Everybody here knows I'm not too fond of what modern higher education is producing, but honestly, don't you think that only an extensive modern university education could form a mind that would make that comparison. One of our greatest such minds is on display here. She has a point in that the process of establishing guilt or innocence is about as intelligent as witch trials, but that is directly due to people like her. I'm sorry, guys, but much of legal profession is pure emotion-driven bullshit disguised as illogical, over-reasoned bullshit. Astrology and palm reading is more consistent and comprehensible. Additionally, the licensing is way easier, and it produces better results at lower cost.
The wise Latina ought to spend a weekend in the ER of the University of San Juan Hospital (in her beloved Puerto Rico) among the TPIs and stab wounds, as The Blonde and I had to do about 5 years ago.
Watching how those injections were earned.

That's because you can't bribe a seer. She just tells you the way it is.
Of course, my comment is a hypocritical screed similar to what I'm accusing lawyers of, but nobody chose me to decide important things. Some people do trust me, but that's based on my track record, not my credentials.

Well, when the US legal system attempts redefine everything under the sun. This is what you get. We might as well just call it Voodoo.
I may have written this before, but I've come to the conclusion that the legal profession in this country is overwhelmingly made up of failed English majors. They did well in college by writing fanciful interpretations of works of fiction and poetry, but weren't good enough to get jobs that put those skills to work, so they went to law school where they now write fanciful interpretations of our laws (and our words.) We may never recover.
Besides the carbon emissions, what's so bad about burning at the stake? Ever since they outlawed all the entertaining methods, capital punishment had gotten increasingly dreary and pulled lower and lower ratings. I think burning at the stake probably does a great job of eliciting remorse, which we seem to value in our murderers for some reason.
When you shoot a bunch of 'fellow citizens' up in a theater, in cold blood -(for no reason other than to satisfy your deranged f'ed-up insane delusions) you are no longer a "fellow citizen". You are a criminal and you need to die.
Those who are kind to the cruel, will be cruel to the kind.
What else can you expect if murder is just something "fellow citizens" do? Ritmo, if I ever commit a horrible crime, I'll be expecting at least a bunt cake, and I better get it.
AprilApple said... You give up your rights as a "fellow citizen" when you kill all these innocent people for no reason.
Why do leftists drool and fawn over killers? Why do leftwing hearts bleed for the lowest common denominator?
That's a great question. Even if it's an exaggeration, they approach that caricature, and don't deny it. That's why it looks like a collaboration with evil.
Ritmo wanted to give voting rights to felons until I pointed out that isolated prisons could vote themselves into community power. Actually it's kind of what happens already in "isolated" communities like Detroit.
I bookmarked a rather longish article written by a patent attorney on how judicial STEM ignorance is undermining American competitiveness because of recent decisions reached in US Patent law. Haven't read it yet, though.
How does it feel to be too hateful to identify as American any longer?
It will be quite nice when the conservative, self-styled "true Americans" find that they weren't able to define their Americanism through anything other than a reactionary hatred, a reactionary hatred that became too regressive and hateful for even the American people, with whom they claimed to feel such solidarity, to care for them any longer.
I hope you enjoyed that silly cowboy Reagan day in the sun. It's fading pretty fast, isn't it?
Highest incarceration rate in the world, half of them non-violent "offenders," you say?
NOT HIGH ENOUGH! ANY AMERICAN NOT IN PRISON IS SUSPECT!!! WE SHOULD JAIL A FOURTH OF THE POPULATION AND EXECUTE AT LEAST HALF OF THOSE, STRONG EVIDENCE AND COMPETENT COUNSEL BE DAMNED!
Did I summarize your attitude accurately enough, guys?

we need to release those poor souls in order to wreak havoc so that they may execute a decent portion of the law-abiding white overpopulation.
Balls, you are the one who classifies people Like the Aurora Theater shooter as a "Fellow citizen".
He's not my fellow citizen.
He's a criminal and he doesn't belong in society any more.
Why does your heart bleed for him?
Attempting to point out that your classification of murderers as "fellow citizens" is mainstream? I don't have anything to say but barf. Look a poll! People love murderers now.
An argument can be made that we have too many people behind bars. WE also live in a relativity safe society. We could turn ourselves into pick-pocket Europe. Perhaps we should just open up the prison doors?
The issue here is Sotomoyer's opinion that lethal injection for murderers is just too cruel. Her honest opinion is that she would like to end capital punishment. Full stop. Now. with her gavel. If those 5 people in robes could rule over us with their opinions and their gavels, they would.
Highest incarceration rate in the world, half of them non-violent "offenders," you say?
Lest we be mistaken, non-violent offenders are not given the death penalty. So I sense ritmo has decided to change the topic.
What is it now ritmo? Should we talk about how gun control laws have lead to absurd phobia for other weapons like pocket knives, which likely lead to the arrest and death of Freddie Grey? Or should we discuss how Obama is continuing the war on drugs as a weapon to confiscate the legal funds of lawful business owners, who happen to deposit and withdrawn funds in a profile matching what the DoJ refers to as drug activity? Because either way, I'm good with shrinking the size of the oppressive governments that enacted these laws.
But make no mistake, neither gun control laws or drug laws are capital crimes involving the death penalty. It takes murder to be sentenced to death, and that is most certainly a violent act.
It's almost like gliberals believe that we must unilaterally love and trust those who wish to harm us more than we love those who won't.
There's that mature, black-and-white thinking.
No, we just expect you to be mature and objective and not emotional vengeance-freaks when it comes to the application of justice.
It's not so hard for responsible grown-ups.
Aside from the minutia of the way law is now, justice is and has been about one thing and one thing only, regardless of what you think or understand it. It is either innocence or guilt and in that, innocence allows for freedom, while guilt is about vengeance. That's it. If you have done wrong and are found guilty of it, you can patty cake it all you want, but in reality, it is revenge/vengeance for the wrongs you have been found guilty of.
Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord. Yeah, well, come on down and let's see it. Otherwise, stand back and let us deal with it, mkay?

I agree with a lot of what you're saying (collectively). I just think that anger is not the best state of mind through which to judge either the guilt/innocence of someone or their sentencing. Between love and vengeance there is another option. Neutral objectivity. It's not the same as mercy; it just recognizes that emotional extremes usually don't lead to a righteous or just outcome.
Sorry if it seemed like I was trying to change the subject.

Why worry about a STEM degree when you can get a law degree and just redefine what things like gravity, chemistry, and physics mean?

At least it wasn't going out on a white horse. Now that is racist.
Isn't it wonderful to see how glibly we can react to fellow citizens being chemically burned from the inside? Awesome!
Being a Republican an exercise in the wonderful art of deciding how awesomely which citizens should be deprived of any rights.
Ritmo, in his gated community, is wondrously apart from the kind of vermin that roamed New York State this past week.
The guy that lived will get hearings, psych exams, three squares a day, a roof over his head.
Here's what his victim got.
If Ritmo wants to be merciful, a pistol round, behind the left ear always works.
Go on, Ritmo, be merciful.
I'd like to burn the Aurora shooter from the inside.
Retribution. Make it happen.

You don't have to be "kind" to not be cruel.
Anyway, I love it when you hate both me and the Founders equally:
"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."
How does it feel to be too hateful to identify as American any longer?
