"7 Totally Epic Rules For Writing on the Internet"

"Rule number 6 is so incredibly true, it hurts."

6. Recognize that your career depends on people like Miley Cyrus moving their rear-ends in ways that give you an opportunity to engage in criticism and commentary regarding the relative benefits of their gyrations. Pay dutiful homage to all such rear-ends.

For the 6 un-copied rules link , and, for my personal favorite ...

Never compromise excellence. To write for someone else is the biggest mistake that any writer makes. You should be your biggest competitor, your biggest critic, your biggest fan, because you don’t know what anybody else thinks. How arrogant it is to assume that you know the market, that you know what’s popular today – only Steven Spielberg knows what’s popular today. Only Steven Spielberg will ever know what’s popular. So leave it to him. He’s the only one in the history of man who has ever figured that out. Write what you want to see. Because if you don’t, you’re not going to have any true passion in it, and it’s not going to be done with any true artistry.

The writing part is easy. How do you get somebody to read your shit?

- BS about racism
- BS about politics
- BS about sexism
- BS about the homophobes

Now, prepare for the onslaught!

If you looked at what gets the lion's share of page views, you might just consider this internet thing a complete wasteland, which it is, but there is treasure buried in the desert, you just have to dig. It's amazing how much stuff is buried out there and how rich it is.

I read two stories yesterday that sent a point of wisdom home to me.

1) The couple who found the millions of dollars worth of rare coins buried in their yard. They will have to pay about half the value in taxes, which forces them to raise the money by selling what they found. They owned them all along with everything else on the property since they first bought it, but now suddenly they owe millions, even though they have realized no benefit until they sell them, just like the rest of the property.

2) The couple who found a backpack full of meth making stuff and turned it into the cops. Even though they found it 15 miles from their home, and they did the "right thing", their home is now listed with the FBI as a meth lab, and they can't get it de-listed.

The wisdom? Do not contact your government for any reason unless absolutely necessary, and then still try to find another way. I'd rather call the Mexican mafia for help. At least they are competent.

So what could go wrong with giving them access to all my health care info?

With regard chick's 11:27 post, I think you do have to have an audience in mind.

I think you do have to have an audience in mind.

Though not clear which "you" was in mind, this audience member doesn't agree with that statement.

Why not write from the true self and see what shows up?

From my POV, most of Chip A's posts appear to have no specific audience in mind, other than himself and whatever other might happen to wander by; they also appear to involve enough true passion and true artistry to snag an eyeball or two. Some of Palladian's have had a similar flavor, and several of chickenlittle's intriguing and/or scientific offerings have rolled out of the hatchery with nary a buyer in sight!

When too much "audience in mind", enters the picture, the writing starts to emit a whiff of manipulation rather than open invitation.
