*smiles and grins* A lot of progressive diaper filling. How can we trust law abiding citizens with guns? Hashtag# poopy diaper.

April, Bingo!

Impudent subjects - who do they think they are, citizens?

I'm not familiar with the apparently new Illinois statutes, but I do hope they require a pre-permit training regimen. Ideally an NRA course with minimum of 8 hours with an ideal of 12 hours, including 4 hours of instructor guided range time....including how to shoot and scoot from various positions. Best course I know of is that used by "The Firing Line" in Westland, MI...a place run mostly by cops and ex-cops. It is the one I joined my daughter in and found it worthwhile even for someone like me who has actually used side arms in combat. It helped unload some old bad habit baggage that my kid didn't have to do.

As someone who has handled firearms since 1949, and hand guns in my own right since 1964, I was not put off by the new course & certification requirement. I've carried for 50 years now and the requirement for training even for old soldiers who carried M1911's in hostile venues is to be applauded. I have v-e-r-y rarely even drawn my pistol as a civilian...and even then I kept it "concealed" behind the back of my leg. Once you bring it up and in to view, you'd damn well better be certain of you legal right to fire it...and fire it.

Practicing without making it an obsession is a good idea...and Kim & I meet up every other Saturday to do just that at paper targets.

Guns are serious implements and you can never have too much training and practice. Foremost you must understand your standing as a civilian, not a soldier or police officer. You must know what the line really is that must be crossed prior to engaing with lethal force....and get it that once you draw a weapon you should be confident enough to fire it...otherwise leave it concealed.

If the murder rate goes down, wont that be a set back to gun control advocates... and to Obama. Dont foget Obama. We dont want to make him look bad.

virgil xenophon said...

"Don't forget Obama."

Isn't that the point? Isn't that the reason he's stated he's staying in D.C. after leaving office? He'll be like Zelig and Forrest Gump all rolled into one..

PS: He's "The Magic Negro," remember?

After the media lied, provided twisted half-truths and portrayed Trayon as an innocent child, and Obama jumped in with his Jesse Jacksonesque inappropriate political racially motivated butt-in, the "Knock out game" is on the rise.
So, Obama has that to be proud of.
& no guns!

Exactly correct in all regards. My kids went through long gun training while in middle school. Good instruction, plenty of practice.

My wife and I went through CCW With an ex-military, ex-cop instructor. Superb training former someone who had to shoot a perp who drew on him while on duty. And we get a bit more training from very skilled shooters who own the range where we shoot.

Part way through the CCW class, during a Q&A session the instructor pointed out a few individuals and said "your training is over, I'll refund your fee, please leave." It was apparent that those guys were simply looking for permission to shoot anyone who bothered them.

I hope IL has reciprocity. I want to carry when I'm in Chicago. It's getting to be a scary place, even downtown.

The Dude said...

Haz, that class story is kind of scary.

Around here the authorities dig through one's medical records with a fine toothed comb. Every hospitalization, every surgery, all medications, it's all gone through. Also, one's criminal record - any arrests, associations with felons, it's all looked at.

Spend time on a range punching holes in paper and if nothing else, one should be impressed by the destructive force that firearms have. They have to be respected.

Sixty:

In WI the background checks are done after the CCW Class has been completed and the instructor provides the appropriate paperwork.

The guys who were asked to leave we're asking questions like "Why can't I lean out the window and shoot the guy trying to break into my car?"

The Dude said...

I guess not everyone understands that theft, breaking and entering and destruction of property are not capital crimes.

In NC you can actually shoot through your door if someone is trying to break in and you feel your life is in danger.

However, if someone walks in, picks up your television and starts to walk out, without threatening you, you may not shoot them. Wave as he walks by.

There are plenty of ambiguous cases, too - you see a guy beating a woman in a public place - you pop a cap in him. Then you discover she had a knife and had been attacking him and he was merely defending himself.

Big oopsy.

You walk into a store, see a guy with a gun and pop a cap in him - then you notice that there is someone on the floor. The armed guy was an undercover police and has interrupted a robbery. Oopsy.2.

Bottom line - every bullet potentially has a lawsuit attached to it.

How much justice does your current net worth allow you to purchase?

Sixty, I've heard (don't remember where) that people make self-defense mistakes and shoot the wrong person much less often than the police do.

Makes sense to me. The idea being that you're not coming onto a situation after the fact, but actually do see what's going on and who did what. And I would hope that you wouldn't be viewing any person with a gun out as a presumptive bad guy if you're carrying, too.

But I think that most training is extremely clear about not expecting to be a junior crusader for justice... as well as expecting that if you *do* have to shoot someone there is a good chance you'll get arrested for it.

Sixty, Can't you shoot the motherfucker in the leg?

Legal disclaimer - the movie "Zombieland" should not be used in lieu of proper firearms training, nor should you cite it as a legal precedent in a court of law.

No actual zombies were harmed in the making of this comment.

I have a friend that carry's one of those mini-single-shot/5-shot 22 revolvers--the kind with an exposed trigger that one has to cock each time to fire. He loads 22 magnums. Calls it his "parking lot" gun (to get one safely to the car late at night.) Probably saved his life (or at least prevented serious injury) and that of his date late one night in Cincy when five "youts" approached and it wasn't to ask what time it was. He whipped it out when they got close, pointed it at the lead thug and said: "One more step and I'm blowing your throat out." They retreated tout suite lol.

(And trust me he is the kind of guy who would pull the trigger w.o. the SLIGHTEST hesitation)

Sixty Grit ... one of my favorite self defense rounds.

Pssst: it is essentially the same as Hornady's 45 ACP Cricital Defense rounds....with gimic packaging.

The Dude said...

Good one.

And, just so we are clear, I have home insurance, which I hope I never need.

I have collision and liability insurance on my truck, once again, I hope I never need to use it.

The same thing is true with self defense - I seriously hope that the need to use a firearm to defend myself or a loved one never occurs. It would be traumatic and I would have difficulty dealing with the aftermath.

But, as with insurance, better to be prepared and not have the need than the reverse. Once a slug leaves the barrel it cannot be recalled. One better be as certain as humanly possible that you are doing the right thing.

While homicide rates are linked to firearm possession rates, at least guns are used at a much higher rate (by 61%) for committing suicide than for committing homicide. So at least the gun nuts are doing the proper thing and using the devices to off themselves. It serves them right for living in so much fear of everyone else around them. A very fitting and poetic result, I'd say.

And where perchance do you live and operate in daily?

Me? That'd be Detroit. Am I a "gun nut?" Donno. I've carried most every day for 50 odd years, except for the daylight periods I worked in the federal building here where there are more guns per occupant than the average infantry company....side arm stayed in my truck during work hours because there was no need otherwise and the law said so. As far as my gun nuttiness, all I can say is I have not shot a living thing since 1972, when I ceased hunting as well. Still shoot trap, and paper target with pistols...the same pistol type I used in combat long ago. I have never drawn it that I didn't fire it.

If you think that carrying a gun "makes someone safe" or relieves fear, then you do not know what fear is or safety either for that matter. It is a tool and if you are already in fear and that is your reason, do not buy or carry a gun.

Ritmo:

Do you truly believe that it is "the proper thing" for people who disagree with you about gun ownership to kill themselves?

How despicable.

The Dude said...

Well, the good news is when the SHTF we know that the Rit Mos of the world will not be willing or able to defend themselves, or their families.

Good riddance to those idiots.
