I didn't watch. But I am noticing a collective hack media rant against Rubio for rehearsing and repeating:
"...what’s at the heart of the critique? That Rubio rehearses his answers? It’s campaigning malpractice NOT to do that. That Rubio often answers in 25-seconds? That’s usually how much time he has in these debates. That Rubio often repeats his lines? Hey, did you know Chris Christie used to be a prosecutor? That John Kasich’s dad was a mailman? That Donald Trump thinks this country never wins anymore? All of these candidates repeat their lines. Most Americans don’t watch a lot of politics; every appearance is an introduction to voters."
The media is running with he used the same rehearsed line four times during the debate. In the post-debate analysis on Fox, I think Stoddard made the most salient point: Rubio and his team knew this line of attack was coming, and didn't prepare for it. Rubio has a glass jaw.
Before Mickey Kaus, before Chris Christie, before the hack media got on the bandwagon an insightful commenter at Lem's Levity wrote this:
"I'm undecided on Rubio but leaning towards "I don't trust him."
Why? Every time I've heard him speak, whether in a debate or an interview, he pulls pre-written talking points/mini-speechs out of his head instead of responding directly to the questions. It's a nice talent, Obama has it, others do it but not as slickly. But if you listen carefully or read a transcript it becomes apparent that those talking points are carefully crafted to appear to say something without really saying anything. It's almost Clintonian in nature. He has an encyclopedia of prepared responses available on demand, but I would like to see him in a format that reveals to me what he really is thinking. I haven't seen that yet.
I went from mostly positive to mostly negative during the Fox Business News debate (the last one Trump was in) when the FBN moderator asked a very well phrased question on Rubio's position on immigration, legalization and amnesty. My ears perked up and I thought I would finally get a clear reading on just where he stood on the immigration issue. Instead Rubio dodged the question and went into a mini-speech on terrorism. It was disappointing."
Oh, yeah, that was me. Could all those guys be lurking at Lem's?
Particularly when considering Obama is not running. Even if you make a successful connection between Obama and Hillary, that they were running things at one time, Hillary is not at that podium. Focus on the people to your immediate left and right.
True enough, April, but last night's example was just weird. It was as if Christie pushed Rubio's play and rewind buttons a couple times in a row. You really should have seen it.
Rubio was following instructions. When something you are doing is being shown up, like Christy was showing up Marco Rubio, you have have to have the wherewithal to counter it. Not go back to it, confirming Christie's point.
When Marco countered about the snowstorm, that Christy had to be shamed into going back to his state to be present for, Rubio had nothing more in the tank against Christy.
Exactly, Lem. A further part of Stoddard's comment was Rubio didn't think he had to take Christie seriously, just head him off at the pass. But Christie took him apart like and uncle deflating an indolent nephew. The difference in age and self-assurance was striking.
Also, at the beginning of the debate, there was an introduction mixup because the applause did not allow the debaters to hear the call to come to the podium. Creating a sort of pile up where Dr Ben Carson and Trump held up waiting to be called. But it gave me the impression that Trump, waiting next to Carson, could be interpreted as a kind gesture by the big guy to wait with Ben, not to leave him behind.
Had I watched you'd be having a drawing of Megyn Kelly's legs.
Rabel, Broncos, how interesting.
Everyone around here is dressed up in blue and orange in collective colorization, a mad agreement to accessorize similarly on a city-wide scale, perhaps even statewide. Stylized horses everywhere. The line at Torches is too long, a herd of orange and blue and white horses, so off to the deli but the line is too long with a herd of orange and blue and white horses so off to the burger place with no one in sight but inside packed with a herd of orange and blue horses.
I struck it up with a short compacted tightly manicured but unmade up lesbian lady as we both waited, I told her it reminded me of work when everyone would come in depressed on Mondays, a joke, and she graced me with the warmest most tender heartwarming story of her and her father attending games with season tickets. She made me understand emotion based on loyalty displaced to a sport team beyond one's control. Wishing intensely does not complete a touchdown as clapping does not bring back Tinkerbell.
[When the audience clapped in a Tinkerbell skit, my Bronco fan friend turned to me puzzled and asked, "Why is everyone clapping? How did they all know to do that?"]
I hope you're right for the wellbeing of my city. But I told the lady and this allowed our conversation to happen, speaking from ignorance, it seems to me looking from the outside … one league is more fierce than the other, more borderline otherworldly, more willing to live in the legal gray area, more drug-y khat chewing type insane than the other. My money would not be on the Broncos. Speaking from football ignorance. Speaking from the outside. Here I really do hope I am wrong. And the woman agreed with all that.
Her story of her with her father really is touching.
Christie didn't help himself, he only damaged Rubio.
Who needs enemies? Yeah -yeah I know Rubio is a massive let down on the immigration front, but he has a lot of positives in other areas. If he can beat Hillary, I really don't care if he's Hitler.
@ me - All of these candidates repeat their lines.
@ chickl - True enough, April, but last night's example was just weird. It was as if Christie pushed Rubio's play and rewind buttons a couple times in a row. You really should have seen it.
Maybe Rubio needed a good a$$-kicking. I do agree we don't need another teleprompter prez.
Christie had me cheering when in response to the assertion that 68% of Americans think we should tax millionaires more, he replied that the 68% are just wrong. They tried it in Jersey and lost billions in tax dollars, jobs, and they now have no need to return even after reversing it. Candidates need to make such sound compelling arguments about policy differences instead of attacking each other on trivia that really means nothing to the future of the country past election day. Most of the debate is on the subject of horse race trivia, including the questions.
A "bitch slap" might be more fittin'. It was fun to see that term come up here at Levity and then show up at Althouse, where the Mighty Laslo himself took on the mantle of elucidation, explanation and embellishment. Shades of Bissage with an anal fixation! Plus one with a nose for biaches, bitches or anything emitting a whiff of submission or manipulation that calls for a domination response.
As for Rabel's "It's almost Clintonian in nature." observation, the elusive but present Essence of Rubio was captured in 5 words, or less if the "almost" is dropped.
At the end of the debate, after watching the last half and missing the drama of the first, I turned to MrM and said almost the same thing that chickelit posted in his comment regarding his feeling "that Trump will pick Ben Carson as his running mate." I didn't pick up on Trump and Carson complimenting each other; what stood out to me was Carson's integrity of character, and gentle sparkle of humor which clearly comes through despite his quiet demeanor.
Picking Carson would be a sage move for Trump. As neurosurgeon and a director of neurosurgery, Carson has extensive experience working with and around Big Egos, in addition to bringing to the table a capacity for problem solving, and an ability to function in a leadership position within a setting requiring teamwork, focus and commitment to problem resolution.
deborah said...Chick s/m wise do you mean it seems they're laughing at Rubio's expense? That's what it makes me think of.
Christie's expression could be one of pain (taken out of context). I'm assuming that Trump's would look mirthful from a different angle. That's what I meant.

Plus he ain't a damn lawyer like Cruz, Rubio and the Clintons. The country seriously needs a break from that kind of leadership.

While I'm on a roll: Broncos by 3.
Rubio's robotic recitation was really off putting.

What did you find of note?
I got the feeling that Trump will pick Ben Carson as his running mate. They compliment each other in many ways.

Marco should've had more to hit Cristy with.

Chick, I confess to seeing only the last forty-five minutes, were Trump and Carson complimenting each other :)
Since I didn't watch, I don't know if it would have jumped out at me Rubio kept repeating the phrase, with minor variations.
Also, the pundits/journalists analyzing in between segments was obscene. I mean REALLY? Did they kick off the noticing of the repetition?
I just found out Friday the Super Bowl is today, and who is playing. From what little I've gathered, I'll go with Carolina. What's the spread?
Megyn Kelly's legs.
Does a naughty boy need a spanking?
Christie and Trump during an intermission last night.
Reminds me of the Christie-Obama love hug photo in 2012.

An entirely camera driven moment.
They all revert to talking points. but yeah - Sometimes you gotta do better.
The media's relations with Ben & Blu Grandma.
Had I watched you'd be having a drawing of Megyn Kelly's legs.

OMG Lydia (hi) trigger warning next time. That pic should be in every anti-Christie commercial on both sides.
Christie didn't help himself, he only damaged Rubio.

omh - Rubio is Hitler. I knew it.

There's also something a bit sadomasochistic about it.

Lem, thanks, doubtless I'll see it on the endless replays between now and Tuesday.
April, that's great...the leg hanging out is the kicker.
Chick s/m wise do you mean it seems they're laughing at Rubio's expense? That's what it makes me think of.

Guys who are new to the big stage tend to choke up when the bright lights are on and the pressure is turned up.
Therefore: Rubio = Cam. Maybe.

@Titus: Are you sad that Bosty-Wosty isn't playing today?
Rubio is a robot.
Downright "rubotic"

I want a POTUS with a smart consigliere, not a POTUS who wants to play that role for some of US.
Of course, I am devastated chick.
We should be there.
So sad.
tits.
Trump will pick Condoleezza Rice as his Vice President choice.
Or Amarosa.
Wait a minute. They could be the same person. Nevermind.
Troop sometimes you are so fucking funny.
Tom Brady just walked out at the super bowl when they announced previous MVP's and he got booed-
If you want to know what I look like look at the lead singer of Cold Play. Everyone tells me I look like him.
My mom just called and asked who he was, because she and my dad thought I was singing at the Super Bowl!
lol.
Do u want to see my face?
You have seen my body and my tricks, but do you want to look at my face.
All grindr fucks require face pics.
