Da Bears!

I know I have said that I have stopped following the National Felons League. Which I have. I have not seen a game in the last four years. Not even highlights. So I have no idea what is going on except from some websites that I enjoy. One site that has become a go too place for me is "Outkick the Coverage."

One of the recent posts tells me that the Halas family is thinking about selling Da Bears. One of the cornerstone family owned franchises like the Steelers or the Giants they were the only ballast the league had to keep it in line from the new woke ownership that has destroyed the league.

Now Halas's daughter who is about 98 doesn't want to sell and her idiot family wants to dump the team. You know who one of the main competitors for buying this gem? Jeff Bezos of Amazon. Imagine that.

Monopoly Amazon controlling a storied NFL franchise. I don't know how the salary cap works but I bet you can just pay a fine like the Yankees do in baseball. Can he buy a championship with the dough I give him by having an Alexa in every room? That would suck.

The old families and the old ways are passing from the scene. I guess everyone used to say the same thing when they get old. I remember how sad everyone got when Albert Anastasia retired so to speak. Now it is all woke all the time.

Thank God that I don't follow the league anymore along with millions of other conservatives. I hope the rating decline continues and the league loses its big TV contracts. Although with Bezos they might just go to Amazon and we might be forced to watch it if we want to order books for our kindle or tampons or whatever.

It's sick out there and getting sicker.

Big Brother can go F#ck Himself

So the wife decides that since the Echo dot is so cheap we are going to put it all over the house. It is only about thirty bucks so we got a couple. It is basicly the Alexa function that plays music and gives reminders and does all kind of shit. Which means that the government is taping and recording everything I do. Who gives a shit? They already do that. Do you notice that if you look at one thing online you get ads for that in every feed you have. Computer. I phone. I pad. Big brother is already here. So why not relax and enjoy it like Tex Antione said.

I like to go into a room and just say "Alexa play Christmas music."

I know I am already on all of their lists so it just doesn't matter anymore.

Amazonia

We have been getting a lot of rainfall lately, we have had flash flood warnings and watches every day for weeks now. We had thunderstorms for five hours yesterday, one right after the other. The lightning strikes were so close I didn't even work in my shop until that train of storms passed over. A river now runs through my yard and down my driveway. My front yard is becoming a swamp. My trees now live in a rain forest. What I am trying to say is:

Thanks to a friend of mine for that meme. He's a funny guy.

I did manage to build a box the other night:

Looks like a hunk of wood. But wait:

Lift the lid and there you go. Red mulberry natural edge top and red mulberry block for the body. I am not real big on joinery around here but since boxes sell I figured I would make one that matched my particular inclinations - simple, natural, functional, and made out of local wood.

But that's not what I am here to talk about. Nope, as always, there is more to the story. Years ago I read an excerpt from Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I found those few paragraphs fascinating - chocked full of detail and written in a manner that reminded me of Tom Wolfe - very energetic and fast paced. So once I got my new Kindle I looked for that book, but at 9 bucks, no thanks, I'll save my money and I passed it by. Then I espied another book by Stephenson entitled Snow Crash for $1.99. I bought it. And next thing you know, before I have even made it halfway through the latter book I got an email from the racket boys over at Amazon. They are mind readers, you know, and they offered me Cryptonomicon for $2.99. They know that I am cheap. That my resistance to buying that book prior to receiving their new offer was totally based on the price point. Being clever money grubbing, er, business geniuses they figured that out and knew that if they dipped that bait in the water I would bite. Like a freakin' piranha. Nom nom nom. They reeled me in. So far I am not disappointed. That boy can write. Which brings us to something else - so there I was readin' the book, relaxin', and on page - aw hell, Kindle does not number its pages, but at 1% of the way through the book I was stopped dead in my tracks. There, bigger than life was the name John Vincent Atanasoff, listed as a Bulgarian working at Iowa state. I read the name and had to close the book. I knew J. V., knew his brother Theo, his sister-in-law Lily, his nieces and nephews, one of whom was best man at my wedding. He was a patient of my father. He lived right outside of town in a house that he designed and built - it was, I guess, in the brutalist school of architecture - poured concrete walls, no ornamentation, brutal in a word. Fortress-like.

John Atanasoff
That's five syllables right there
What else can you do?

But enough about that - that is borderline gossip. I will resume reading the book and reminisce about times gone by some other time. But damn, bam, that is an odd thing to encounter in a book, just sayin'.

Monopoly news.......hello...hello.....Amazon....pay attention.

Rite Aid to sell 865 stores to save Walgreens deal

New York Post By Reuters December 20, 2016

Rite Aid will sell 865 stores to Fred’s for $950 million to satisfy antitrust concerns over its proposed takeover by Walgreens Boots Alliance, the companies said Tuesday.
The $9.4 billion deal between the No. 1 and No. 3 drugstore chains in the US had been caught up in a Federal Trade Commission antitrust review.
The regulator had pressed for the sale of more than 500 stores to an independent chain — but finding such a buyer proved difficult.
Rite Aid and Walgreens were widely expected to divest stores in states where the combined company would have a particularly strong position.
Walgreens has 13,200 stores, nearly 60 percent of which are in the US, while Rite Aid has 4,570 stores in the US.

Harry Bosch.....rocking good yarn.

I just finished season Two of Harry Bosch which is an Amazon original series. Amazon has started producing it's own content in much the same way as Netflicks. This is the second season of the dramatization of some of the novels of Michael Connelly featuring LA homicide Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch. Season One was excellent and the second season keeps up the standard. Great production values and a gritty LA milieu add up to superior entertainment.

The key element to Harry's pysche is that his Mom was a prostitute who was murdered when he was a kid. Something he shares with real life author James Ellroy who is the definitive LA nior writer. I don't know if Connelly stole his life story but he got a lot of mileage out of it. Twenty excellent novels that will leave Amazon a lot of room to develop new series.

Amazon Prime is a great deal. For a nominal fee you get expedited shipping and tons of free streaming video. I heartily recommend it as well as this excellent detective series.

If you are doing any cyber Monday shopping today, please consider using the Amazon porter on this website.

We haven't picked up much use lately. But, that is probably because I haven't given the portal the promotion it sorely needs.

Please use our Amazon portal and you will be contributing to the blog at no extra cost to you.

"Ex–Top Gear Trio Will Make a Car Show for Amazon Prime"

"Alongside fellow ex–Top Gear hosts James May and Richard Hammond, the irascible [Jeremy Clarkson, formerly of the BBC's Top Gear series, aka "The Anti-Scold"]  has signed on to host a new automotive series on Amazon Prime, which will start streaming sometime next year. It’s a savvy move, contractually: The non-compete clause in the trio’s old BBC contract apparently only forbade them from signing with a competing British channel for two years, and said absolutely nothing about working with the content-producing arm of an American logistics company."

Via Instapundit who says...
I wonder if any BBC subscribers will weigh what they’re getting for their mandatory license fees versus what’s included for voluntarily signing up with Amazon Prime or Netflix?

Yankee North vs Rebel South

Civil War chess set on Amazon, one of over a dozen available at various price points even so high as thousands of dollars, but not through Prime, only two regular common Civil War sets, and nothing about them actually collectable.

Here is their most popular available through Prime, just $60.00 and it is rated 4 stars.

One is a bit classy and the other a bit garish. Man, what a tough decision.

That's all you're having through Prime.

But there are still plenty others, pewter marked down to $197.00 from $235.00, extra large chessmen 4.5 inches tall. Only $150.00 and 5 stars reviews. I would get this one.

Because bigger is always better.

The Italians will sell you a set with its own table for $3,375.00, or a large set with high gloss marble-looking blue and tan board for $1,225.00.  Koehler Group will sell you a set for $8,183.00 but it is unclear on Amazon what makes it worth that much. Made out of glass. Nobody's reviewed it because nobody bought it, most likely.

On the results page Amazon finds fit to show me 150th anniversary USPS forever stamps, novelty Civil War currency. Four good solid pages of chess set results, the rest peters out to books.

And the whole time I'm imagining people actually playing these games. I have such a chess set of medieval knights and castles for rooks, knights on horses, people as bishops that never gets played. Not even once. They're plastic and unweighted. Not fun to handle. And I realized, who'd want to play Civil War chess when you know in advance which side wins every time?

The Hennigans were southern as possible. They used to joke about me being yankee with my strange yankee ways even though none of us identified with any north/south differences. It was funny. Gary could not care less about the Civil War, race relations, all the things projected onto southerners Gary is utterly devoid, but he does love his region and with good reason. So it's doubly funny when he deigns to wallow in southern resentment and purposefully get everything wrong. He's being funny. He'd raise his fist and shake his voice in exaggerated southern accent, "The North will r-i-i-i-i-i-s-e again!"

Lightning fast

Yesterday I handed an Amazon free-return package to a UPS driver just before 5:00 PM. I see this morning that by 6:24 PM Amazon had issued a refund. So relying just on receiving the scanned label information, they played the odds I was returning an item in appropriate condition, or that I was returning it at all. Or more likely, they know I have a reliable return history.

I have wondered how efficient the new distribution scheme is, in the long run. Are the trucks like red blood cells coursing through the body delivering oxygen exactly where needed? And if taken to the extreme of having no retail stores at all, would maximal energy efficiency be reached?  It's all very convenient, I must say. Of course there is a lot to be said for drifting through a department store, looking and comparing.

I have ordered two very similar hanging toiletry bags which look like they may have been made by the same company, but one is duded up with zipper tassels and a maker label. The $16 one has free returns, the $11 one I can give away if it does not work out. I want to find out if the cheaper one has elastic bands across the back of the large compartment, and how much I mind that the more expensive one has a black interior. As you may have surmised by now, my personality profile is FN.

Included in the price are thousands of Audible audio books.

Awake in the Night Land

I heard a rumor this collection of novellas by John C. Wright was going to be FREE tomorrow...

It looks like something my husband would probably like.  Me? Maybe not so much.

"AWAKE IN THE NIGHT LAND is an epic collection of four of John C. Wright's brilliant forays into the dark fantasy world of William Hope Hodgson's 1912 novel, The Night Land. Part novel, part anthology, the book consists of four related novellas, "Awake in the Night", "The Cry of the Night-Hound", "Silence of the Night", and "The Last of All Suns", which collectively tell the haunting tale of the Last Redoubt of Man and the end of the human race."

UPDATE:  That information is wrong... the FREE book is only the first novella in that collection.
