Music that speaks to me? After thinking about it a bit, I arrived at 3 songs that cover it...and one is in my Blogger profile. Songs & Music to speak to me has to have a "hook" to something personal to me, something in my life, that reflects my philosophy. Here's the 3...
1.) A Gaelic Song cited in my "profile" with explanation. The translation is below the video.
2.) Miquel Rios' A Song of Joy sung to an adaptation of Beethoven's 9th. His 1969 album had English on one side and Spanish on the other...I heard it in Spanish first, because it was a Puerto Rican GI who had it.
I have an aversion to Alanis. It seems like she's always bitching. I just feel the need to show her the door and ask her to forget she ever knew me. I'd be paying guys to take her out, with a bonus if she falls in love with you. Call it "combat pay".
I'm more the kind of guy who loves him a little "Having My Baby", or "Muskrat Love" covered by Insane Clown Posse.
The song by Little Feat "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" has always figured in my life. The lyrics are just about driving a truck and don't say much, but every time I find myself in a scary situation, I hear myself sing that title phrase, and it always gives me courage or a reasonable facsimile of it.
re Alanis, Bags, I'm surprised it got to the seventh post before anyone complained about her. I liked her a lot at first, but yeah, she can wear on you.
April, Ironic is a pretty good song, but she sings it too stridently. The first time I saw the video it blew me away because it reminded me so much of me and my two sisters running around in our parents' big car. How many of us did that in the seventies. Our parents just letting us get into these massive vehicle and drive willy-nilly where we wanted LOL.
Just noticed that the Miquel Rios video link I set says the "original" was in 1970...sorry, that's BS, the original album was 1969 and I heard it in a small village near Dongducheon, South Korea, in 19-f'ing-69. If you check the album, studio produced, it is dated 1969. I still have the copy I bought later in the Seoul PX. The Puerto Rican kid had a big stereo set up in a permanent barracks...I had nothing, no place to keep such stuff, so I didn't get to play my copy until late 1970 when I lived in the KN civilian population (Bupyong) and had a bit of room. Damn sure had no place or time in Chu Lai RVN & the shit-holes west there from, in late 69 & early 70.
Thanks Deb, for the song. That's the iconic Alanis: "It's not fair to remind me of the cross I bear"
Just put it down, the same way you picked it up _ voluntarily, because you wanted it.
That song makes me believe there is no lasting happy with that girl. She sacrifices every day to love. Well, thanks, I really appreciate your selfless love, sweetheart. I'm just not worthy.
Deb -I didn't care for her when she first hit the music scene. The song "you oughta know" was, eh, not to my liking. I found the lyrics annoying and her voice grating. After other songs on JLP album came out, I changed my opinion of her. I thought the writing on JLP was clever. Esp songs like Ironic and One Hand in my Pocket.
I don't have an anthem or any particular song that says - this is me. There are parts of songs that inspire me and songs make me laugh. Plenty of favorite songs. By the time I find the right one this post will have sunk into the oblivion. I think Deborah's choice is a good one. I'm sad but I'm laughing I'm brave but I'm chickenshit I'm sick but I'm pretty baby

Is there a song that especially speaks to you?
No. Not at all. Not even close. My individuality is precious to me and I guard it jealously.
But I admire people who can answer "yes" to that question same as I admire people who can say that they have a favorite color.
I've been playing a lot with young people the last few months.
The Old Dawgz' repertoire stops at about 1973, with a few stray excursions into the 80s.
The kids play some of the old stuff, but they get into the 80s and 90s, too.
So, what I'm saying is, I'm trying to listen seriously to the kids' music.
Kids in this case equals mid-30s. What can I say? I'm an Old Dawg.
The music that really says something to me is still the basics, and it's all simple boy/girl stuff.
I don't care for intellectual stuff in music, although I play anything that I get paid to play.
Hey Good Lookin' is my idea of a great anthem.
Hey Good Lookin' covers all the important topics... pretty girls, picnics, hot cars, etc.
If there was one song that speaks to me, it would have to be this song.
Personal anthem for me is more like her song "ironic".

When I was a kid, I identified with that song "Sign, Sign, everywhere a sign."
I'm getting that all over again.
Just leave me the fuck alone. I don't need even one more rule to follow. Not one.
Different songs speak to me on a daily basis. "Sleepwalker" by The Kinks clamored for attention today.
I thought about sharing my top ten most played songs from my iTunes but then thought why bother?

@bagoh20: "Dixie Chicken" is my favorite Little Feat song -- but far from an overall favorite song.

@Thanks deborah. I had forgotten how well Morrisette had lyrically presaged every recent Adele hit.

Yes, I am a pedantic dick!

Life has a funny way of helping you out.
Alanis has been my guilty pleasure; my wife thinks she whines.
"That I Would Be Good" is lovely.
My anthem?
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding
My current anthem:
Fare Thee Well, from the film Inside Llewyn Davis.
I don't have an anthem or any particular song that says - this is me.

I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chickenshit
I'm sick but I'm pretty baby
Everybody got problems
Buddy, I got mine
When midnight comes around
I start to lose my mind
When the sun
Puts out the light
I join the creatures
Of the night, oh yeah
Troubles with insomnia, Chickie?
How did I miss out on the sign song?
lol Pogo is an Alanis groupie :)
Haz, love me some Seger...I hadn't heard that one.
Thanks everyone for sharing!
"How did I miss out on the sign song?"
The odds must be astronomical!
Here's my hopeful anthem.
Lord Huron
Ends of the Earth
Oh, there's a river that winds on forever
I'm gonna see where it leads
Oh, there's a mountain that no man has mounted
I'm gonna stand on the peak
Out there's a land that time don't command
Wanna be the first to arrive
No time for ponderin' why I'm-a wanderin'
on while were both still alive.
Thanks, April, that's a good song. I've been meaning to look up its title when I hear it on a car commercial.
You're welcome, Deborah. I discovered the LH album and I'd say for 2013 - it's my favorite. I just love it.
Lord Huron
They made mini-movie videos for some of their songs. I wish they'd make more.
Time to run...
I'd wish they would make "She lit a fire" into a full George Ranger Johnson creation.
Dead thread blues. Although I'm not a fan of this band, this song remains in the rotation in my brain. I wonder why certain songs do that?
Wow, thanks for the LH album link. Makes you think of severe copyright infringement. I've bookmarked it for future listening.
