They met about 1 p.m. near Avenue M and East 84th Street in Canarsie, where the Sam got into Pierre's Honda Pilot and pulled out a gun, a police source said. The teen allegedly stole the Jordan Retro 8 sneakers and then walked away.
Sam managed to make it only about 100 yards when the 39-year-old driver made a U-turn, stepped on the gas, striking Sam. The teen was pinned against the fence and his right arm was severed "completely," a police source told PIX11.
"He technically did disarm him," a police source said.
Missing his arm, Sam tried to jump on an MTA bus, where he demanded a MetroCard. Just then, Pierre yanked the teenager off the bus and told the driver he'd robbed him. Then Sam escaped his clutches again and ran home, where he collapsed in front, a police source said.
An ambulance took Sam— and his severed arm — to a Brookdale Hospital. The teen was listed as critical but stable condition. Doctors tried to surgically reattach his arm Friday night.
The driver faces an attempted murder charge. His relatives said his actions were done in self-defense.
"He was just there to help support his family," Pierre's cousin said. "What would you do if someone pulled a gun on you?"

It is attempted murder. He can argue heat of passion to reduce the charge, but he tried to kill him and it was not self-defense. If I was the judge though, I'd call it a fair exchange. He returned the shoes, and he got his arm back.

We sell a lot on Craigslist and the process of meeting with the buyer is a pretty dicey proposition. You never know who you are going to meet with....as a buyer OR a seller. First rule is to meet in an open public place that has a lot of people coming and going, during the daylight hours where you are not going to be alone or isolated. We have found that some of the larger and very busy truck stops on the interstate are a good spot.
Some places have established meeting spots for these types of transactions that are in lighted areas, with posted cameras and some are actually right in front of a police station.
I bought three significant things off Craigslist and met great and helpful people each time. Craigslist is ace.
The guy in the story didn't care about his car. Just plow it into a fence with a thief between them. He did intend to kill him.
And this sports shoe fixation occurring among guys is weird.
Each story akin to this one sorts through to a memory set decades ago. Men were talking about a story like this, of a teen robbing Mercedes for their stereos.
In my early twenties I was speaking to a man of means, "If I caught anyone breaking into my car I'd kill them if I could and without compunction."
The individual my age was shocked. He said, "I'd let them have it. No life is worth a stereo."
I said, "You don't really appreciate this whole keep your fucking hands off other peoples' property, do you? "

This is where fathers come in. And where absence of fathers figures in. And where church training comes in. Absent those two stabilizing (most the time) things and you end up with a vacant philosophy that accepts thievery as normal acceptable understandable behavior.
I admit he made a very good point. A life is not worth a stereo nor a pair of shoes. Give it up. Still the philosophy of "just take it" and politics of envy are unacceptable. The dude I was speaking with, now dead, was the highly politically active type. Donated to Democrat candidates all the time, even that young. A control freak type. Spendthrift with everyone else's money. Big spender too. Fascinating individual, but it was always other peoples' money. Everybody else's money. He was so good at it, so big thinking, so splendid so grand in everything that he actually did make quite a lot of money himself but all that was incidental from designing Allmilmo kitchens out of a Cherry Creek office.
I bought a car off a Craiglist posting. I overpaid, I didn't do my homework.

I'm with bags. If he had killed him in the Honda Pilot, then yes a strong argument for self defense is made, but after the kid got out, this guy drove off, did a u-eeeeee and rammed the kid trying to kill him. Then chased after him again and pulled him off a bus. That's attempted murder, but like bags if I was the judge, I'd throw it out and call it Shoes for an arm, you still get to live and your Honda Pilot has a little blood on it. Have a nice day.
