The previous owner loved roses and grew them here, there, and everywhere. I wanted them out of the area where I intend to grow herbs and vegetables. I dug holes, threw in some compost and transfered as much root ball as I could.
I gave away two to a woman up the street who makes bonsai. She really liked the look of the gnarly wood.

You missed the ‘people might think this is a Chip post.’
Remember when I said I was going to... tame the tags, if you will, and I posted a bunch of rules about what constituted proper tagging?
I gave up shortly there after, considering how it had grown into it’s own untamable entity.
As far as I’m concerned there are currently no rules on tagging except maybe for the moderation one.
Yes. There is such a thing as too many tags.
Or ‘people might think Chip posted this’ is probably accurate.
If you look closely at the photo I posted you'll see a greenish circle in the dirt which is a cap for one of several French drains. It was clogged and set way too low. I think that's what cause the red brick patio stones to discolor white.-- poor drainage. The soil here is very high in clay and drains poorly.
On the other hand, and upon further review, the brevity of this post should dissuade veterans commenters of the impression Chip posted this ;-)
There are five separate rose varieties. I watched them bloom all summer. My favorite is the one in the middle - thè fan shaped one. It puts out very deep red - almost blackish blooms.
If anyone knows a good book or website for rose care, I'd be grateful.
I don't do rose care anymore. They are too bloomin' finicky for my taste. I tried for several years and it was a constant battle with aphids and leaf mold/mildew. They're fussy about being transplanted too.
I first thought this was a Sixty G post.
We had a large rose bush at home. They always bloomed about June 1. My sister called them her birthday roses.

Not unlike the snakes that killed Laocoon and his sons. Or was it the hydra?
