A few weeks ago I was driving home from my night classes and discovered that modest little "Molly's", a bar along my route, had been transformed into "The Last Supper Bar and Grill". Big neon sign and a string of lights that no little bar could ever afford. I'm told that Molly believed that men should go home to their families so that the bar has always closed by 9pm, so filming later seems like a great way to make some extra cash. Good on Molly's.
The location signs on the road all say "EYE" (Breaking Bad was "Br/Ba" as chem symbols)... so I had wondered what EYE was supposed to stand for. Turns out it's a CW television show called "The Messengers."
It sounds completely horrible.
I might have to watch it, though, to see if I catch the scenes they shoot at Molly's.

If I wanna watch "shot local" I have to turn 1950's "Zorro" TV, "Top Gun" or "Veronica Mars."
In Plain Sight was shot here, too. I watched an episode or two. The one I saw had the witness protection guy set up a Pet Store... I recognized the pet store and mentioned it to them when I went in there one day.
What was weird though was that there was a scene where the main marshal lady ran out the front door and around a corner to intercept the guy before he could kill his "girlfriend"... and the tension of the scene was ruined *completely* by the fact that I knew what was out the door and around the corner and That Wasn't It. :)
So... it's fun to see local stuff... but jarring, too.
Actually... I shouldn't dis' the CW. They put the "mindless" back in "mindless entertainment"... and I'm not saying that like it's a BAD thing!
Lem, I have some Jet's fans who live in north Jersey, coming out for the game this weekend in Green Bay. We visited them right after my epic visit w/ Trooper. They took us on a quick tour of Sopranos location. The Mercedes dealership of his fatal attraction. The beauty shop where Junior's cunnilingus loving girlfriend spilled the beans, and a couple others.
We're watching an HBO Series The Leftovers. It is a very dark theme of a sorta Rapture light, where 10% of all people disappear. Lot's of religious issues. Father Fox might find it interesting.

Same for New Orleans, too. It's really jarring the way they splice scenes from all over town for a single shot. "Course, unless one is a local denizen, the national audience will never know, right? :)
(PS: Overheard on the Washington St bus one night (the street that divides Venice from Marina del Rey--goes right down to the beach):
"I've lived in Sydney, Vancouver, and here and it's fascinating how many places I recognize from films & TV shot in those locations.."
Bodega California and Bodega Beach are two places separated by about 6 miles - the kids in The Birds run out of the schoolhouse in the first, turn the corner - there they are in the second. Hollywood magic.
Spinner - did you see Satriale's in Kerner? Or the Bada Bing? How about that bridge over the gorge - you know, where people either did what was asked of them or went swimming.
How about Sil's hair - was that wig on the tour? It should have its own museum.

In the classic opening of the Sopranos in which Tony drives through the North Jersey landscape, that's all authentic, no false storefronts for the TV show. Also the only shot of the Manhattan skyline shows the Empire State Building not the Twin Towers, so no change in that shot. Going across that girder bridge over Secaucus, whew what a smell. Used to be from pig farms. Not sure if the pig farms are still there but something else is still rising above Secaucus. Pungent Joisey.
Sixty, No to all those locations. This was just an impromptu trip to more obscure locations on the way out to dinner and near where these folks live in Rockaway. I'll ask my bride, there were a couple more spots they pointed out.
I remember Mike Palmieri throwing a drug dealer off that bridge. The guy who sold drugs to the grandson of Juniors tailor.
I was very late to watching The Sopranos. Rented it from NetFlix and watched it from beginning to end over the course of months.
I still remember the really, really weird emotion I felt about halfway through the first episode.
Something along the lines of "Oh Shit! I think I might love this even more than Mad Men."
I felt kind of ashamed of myself like I was about to feel thrilled with myself for committing adultery.
As far as that reason for closing at 9:00 p.m. goes, color me skeptical.
I donno, Eric. I've never been in there. A friend's husband was in a band, though, and when they played there they brought their kid along. She's the one who told me the story.
