The elephant bit was not funny in and of itself - it was funny because his coworkers could not control themselves, eventually resorting to using a bad word and falling on the floor laughing. That right there is funny. *snork*
But the slow motion roll down stairs (I mean, just imagine how hard that is to do in real life) is funny physical comedy. I laughed out loud when he hit is head on the piece of furniture at the bottom of the stairs. Funny stuff. I can't even imagine how he kept his balance and avoided actually rolling down the stairs.
Tim Conway hosted the first episode of "Turn On" in 1969, It was supposed to be ABC's answer to Laugh in. 2 stations went to a blank screen after the first commercial break. 75 stations refused to air any future episodes. It was essentially cancelled before the first airing finished. I did watch that show, I don't remember anything about it but at the time my reaction was "WTF?" too.

Okay, that was funny. Funnier than the elephant schtick.

He will be missed. A comic master. Why doesn't SNL find more guys like him?
Oh I know why.
They suck.
