Medical News Today: "Alcohol does not benefit the heart, claims new study"

"The 155 researchers - from the UK, continental Europe, North America, and Australia - pooled and analyzed data about links between drinking habits and heart health from 56 epidemiological studies covering more than 260,000 people of European descent."
They found that people with a particular gene consumed 17% less alcohol per week, were less likely to binge drink, and were more likely to abstain from alcohol altogether, than non- carriers.

These lower alcohol consumers typically had a 10% average reduced risk of coronary heart disease, lower blood pressure and a lower body mass index (BMI). (read more)

So much for hope.

Oh, what do they know.

First the 'scientists' tell us butter is bad and we should use margarine. Now they have changed their minds. Same thing with coffee...bad...now good. High carbs....good....nope now it is bad and we should eat more protein. Eggs are going to kill us....um....wait...they are good for us.

They don't know what they are talking about and have done more harm than good by making all these pronouncements about what we should eat and drink.

Ignore them.

Everything in moderation. Drink some beer. Have a glass of wine or two. Have a cocktail once in a while. Eat a steak occasionally. Life is too short to be constantly worried about the little stuff. Enjoy.

I'm afraid of breast cancer. Molly Ivins, bless her dear, sweet, good-natured heart, and her radiant smile, was an alcoholic. She died of an especially aggressive type of cancer, inflammatory breast cancer.

RIGHT ON, DBQ. I hope you will take this as the compliment it is meant to be; when I see the Barefoot Contessa, I think of you.

The Dude said...

She was a commie _and_ a drunk? Never saw that coming!

MI, that is.

DBQ/Sofia Loren - long may they both live.

The Dude said...

Shame on me - the Barefoot Contessa was Ava Gardner, not Sofia Loren.

I must need a drink or three.

Eff you, Sixty re Ivins. I meant the TV cook.

Did they also mention that the non-drinkers were bored out of their gourds? Which is a form of suffering. Which leads to CANCER! Alright, I made that up...but it could...boredom could lead to cancer...or hang-gliding...which cou....

The Dude said...

Are they not one and the same? Don't tell me there was more than one drunken commie with that name. That is too horrible to contemplate.

deborah said...

FUCKING A, RICPIC!

(You never complimented my nut sack poem for you :(

One man's Mendelian randomization is another man's bullshit.

What they found was that white people with the "I can't drink" gene have slightly lower incidences of certain heart related problems than people without that gene.

They then applied advanced statistical methods to eliminate confounding factors and get a "suggested" result that justified the expense of the study.

Science isn't dead yet but it is severely ill and money is the disease that is killing it.

ricpic said...

Didn't read it. What thread is your heh heh Nut Sack poem on or in?

deborah said...

Okay, Sixty, I'm gonna give you a pass on that. 'Cause you're old.

You know, there are centrists in both parties who see what's what?

I asked Darcila to forward me pics of your wood working/art, but she hasn't located them yet...please send them to me.

deborah said...

People, help me, what thread was the ricpic nutsack poem in?

deborah said...

Rabel, you are astute.

It's funny how things can change in the world of politically correctness.

We have been watching this silly little show called the "Hart of Dixie" from the Country Channel.

The mayor is an ex-nfl player called Lavon Hayes who is obviously modeled on someone like Lawrence Taylor. His ex-girlfriend played by Golden Brooks (not the old Cowboy receiver) who is a very attractive black woman. She decides to run against him for mayor and they end up having dueling barbecues to get voters. She promotes it by saying she is having a famous TV chef who is a good friend of hers cater the event. Guess who that celebrity chef was?

Paula Dean.

Now that shits funny.

@ Deborah

I do like being compared to Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten). I love her show. Her laid back way of cooking. Interesting dinner parties, luncheons. Big envy for her garden and fabulous kitchen.

Entertaining is fun. Cooking is fun. Eating and drinking is FUN (and necessary try living without it). Don't let the food nazis suck all the enjoyment out of life.

I don't worry about cancer in what I eat or drink because, as I said....moderation. Plus certain cancers are just genetic and it doesn't matter what you do. You are susceptible. In addition if you are a tobacco user (which I am not), your odds of getting illness are increased.

Right now, I'm planning a Dim Sum party for my friends who have never had Dim Sum. Some of the ingredients I have to order on line. Just not available here. Like non glutenous wheat flour and tapioca starch. Har Gow. (which I love but have never made) Shui Mai. Bao. Seasoned chicken wings.

If ChipAhoy has any tips on this I would love it.

So I was wrong twice about the Barefoot Contessa.

That is still not enough to induce me to watch more cooking shows and fewer old movies, however. I really want to see "Ieri, oggi, domani" again - Sofia was amazing in that.

"Alcohol does not benefit the heart, claims new study."

That's way too cramped a definition of "heart" they've got going there.

DBQ, she's how I want to be, cool and breezy.

Why do you disrupt my belief that drinks are good for me?

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

DBQ: Instead of the Barefoot Contessa, you could model yourself on this cooking show...

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Well, except for high heels, bouffant hair and long nails, and acccent I've pretty much got it going. LOL..

Love her red fridge.

Seared tuna....mmmm mmmm mmmm.

What I did not dig was the cut away cow, the hamburgers, or the beef and beet stew!

Personally I prefer this cooking show to most others, but then I suppose I would.
