Internally, people have immediate reactions to things. That's tough to choose at the moment of an event, but the pattern can be affected over time. Long term internal states are mostly chosen, I think. External states, apart from true reflexes, can be almost entirely chosen, in my opinion. (Then those go to affecting the pattern of internal states and so on.)

Hopefully I am not pestering you but I am always immensely interested in this type of topic.

That brings up a ton of more questions--but I think I'm bordering on being unfair by putting you on the spot.

I also hope you aren't offended by my use of the term--"unusual" there was a better term.

The English--it still defeats us semi French.

I too need to clone a hd disk to a larger hd disk. The last time I attempted that ( I forgot what software I used) I failed and ended up having to rebuild the new hard drive from the recovery disk. Are there concise instructions from Clonezilla ,on how to do it?

ampersand: There are concise but barely-adequate instructions. I managed with the links at TechRepublic and Clonezilla.org.

It wasn't as hairy as I expected, but I wouldn't recommend it to a civilian. As theribbonguy chortled, "it's linux," and that means you're expected to know much priestly lore before you meddle in the affairs of wizards.

I do see some youtubes for stepping viewers through Clonezilla. YMMV.

Deborah, you told me that my Paul Lynde sounds like Jack Nicholson. I did a few of Titus as Paul Lynde.

But here's a different one for the ladies and for Meade. It's a little twisted (inspired by Archie Campbell) but the story should be familiar. link

Omg--I am so there.

No, I remember him as sometimes impatient with people because he was just so far ahead of them, intellectually, but he was always a gentleman

Not always. I haven't seen many of the movies, but my fave clip is when he and Watson have been called to the house of a man who has been terribly frightened. Holmes stoops down to eye-level and gazes for a few seconds into his shaken, shocked face and then bursts out a short, sharp laugh. It was perfect.

Don't go by the movies (or that God-awful PBS thing), go by the original stories.

One of my faves, the Adventure of the Speckled Band, has a young woman coming to 221B for help; she's tentative, afraid.

The ever-observant Holmes pushes back the heavily-laced cuff of her sleeve to reveal a hand in which all the fingers have been broken off, "Madam, you have been cruelly used", the supposedly woman-hating Holmes breathes in outrage.

Thanks, creeley. Hey, I completely crashed (blue screen of death) may Dad's Inspiron One 2305. Do you imagine someplace like safer networking forum could talk me through it, or will I have to take it to Staples (is that safe?) or call Geek Squad?

deborah: It depends on how bad the problem is and how comfortable you are working on computers. Also, on whether there is important data to rescue.

If you're backed up and it doesn't look like a hardware problem plus you have a recovery disk or you can hit F8 or some key to get to the recovery partition, then you can try that.

I don't know about the safer networking forum. From what I've heard Geek Squad's OK, but they may not be able to do much for you unless you're willing to pay a couple hundred dollars. With current hardware being so cheap, that's a tricky decision.

If you've got a hacker friend willing to consult, that's a good start.

We just need Ann to fire the President, and Lem can move in to the White House. I would be willing to try that. I don't know much about Lem or his qualifications, but that's how we do it now anyway. At least we know what we're getting rid of: the worst recovery in history.

Obama is like Althouse in that from what he says, I'm pretty sure he despises me, so Lem is more likely to appreciate what I bring to the party along with my bitter clinging and victimhood.

The opening credits for a Bond movie are special, having that rare ability to get you excited for what's coming. It gets you in the mood for a sexy ride through danger, adventure, and humor.

I just keep getting more and more enamored with the past, especially the culture of the 60s and 70's when I was growing up. It all seems so improbable now. It required a naïveté born of near unblemished success in all things. The success of WWII, and science and modernity culminated in the entertainment world in a way that may never be seen again. Even during the most serious times and with serious subjects, entertainment seem to be able to rise up and fly above it in true escapism. We are all too tightly wound today for that.

Or particularly reflected Jesus, though he also had a bit of a sharp wit on occasion. And Tertullian had his turn towards heresy, so not a good example in that regard either.

Also, I love that when I asked that question, I suspected that you may have read his works, and am delighted that its true. It's this sort of thing that kept me commenting on Althouse.

"basic self control."
Isn't this the concept that set off the commenting implosion. People having self-control is a very offensive suggestion. Possibly anti-human.

Nick, other than using the royal, "We," what was she supposed to do? These were questions directed to her, about her and about her work, her plans, her feelings and opinions.

Narcissism is when Obama gives the go ahead to take out Bin Laden and makes it seem like he is the most important part of the operation because he uses "I" over and over again in his announcement. Or when he constantly uses "I" when speaking of decisions involving scores and hundreds of people if not the whole nation rather than "we".

My left hand knew exactly what my right hand was doing - not out of a pious seeking of praise from others - but from wanting Lem to get a buck or two for all the time he has to spend herding all the free-riding food-throwing puke-hurling beta cats around here.

So now someone who doesn't agree with your donation advocacy is painted with this characterization? Is this for real? Coming from you? Some could make the argument that you are the very description of what you just reflected to the rest of those you think have slighted Lem by not wanting to cough up cash in your attention seeking way. You know what Meade, that's great that you donated to Lem. Did anyone else need to know? Does anyone else really care?

I did it purely out of self interest:

Self interest is usually silent and modest. You displayed neither and when challenged on it, you are lashing out.

The longer he's able to keep this gig going, the longer I will be free from the homo-hating hominids and crybaby male movementists emailing their tantrums to me over Althouse finally (thank heaven) turning off the odious sewerage of comments at her blog.

Two words need to be thrown your way: Fuck you. You don't get to call anyone who doesn't agree with you on this point a homo-hating anything. What your wife does with her blog is her business, same goes for Lem I'm sure. The distinction it seems is that his skin, unlike collectively both of yours appears to be thicker and more resilient to such sewerage. You're preening is very metro beta-male.

Now, would a buck or two for Lem's administrative efforts really kill you?

See, now you are just being a passive aggressive asshole. And to answer your question, no it wouldn't kill me and I assume anyone else. The distinction is that people do not like having your particular brand of sanctimony used against them as a means by which that money flows from us to him. You aren't the arbiter of our cash, we are. And frankly, your insipid attacks on who is a hater and how doesn't toe the line for the agenda set in your household as a reflection of those that disagree with it is bullshit. Stop doing it, Meade. It's unseemly and you have traveled into sanctimonious schmuck territory. You don't know shit. Keep it that way.

"Who's your neighbor? Is the man at the other screen your neighbor?"

Okay.

I find that as long as I listen to that consistently, the temptation lessens and lessens. But sometimes, though I hope less and less often, I give in, and then, in addition to immediate regret, there's that prowling lion pacing about, encouraging a replay. Yow!

Their coverage was better than anything the Milwaukee news rooms could conjure, and I was grateful as a Wisconsinite for their fine and tireless work.

Aristotle defined a meek person as one who is angry on the right occasion and with the right people and at the right moment and for the right length of time.

In the Greek world of biblical times the word for meekness was also used to describe domesticated animals that had been trained to obey a command and to accept control. A man or woman of meekness has his or her life under control, especially the emotions.

I believe stoics believed that to feel was to be controlled by emotions and the things that triggered them. I would be willing to bet that does not describe Freeman but I'd have to ask her family and friends.

Well, the name of the blog is Althouse. Remember when she did podcast's and talked about herself for an hour? It was part of her popularity.

Her blogs success was originally due to people wanting to hear her opinions about things. Later, her commentators added to it, maybe even overshadowed her, but its really all about her.

That's what personal blogs are about. Its like criticizing an autobiographer for writing too much about themselves.

rcocean said...

Stoics believe that react to others is in effect to be their slave. You do X, and forces me to do Y.
