Wisconsin: The End Game For La Raza?

An interesting archeological site in southeastern Wisconsin is called Aztalan State Park. There are earthen pyramids and physical evidence that the people who dwelt there were in commercial contact with peoples of the Gulf of Mexico. For still unexplained reasons, the site was suddenly abandoned around 1200-1300 A.D.

 Wiki takes pains not conflate the word Aztalan with Aztlán, but the words are related:

The name Aztalan was given to this place by Mr. [H. F.] Hyer, because, according to Humboldt, the Aztecs, or ancient inhabitants of Mexico, had a tradition that their ancestors came from a country at the north, which they called Aztalan; and the possibility that these may have been remains of their occupancy, suggested the idea of restoring the name. It is made up of two Mexican words, atl, water, and an, near; and the country was probably so named from its proximity to large bodies of water. Hence the natural inference that the country about these great lakes was the ancient residence of the Aztecs.

Liberating Aztlán is the end game for La Raza and even more sinister groups. That the ancient Aztec Empire extended to Wisconsin appears to be one gringo's fantasy. But whose fantasy is it that the Aztec Empire once included the American Southwest?

I hear more and more Mexicans talking about la raza—to build up their pride. Some people don’t look at it as racism, but when you say ‘La Raza,’ you are saying an anti-gringo thing, and it won’t stop there. Today it’s anti-gringo, tomorrow it will be anti-Negro. We had a stupid guy who just wanted to play politics with the union, and he began to whip up La Raza against the white volunteers, and even had some of the farm workers and the pickets and the organizers hung up on La Raza. "Dark complexioned couple shamefully beats up victim... for being in the "wrong hood"

A confrontation outside a Milwaukee gas station turns violent and the disturbing video has surfaced online. The incident happened last week outside of a north side gas station. One community activist says it is important to see the reality in some parts of Milwaukee and make sure there is change. 

Near Locust and Teutonia, a woman is punched and kicked by two people while others stand around filming the whole thing. The incident happened last Tuesday, August 18th [2015]. The victim has not come forward and the attackers have not been identified. 

Milwaukee police say they are aware of the video but no official reports have been made. It is unclear the condition of the woman but the video shows she was able to get up after the beating.

In the 1920s and 1930s, black jazz musicians used the verb "to truck" in the Robert Crumb sense of "Keep On Truckin'." You can see an example of it in Disney's 1941 "Dumbo," where one of the crows says "And they tell me that a man made a vegetable truck," and all the others crows assume the Keep on Truckin' position. link

Here's the scene from "Dumbo;" the line occurs at around 58 sec:

The crows do a lot of stereotypical strut and swagger, and I wonder if R Crumb was influenced by this in creating his iconic cartoon? Terry Zwigoff's documentary "Crumb" recorded how the young Crumb brothers were obsessed with at least one Disney movie, "Treasure Island" (1950), and Crumb probably saw Dumbo too as a kid (what boomer didn't?). Also, Crumb showed an early fascination with -- ahem -- African American caricature.

That song dates from 1971. It's from the same album as "Maggie May," but never climbed the charts as high which is a pity because it's a great story. I learned a few new things about it at its Wiki page:

Kenney Jones, the usual Faces drummer did not play drums on the track as I had long assumed -- Micky Waller did. That reminded me of finding out that Kenney Jones played drums on the Stones' It's Only Rock And Roll (But I like It) and not Charlie Watts.

Stewart has dropped some of the more controversial lyrics in subsequent performances. I don't recall people getting upset about them in the 1970's. You'll never hear them if you skip through the song.

Race's Matter*

Melanin Theory is a curious bit of pseudo scientific race theory which asserts the superiority of certain peoples because of their increased melanin content -- you can read some of the crackpot hypotheses at the link, but there's very little in the way of substantive support.

Melanin -- the molecule -- is ubiquitous (except in arachnids) and it comes in three basic flavors (cf. the link above) called eumelanin, pheomelanin, and neuromelanin.  New words for you too?

Cliven Bundy on blacks: ‘Are they better off as slaves?’

"Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher whom some Republicans and tea party activists have rallied around as he fights federal government efforts to restrict the land his cattle can graze on, suggests in a New York Times story that African Americans might be better off as slaves, given their current situation."

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. The call is going out for conservatives to distance themselves from Bundy. I find it interesting that after President Obama has repeatedly called for a national conversation or race, as soon as a citizen is engaged in the race conversation, the conversation is used against him.
I'm not going to defend Bundy, but, (I guess I 'am) we all have been asked to talk about race. And unless there is a school we have to go to learn how to talk about it. I'm not going to condemn a man for being in-artfull, un-nuanced as to the euphemism riddled, ever evolving language of race. Bundy spoke his mind the best he could, which is saying a lot, in the day when exercising free speech by making a donation to the unapproved cause can get you virtually tarred and feather not to mention fired.

Towards Equality and Understanding

The first black president should have been a conservative.

The first female president should be a conservative.

Likewise, the next fiscally conservative President should be a liberal.

We get the most and fastest results towards equality that way because whole stereotypes are destroyed -- things become a "Nixon goes to China" moment.

"Fem" was a southern Wisconsin middle and high school put down when I was growing up there: "Don't be such a fem!" It could have been more widespread -- I still don't know -- does anyone?

The Violent Femmes were from Milwaukee which is just a short drive away from Madison. When I first heard about them I remember thinking "that's a weird spelling of 'fem'."  But it was brilliant: it "frenchified" the spoken word, adding another layer of nuance.

The French first explored Wisconsin, but the Germans, Poles, Italians, Cornish, Norwegians, Swedes, Icelanders, Dutch, Swiss, & Irish, etc., settled the state.  Later on came the African Americans, the Hmong, and the Mexicans. Milwaukee and Chicago were the points of entry for many -- but not every -- family. Mine wandered there from PA much earlier on and never set foot in Milwaukee or Chicago.

Such hegemony...how many native American tribes were in Wisconsin first? My white guilt is for what happened to them.
