Men First, Children Second, Women Last.

So goes a little bit of a story, a woman introduced to us former? Althouse commenters, and whom I proceeded to call Smoking Lady, where she, tells a Canadian journalist writing a piece on her, the Smoking Lady - Women Oppression is basically a Myth.

Here is the video of Smoking Lady telling the story of how the title of this post came to be ...  you can skip up to the beginning of the story, the fun part, at 1:40 in the video.

I find Feminism is very mockable*. Bra Burnings? ... are you kidding me?

Inga, if this is you, people want you to self identify. you don't have to if you don want to, but it would make it easier on Ed.

Just because you like her doesn't mean she will like you.

I will, however, play along. If all we get is the same act we got before, or what Troop got, I'm prolly going to scroll right past the way I did usually did with Ritmo.

It's the problems she gives you is what counts.

Women are essentially children and need to be treated as such.

Reward when good, upbraid when bad. Respect is earned, not given.

I watched most of the video. I have known women who converted to Islam, I never understood how an American woman could do that. That video helped explain some of the appeal.

I still have problems with female genital mutilation, Islamism and jihad, but what are you going to do, am I right?

edutcher said...

Maybe it's me, but it seems the appeal is that the man is obligated to be the head of the household and master of all he surveys.

Think the whole, "Oh, Harold, you're so... masculine", thing.

I like your Boston accent.

One woman in particular that I am thinking of was a very outspoken feminist. She flipped to subservience. Seems very strange to me.

All I know is I am not converting - I don't care how hot the babes are. Okay, the ones I have known were not at all hot.

If I want something to obey me I'll get a dog.

Witness the old Arab saying, "Women are for children, men (or goats) are for pleasure".

I don't do online video. Takes up too many megabytes. I have to pay for them.

That was a fascinating video! I watched all of it. I had no idea that under sharia law a woman had no responsibility to share her earnings. I just assumed that her husband had the right to her earnings, which is probably what happens in fact if not in sharia theory.

I also didn't know that a Chinese woman has no legal or societal responsibility to care of her parents. That makes sense because I'm sure it was assumed that the wife would be drafted into service to take care of her in-laws.

That's one ballsy chick! I'll check her stuff out.

And, Lem, thanks for giving us refugees a safe harbor.

I can't exactly explain it, but there is something about that woman I really like. I just wish I was in that kitchen with a cup of coffee and could just talk to her. I think she would find me a good listener even though I'm not naturally one. I just want to ask her questions and then listen. Sip sip.

BTW, I did fly today, no engine, no fuel, silent and beautiful and free. Best of all, I survived, and I can prove it if I have to. I love summer, the mountains, the sun, the miracle of free flight, and candy cigarettes, which I consumed 20 boxes of today. Now finally at 10:30pm, with the dogs all fed and sleeping and me just out of a hot shower I settle into a glass of white wine, some delicious calamari marinara, and the digital stylings of the newly christened Lemmings - a fine commentariat indeed.

How did Lem get this video of Titus?

Actually, women in Islam do not have much rights. But Islam does have one feature which is pretty clever. Pre Islam Arabia had the dowry requirement on daughters (so infantcide was common to avoid having to pay it). That is still common in India and China where female dowries are still required. In Islam, there is a negotiated contractual dowry that the man gives to the woman, which becomes the settlement if he divorces her. So there is a financial penalty in the event of divorce, but no obligation to support her beyond that.

Feminism isn't about empowering women to support themselves, but about obligating men to support women.

deborah said...

Feminism isn't about creating freedom for women but economic bondage for men.

That sounds like a porno.
