Monte Kali

A mountain of table salt.

It is a manmade mountain, the byproduct of potash mining. Located in the small town of Heringer in Hesse, Germany. It's been building for a hundred years. The process also produces potassium. The dumps contain 96% sodium chloride.

The internet site is a lovely and interesting and pleasant place. So it's surprising and distressing and amusing at the same time to see people being unnecessarily ugly in comments. It goes against the thrust of the whole place.

* Grumble
Why would you not package it as table salt and make more money whilst saving the environment?

* Anonymous
Don't you think if it was profitable they'd be doing exactly that? Or are you so arrogant you assume that that only you have thought of the idea? Oh, right: "whilst saving the environment." The fact that you used that phrase means you have the economic acumen of an eight year-old.

How rude!

The site doesn't get many comments but this article caused a few more.

Who has time to comment here any more? Reading these loooooooonnnnnngggggggg posts take up all the available time. Fascinating I guess.

If brevity is the soul of wit, I’m at my wit’s end.

Yeah, I know, who is this guy anyway?

I rarely comment but I’ve been here since the beginning. Love you Chip. In moderation though. Seriously dude, you’re killing it.

I’ll fade back into the wallpaper now.

Apologies. I honestly thought this was short.

I'll try really hard to be shorter.

They're waiting for a margarita glass.

And long is sometimes necessary. Just ask Ron Jeremy. It's how you fill it.

I'm surprised that things grow right up to the base of the hill. Plants have little use for natrium chloride (NaCl) but they need kalium (K) which has been depleted. Plus we all know from Chinatown that saltwater is bad for glass.

BTW, the major use for all that potash was for making of kalium nitrate which goes into gunpowder. The Jerry's nitrate supply was blockaded by Tommy in WW I which led them to invent the Haber-Bosch process which we still depend on for fertilizer. So in a twisted way, German aggression has fed the world. Sheesh, I should do another overly-long blogpost on the topic.

If Trump ever took over Monte Kali, he's turn it into a money making endeavor, employing hundreds of people. Winning.
