It's from pter, wing. As in helicopter.

Other weirdly syllabalized but suddenly realized words are pre-gnant, a-mnesia.

A lady at work published a memo that suggested a pneumonic for something or other. She remembered there was something weird about the word.

As I was wandering around it dawned on me that prognosis should derive from "fore knowledge".

What do you know I looked it up and found "Late Latin, from Greek prognōsis, literally, foreknowledge, from progignōskein to know before, from pro- + gignōskein to know — more at KNOW."

The more you gnosis, as they say.
