Lieutenant General Stephen Wilson, commander of US Global Air Strike Command, said: “I don’t think we’ve ever seen so much power put in one person in Russia, and some of the things happening there are troubling and concerning for everybody.”...
“Some of the actions by Russia recently we haven’t seen since the 1930s, when whole countries were annexed and borders were changed by decree.”...
Lt Gen Wilson, also used the briefing to accuse Russia of risking lives when its military jets fly unannounced close to Western countries’ airspace, or near to corridors used by international commercial airliners.
“When we fly, we fly to a flight plan – we announce it, we ‘squawk’, our transponders are on, we are talking to air traffic control, we are following all international laws,” he said of USAF and other Nato missions. “That isn’t happening with Russia. You’ve got contested airspace with people flying all the time, you’re unannounced, you’re not on a flight plan, you’re not squawking. We would not do that. It puts people at risk.”

"US nuclear missile commander says Vladimir Putin's actions echo those of Nazi Germany in the 1930s"

Fore!
If Putin did not consider what Russians have always called "the near abroad" to be within Russia's sphere of influence he would be completely out of step with Russian history. His attempt to re-swallow Ukraine, or as much of Ukraine as he can, or Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is very different than Hitler swallowing Czechoslovakia into a greater Germany. That had no precedent in German history. The Germans had no illusions about the Czechs being little Germans. The Russians have, for hundreds of years, thought of themselves as big Slavs, and Ukrainians, Latvians, Estonians, Lithuanians and Poles as little Slavs, whose proper destiny is to be incorporated into Russia.
The acquiescence of Chamberlain, the intelligence of Edward VIII.
I'm sure the USA Fed Gov would be quite ok with say, Germany (1915) or France (1862-1867-what was going on in the USA then... hmm) getting involved with say, Mexico. Overthrowing that government and influencing it against the desires of a country that borders it. Might be a security issue. Might interfere with a national doctrine, say a Monroe doctrine.
I'm sure Russia in history has never had any military threats that might make them worried if surrounded (Mongols, Muslims, French, Germans). Nevermind that the eastern "Ukraine" as it was post USSR is Russian Crimea and been in their control since the USA was founded. But yeah, lets have our state dept. admit that its been trying to overthrow Ukraine for 10 years and get mad when Russia reacts negatively.
Watching China's actions towards Taiwan is similar in what Putin has been doing with Ukraine. I wouldn't be shocked if they agreed to both to fracture the US priorities on which is more viable to protect.
I'd trade Putin for Obama, a second round draft pick, and a Senator to be named later. Would we be any worse off, assuming Vlad would be a team player? You'd probably want to check him for steroids.
It's interesting that the General went for the Hitler comparison and didn't bring up Uncle Joe. I guess that would have pissed off the comrades in the White House.
Putin is going to make his move while Obama is still in office. He knows that he will not do anything. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if Russia and China didn't coordinate their moves. What if Russia went into the Baltic and China went after Taiwan? What are we going to do about it? In fact what can we do about it no matter who is President? Not much.
I would give Japan Nuclear weapons. That might even the playing field.
Troop,
we just need to let the Japanese know its okay to activate their reserve plan.

Inja, of course, already has them, but, yeah, it would scare the Hell out of the Red Chinese. The Nips and the Reds hate each other and the Nips have always been the better fighters.
