was a favorite was because he was a happy guy. Always smiling and happy on the court he was great when he met the fans. I met him a couple of times at team functions that I got invited  to as a season ticket holder. All  in all I liked him a lot.

Now basketball has abandoned me. Filled as the game is with hatred towards white people and our country the league is not for me and I have haven't seen a game in five years. I don't know one player on the Knicks roster. Gerald Wilkins has fallen even more than my regard for the game.

"Former New York Knicks guard Gerald Wilkins was reportedly arrested on assault charges Tuesday after a string of arrests over separate incidents earlier this spring.
Wilkins, the younger brother of NBA legend Dominique Wilkins, faces two counts of battery after he was arrested in Cobb County, Georgia, TMZ reported Wednesday.
The second-round pick has had numerous run-ins with the law lately and was cuffed three times in 10 days over late May and early June."
The Gerald Wilkens I knew is long gone. The game of basketball as well. I never thought I would despise the game and its players so much. But it is par for the course. I never thought I would despise Brooklyn the way I do. I can't even bring myself to talk about the Yankees I am so distraught.
You can only go on and try to carry on and drop the things that have changed beyond redemption. Nothing ever gets resolved. Nothing ever gets better. The dystopian horror that I read about in so many science fiction stories seems to be upon us. Nothing anyone is doing seems to make it betterr.
It's like putting out fires with gasoline.

Queen Bitch: David Bowie

Last night I was re-watching The Life Aquatic  on Netflix, when this song come on at the end, and then just a little while ago, I came across a Victoria Tweet where she is commenting while watching #The Crown via Netflix. When it hit me.

This is kind of interesting when a kind of synchronicity hits. I just have to be a little bit aware.

KLEM FM

Aside from the chance to post yet another Pixies video, I chose this one because seeing photos of the Ft. Lauderdale killer reminded me of someone. Then I put it together. Look carefully at the man in green in that video. Even the name. Uncanny.

David Bowie explains what he saw in the Pixies:

"There was such a lot of sludge in America at the time..."

Temporal Powers

This is a dead cat bounce of the David Bowie remembrances from last week.

Here, Bowie plays Pontius Pilate to Willem Defoe's Jesus of Nazareth in Martin Scorcese's "The Last Temptation of Christ." Is this the only cinematic "duet" Bowie ever spoke? He was so good at musical ones.

There's an imaginary exchange in that clip about a future to come: that of Rome dying. Of course that's exactly what happened. But these days, neither Rome nor Roman Catholics have much temporal power.* I even think it's hard to measure which one had a more lasting influence, putting everything on the scales.
___________
per Google: Temporal power is a term of art in medieval and early modern political philosophy to refer to worldly power, as contrasted with spiritual power. The temporal power (simply), the state (polity) or secular authority, in contrast to the Church or spiritual authority.

David Bowie

Ultimate Classic Rock suggests of all his hits, "Space Oddity" is David Bowies number one song of all.

To think that Bowie was only 22 years old when this was released is mind-blowing. In a five-minute turn, Bowie manages to tell a story that can easily serve as the plot to a two-hour sci-fi film. The song was revolutionary for its time, musically and lyrically, and helped introduce the masses to one of the most dynamic and creative music acts we will ever know.

Okay, I admit that is good but my choice would be "Changes" or "Young American" or "Modern Love."

David Bowie: The Bewlay Brothers

"The Bewlay Brothers" is a song written by David Bowie in 1971 for the album Hunky Dory. The last track to be written and recorded for Hunky Dory, this ballad has been described as "probably Bowie's densest and most impenetrable song". Bowie himself supposedly told producer Ken Scott that it was a track for the American market, because "the Americans always like to read things into things", even though the lyrics "make absolutely no sense". Reflecting on the song in 2008, Bowie wrote "I wouldn't know how to interpret the lyric of this song other than suggesting that there are layers of ghosts within it. It's a palimpsest, then."

We were so turned on
By your lack of conclusions...

"If you are a true Bowie fan and know the genesis of the song in all it's torment, gorgeous symbolism and haunting style then you will know that literally everything he ever had to say subsequently has it's roots here."
