The socks don't appear to match. Which I find more unsettling than the childishness of the red stripes, as they associate in my mind with Raggedy Ann and Andy socks.
Under the guise of humor and playfulness, I'm wondering if the socks are a passive aggressive way to convey FU with regard to the "rules" he's had to live under? It goes along with the fanny grabbing and lame cover joke.
I'm feeling more charitable today. Maybe the socks are a playful visual deflection, to take the focus off the rest of him and fend off a "My goodness, he looks old!" response.
