Weather's Here - Wish You Were Beautiful

Don't click on the video if you don't care for the song. I put the video up for its cover art start page.

Something weird happened on the WH lawn yesterday. But don't worry, I think Presidents have immunity from the Immolation Clause.

KLEM FM

Overheard at Lem's:
Sixty Grit said...
I watched a couple of epis of GLOW - it was not good. Mercifully I now have wifi and have started watching Justified on Prime TV. Much more in keeping with ne and my people, other than the fact that IT WAS FILMED IN CALI-FREAKIN-FORNIA!!!

A nice mash-up of bluegrass and hip-hop.

KLEM FM

And

Colorado is an inspiring state. I first visited at age 18 on a road trip with a friend. I wrote this then:
7-2-78
Below towering Clark Peak I paused on bridge crossing a swollen melt creek. As I leaned on the rail watching the the water rush swiftly away, I could see in it my life's past moments like a rushing river passing through me and vanishing never to be relived. At that moment I turned about to face the oncoming deluge of foamy water. Here was the future! It was the part of the river flowing from who knows where. I knew I couldn't really get to its source but would have to wait for each wave to pass through and then it would swirl off to someplace just as illusive.
Six years later, I moved there and stayed six years. I left for three years but then came back for three more before leaving for good.

Was Robert Frost An Open Borders Guy?

Mending Wall

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs.  The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
‘Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of outdoor game,
One on a side.  It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.'
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors?  Isn’t it
Where there are cows?  But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I’d ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offense.
Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That wants it down.'  I could say ‘Elves’ to him,
But it’s not elves exactly, and I’d rather
He said it for himself.  I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father’s saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.'

The Great Post-Abortion Debate

This is not about what the title might suggest.

I'm talking about the 20 or so unfinished & unpublished posts still in "draft" stage on Lem's blog. They are invisible to most readers. Some of them are accidental -- a few errant keystrokes led to an unwanted brain child -- the one from Freeman Hunt for example is just a title (titular posts is my tag for that). Others appear quite well along in development -- those from Pastafarian and Michael Haz, and Trooper York for example. There's even one from Darcy. Some of these authors are no longer contributors to Lem's blog. What should become of them?  Of course it's Lems decision, but I wish they'd stop by here and say hello. I'd like to wish them all Happy New Year.

KLEM FM

h/t: April Apple

The video shows old photos from the sugar cane industry in Hawaii. If you've ever been to the Big Island (Hilo in particular) you know how dead that industry is. The real ag-economy is clockwise around the island near Kona where they grow coffee and weed.

I always wondered why Hawaii never became known for quality (or even rot-gut) rum. Does it have to do with the fact that most of the sugar cane was loaded onto ships and processed in California (California & Hawaii, i.e., C&H sugar)?  Certainly there was a hardworking native population to corrupt with drink.

KLEM FM

I think that's a Smokey Robinson song in the background. Our local expert, darcy, could confirm this.

A while back I started wondering when and why it was that rock and roll music lost it's danceability.  See here for example. That was from 1956 when partner dancing was still going strong. Tonight's video purports to be from 1964, ten 8 years after.  I'm closing in on a more exact date.
