What do these US military bases have in common?
Fort Bragg, Fort Rucker, Fort Hood, Fort Lee, Fort Benning, Fort Gordon, Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Polk, Fort Pickett, Camp Beauregard (Operated by the Louisiana National Guard)
They are all named for Confederate generals. There’s been talk for years about whether this is appropriate, and now in wake of Charleston and the South Carolina Confederate flag, it’s coming up again.
Do you think these posts should be renamed to honor people who fought in the U.S. Army exclusively? Vote, and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Frankly, it's not nearly enough that the Confederacy be disappeared. All of American history prior to the election of Hussein should be disappeared and the calendar itself be disappeared and replaced by the year of Hussein's election as Social Justice Year One.
Lest we be reminded that states have rights, we must stamp out all evidence of such.
After who would you then name them, the guys who fought Indians?
That won't fly.
How 'bout guys that fought in Mexico, or maybe in the Spanish-American War?
No, that's un-Hispanic.
I know, Fort Georgi Zhukov, Fort Vo Nguyen Giap.
Yeah, dat's da ticket.
Ricpic - you cracked it. that's it. Historic Nirvana can be achieved.
Anyone want to give serious odds that the spineless current group of PC Generals & Admirals that Obama has installed won't take this idea under serious consideration despite how the polled troops feel about it?
Ah Virgil they'll be bought off by being offered to use there names as the new name. After all, we now have a USS Gabby Giffords.
Yes, of course, the fort names should be changed because then the world will be a far better place tra la la la.
They won't be flying Old Glory over these newly named forts, just a simple white flag.
No, and hell no.
Why not name everything Barack Obama and just it let it go at that. You can identify it by number. You know Barack Obama One or Barack Obama Two. Simple.
Since he is the only American we should recognize.
What a load of crap.
The question is misleading. The proposal is not to stop naming bases after Confederate Generals, its to REMOVE the names and rename them.
BTW, to do this with cost millions of taxpayer dollars. Plus, Lee and several other of the Confederate Generals served in the US army for years and did good/excellent service in the US Mexican War.
The most important part of historical remembrance is making sure that atrocities are commemorated in a way that makes them seem like honorable acts.
The base names were set up to help integrate the South back into the military establishment since a great deal of the manpower came from the South during the two world wars. In fact I would venture to say that the majority of the regular army long term troops both black and white hail from the South. It honors our honorable enemies. To bring back estranged brothers into the fold.
It has nothing to do with the events of today. Just more politically correct bullshit from the same sources.
Well, here comes the radical marxist left white-washing of history because blacks died by a lunatic holding a confederate flag in a picture with a gun. Nevermind that more blacks die at the hands of blacks than any other demographic, but there is no outrage there. In fact, it's totally ignored.
Is there any more politically correct insanity that these radical ideological lunatics would like to foist onto the rest of this country and its history? They will never stop once they get a foothold, america has been warned about this leftist progressive scourge and people just poo-poo with a chuckle and a dismissive tone, but here it is right in your face and now you are the hater. Now you are the racist. Now you are the bigot. Now you are what they want you to be for speaking against them and their lunacy and idiocy. How about renaming schools? How about renaming streets? How about renaming towns? How about... They won't stop until they are stopped.
Black-on-black crime TOTALLY justifies commemorating causes defending white-on-black slavery and other white-on-black racism anywhere evermore!
I'm not too sure why we have Ft. Bragg, since he wasn't a very good general. Maybe we can keep his name, given his service to the Union (unintentional).
Most of these bases were named after Confederate generals during WW 1 and WW 2 and IRC they tried to match up the army base with the Confederate Generals state. After all, since they were asking a bunch of no-good, racist, white supremacists, Southerners to go and fight Hitler, the least they could do is name a few bases after the Rebels.
Its amazing how the flag issue brings out the Left. They love any issue where they can just run around and shout "racist, racist, you dirty rotten racist".
Boring.
These Generals did not commit atrocities. The only one where you have a point is Nathan Bedford Forrest who was a slave catcher and did commit atrocities. I don't think anything was named after him. Nor should they be.
I would be glad to concede your point if the bases were named after overseers or slave catchers or plantation owners or slave traders.
I mean I would be outraged if they named a fort after Hammond Maxwell.
That would be wrong.
Even if they did craves it.
There will never be a Fort Law Boy.
What AllenS said at 5:08 PM. "No, and hell no."
With my long experience at various "forts" I'd say the heritage has long been converted to pure Americanism. Among my favorites is Fort Brag. I am delighted that what was once called "Camp A.P. Hill" is now "Fort A.P. Hill." My memories there training medical and judge advocate officers are among the most hilarious of my time in uniform...we had two weeks a group to make them soldiers. I suggest the hard cases try that and not wind up laughing their butts off. Truth is that one did not go all harsh on the doctors, who very well might be looking down at you in a surgical or Evac unit down the road...which in my case, they were. Their worst violation was to save one live round to send to a girlfriend or whatever....so I got very good at counting every round issued, fired, and collected so that we'd have no "barracks accidents" unnecessarily. Some of us prepared spent rounds with a new bullet inserted so they could still send dead rounds to their girl friends...which I suppose was against no end to the number of rules. Given my experience in an Evac hospital, I don't regret it. Trust me. Those doctors, with their medics and nurses, were life savers who gave a damn.
BTW "TOP-Toad" you never cease to amaze with your remarks about things you have no idea of in reality. Your presumptive omniscience is astounding.

Troop, Fort Pillow is the source of some debate among historians and some rack it up as Yankee propaganda.
Everybody agrees the garrison never surrendered and the issue is that Forrest's men say the Yankees were withdrawing, firing at the Rebs as they moved.
Given that Forrest otherwise seems to have fought a clean war, there's room for doubt.
I don't think anything was named after him. Nor should they be.
There's was an Army camp in WWII (may still be in use) named for him where (interestingly) the 5th Ranger Battalion was organized and trained.
Forrest dealt in slaves, but no mention of being a slave "catcher".
From the article, sounds like he did what he had to do to keep the family going.
YMMV
I have to disagree ed. Fort Pillow was an out and out massacre. You might as well name a fort after Chivington. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a great general but a bad man.
As I say, YMMV.
But he was no Jefferson C Davis
One thing I do like about him is he disbanded the Klan and his views on race changed.
If only the Supreme Court hadn't declared burning the American Flag to be protected hate speech, Dylan Roof could have been arrested long before he walked into that church. Not sure how naming a military base after him would have helped, but I'm sure since Meade suggested it, he can explain himself.
I would hope that EBay and Amazon will also stop selling Nazi and Soviet paraphernalia and flags. A little consistency would be good. Just sayn'
That won't happen, at least the Commie stuff, but I'm not going back there.

I think they ruled that way because if they ruled under the "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances" clause, it never would have flown, so they pulled out another of their penumbras.
Of course, there might be someone we could ask, but I don't believe they do requests anymore.
The Confederates killed White soldiers at Fort Pillow too. You can go read the Survivor's testimony online if you wish. How many were killed in the heat of battle and how many were deliberately killed when they tried to surrender is still being debated.
But Forest didn't order a massacre and tried to stop the excesses. I doubt Grant, Sherman, and some of the other Union officers would've been so friendly toward him after the war if he'd been responsible.
If you want stuff that's hard to figure, why does Kentucky have a statue of Jeff Davis in its Capital? Unless, its the statue of Jefferson C. Davis - who was a Union general.
You have to wonder where the Left is going to stop on this issue. After all, the American flag was a "flag of Slavery" until 1865, and we have lots of Presidential monuments to slave holders.
Maybe the end game is call the Founding Fathers dirty rotten racists, pull down all the monuments and tear up the Constitution, which after all is the product of White Supremacist Slaveholders.
I heard Rommel was a good military leader. Maybe we should name bases in Germany after him: Fort Rommel. Or Fort von Manstein. Forts Albert Speer and Ribbentrop would be good, also. Examples of the valiancy they showed. Very brave.
The Nazis fought bravely and valiantly. It's not their fault that their cause was wrong, or that it lost. They deserve to be commemorated, too.
Bunkers will be named, Hitler's Hideaway.
You guys are fucked in the brainstems.
A fort is a fort. Name it after something fortified, like a former plantation, maybe. Fort Tara - just like in Gone with the Wind. Or name it after Rick Perry's ranch. What was it called, again? Something-"head" ranch?
Fort Auschwitz has a great ring to it, also. Maybe even Fort Buchenwald. Fort Bergen-Belsen. Nothing wrong with commemorating the wonderful ways we had of leading and defending forced labor.
Ritmo's holding out for Fort Stalin - his idol.
Then Fort Molotov, Fort Trotsky, Fort Beria, Fort Dzerzhinsky, Fort Lenin, Fort Marx, the list goes on forever...
Yeah, why not. As long as you're all about Fort Nazi and Fort Plantation Defender, then ok. I'll be for Fort Stalin.
But only because you're for the Nazi and Plantation Defense Forts.
Fort Edoucher. A place without many showers, but with running vinegar and water everywhere.
Fort Edoucher. A place where you can douche your mind free of the liberality.
Douche your mind, and your ass will follow.
the list goes on forever…
Sure does. Fort John Locke. Fort Rousseau. Fort Nietzsche. Fort Bennington (United Colors Version). Fort Cincinnatus. Fort Beverly Hillbillies. Fort Gracchi. Fort Socrates.
How many tens of millions did Stalin kill (after repulsing the Nazis - eDoucher's heroes)?
Maybe he should have added one to his list. Just one. I know exactly the right one to add to it ;-)

52 million in all, about 1/5 of which he killed after the war.
Oh, and he wanted to finish what Hitler started with the Jews. Fortunately for everybody but Ritmo, he died before that could happen.
PS Ritmo, as always, blowhard and hypocrite that he is, makes it up as he goes along, about me, about everybody. Notice he really never denies the Commies are his homies.
And he seems to have an obsession (fetish?) with feminine hygiene. Better get that investigated before he becomes another Bruce.

That's all?
Damn.
Edoucher, why don't you go and volunteer to make it 52 million and one? You know. To improve your victimhood credentials, inflate the fear of Stalin, and, just because you've got nothing better to do anyway.
Give it a try. You might even like it.
Is that a cry for mercy, because once again Ritmo runs off at the mouth, projecting his own weird neuroses onto everyone else?
He asks a question, I answer, and he is sufficiently sociopathic to think the murder of 10 million people is a joke.
Fight that suicidal impulse and seek professional help.
Edou - I'm just encouraging you to try things, so that you can know for sure if you really like them or not.
You know. Expand your horizons a bit.
Don't be so closed-minded, Ed. Don't be like Stalin.
And he seems to have an obsession (fetish?) with feminine hygiene.
Hey. A clean pussy's better than a dirty eddie!
Go to bed, Caitlyn.
Or is it Rachel?
It's funny how "conservatives" are more interested in "conserving" a Confederate loss than they are a Union win.
The more I read about Robert E. Lee, the more I like him. So anything named after him should stay, in my opinion.
That must be what Titus said he saw in Waunakee. Of course he was "Ellie May."
I hope it's still OK to have Lynyrd Skynyrd in my iTunes.
You are not allowed to use Dixie cups you racist you.
@Rhythm and Meade: Here's someone for y'all to defend.
Have at it!
Rhythm and Balls was the one who wrote that there cannot be such a thing as a black on white racist because--numbers!
And Meade of course was Crack EmCee's biggest defender and financial donor.
Hey TOP-Toad, do you want to revisit your vicious attack and bull crap attack on Paladian? Just so you you know, I despise you for every word of your assault on him...and I'd not mention that except that you were full of crap then, and now. Odd how, years later, we have a relationship of art work, involving multiple hundreds of dollars ( sum over 4 figures) , not your itty bitty pittance of a coupe hundred (you whiny bitch boy) ...which you whined of endlessly. He was a guy who needed a hand up, not your punk whiny nonsense. You are too small a man to gather that, aren't' you? Within the past couple weeks he has provided me with a original commission of a lovely piece of work, for my daughter and another is on the way for me. Funny how money wasn't the issue and he's been paid in full...while you are an uber punk with puerile snot about a simple print? For which you were reimbursed without your acknowledgement (coward)...you tiny little man. Evan is more a man than you will ever be...try as you might to be a disrupter and tough guy...you are a punk. You don't like what I say, well little boy, I'll be happy to give you the info to locate me and let you show me just how tough you are...you sniveling weenie.

Aside form totally missing the point, you are in effect a nothing more than an willing agent for an ideology that seeks to justify removing, expunging, and purging history for the sake of political correctness. You are basically exchanging one narrative for another and calling it appeasement. You are a willing participant in an ideology that has seen the deaths of over 100 million for the sake of capitulation or death and also a willing participant in a political party that used and defended slavery for their own ends. You belong to a political party that used secession as a means to entrench slavery into their own nation and lost. You are a willing participant in a party that defended such acts. You are willing to sacrifice a countries history to assuage the guilt of past misdeeds not realizing that using this history is an act of atonement meant to remind people of past wrongs.
But nope, you, your party, and your ideology would rather erase history to suit your own nefarious aims to paint your party and its ideology as the savior of mankind. Since history will be revised, you will make it into what you want. You are wrong and you always have been.
