One of the things I learned from those lecture discs on ecology was that there was no oxygen on earth in the very beginning. It makes sense. Oxygen destroys. Tears stuff apart. There'd be no complexity.
Anaerobic micro-organisms (autotrophs?) created oxygen as a byproduct of their life functions and subsequent life adapted to make use of the energy liberated by the oxygen and that's where complexity began.
I wish I knew more about astronomy . . . but my brain gets pretty tired pretty fast.
