Frustrated, armed with ropes, activist group plans to pull down Andrew Jackson Monument.

A New Orleans activist group is threatening to pull down the city's most recognizable statue in response to what members claim are unreasonable delays in removing four other monuments honoring Confederate leaders and a 19th century white supremacist militia.

Take 'Em Down NOLA says it will attempt to topple the statue of Andrew Jackson during a protest later this month in Jackson Square. Legal delays have kept the other statues -- honoring Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard, and a militia known as the White League -- standing nine months after the City Council authorized their removal.  

"We're going to go to Jackson Square. We're going to put ropes around Andrew Jackson and we're going to take him down off his pedestal," Take 'Em Down organizer and longtime civil rights activist Malcolm Suber said during a forum the group held Thursday.

The demonstration, scheduled for Sept. 24, will come a few days before judges on the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals are scheduled to hear arguments over whether to lift an order that halted the removal of the monuments.

"The key is we're not going to wait," Take 'Em Down organizer Angela Kinlaw said. "The city has taken plenty of time to make a decision. But the people are ready to move."

Webb drops from Dem race, considers run as Independent

""[Said Webb,] The Democratic Party is heavily invested in interest-group politics," he said, and that could exclude groups it means to include, responding to a question about his reluctance to embrace the Black Lives Matter movement and to call on the removal of the Confederate flag from federal grounds.

In an email to reporters on Monday evening, Webb's campaign said that he is considering running as an independent.

But on Tuesday, he said only that he was considering the possibility. "We intend to spend the next couple of weeks talking to people," he said. "People I have not felt comfortable talking with as a Democratic candidate, but a number of people who have reached out over the past year who have encouraged me to run."

Webb said he “would have significant financial help” if he ran as independent, based on what people have told him.

He also said he believed he could beat Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a general election. “If we ran an independent race that worked and got traction, I honestly could see us beating both of them.""

Maryland got the okay from a judge to recall Confederate flag special license plates, joining Virginia -- where a similar recall effort has encountered near universal defiance from owners of the tags to return them.

Both states acted to recall the plates after a self-proclaimed white supremacist killed nine black South Carolina churchgoers in June. The gunman had taken photos of himself with guns and the Confederate flag and posted them online before the shooting.

A federal judge issued an order Thursday allowing Maryland to recall tags featuring the Confederate battle flag after Nov. 17, Reuters reported.

“I look forward to the day when these plates are no longer on the road,” Maryland Attorney General Brian Frost said in a statement. “This flag is a painful symbol that divides us, conjuring images of hate and subjugation. It has no place in any contemporary government use.”

A judge ruled in 1997 that Maryland’s Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates were protected free speech and enjoined the state from recalling them, Reuters reported.

But in June, the U.S. Supreme Court said Confederate flag license plates constituted government speech that could be subjected to regulation.

Virginia announced it would recall the plates in August and as of Oct. 4 it is illegal to drive with Confederate license plates. Violators face prosecution on a misdemeanor if stopped.

But the recall has encountered little cooperation, according to wavy-tv.

Of 1,600 Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates on the road, only 187 have been returned, the station reported Thursday.

Kevin Collier told the station he is refusing to give up his plates. He is the commander of the Stonewall Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and his great-great-great grandfather fought with the Confederacy.

“I can’t fight on the battlefield like they did, but I can fight however I can in modern times and I will not give them plates up,” he said.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles asked the Sons of Confederate Veterans to help design a new plate but the organization did not respond.

“Next thing you know, they’re going to say you can’t wear blue on Monday, you know, or you can’t wear yellow on Thursday,” Collier told WAVY. “Where’s it going to end?”

“Officers on scene were given conflicting statements as to what led up to the confrontation.”

Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner said members of the “Respect the Flag” group violated the state’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and made terroristic threats when their caravan of vehicles bearing the rebel flag drove past a neighborhood party.

“We do want to say that we respect the rights of all citizens to exercise their First Amendment right, but we’re going to require them when they’re doing that to respect the right of all of the citizens to feel safe,” Fortner said at a news conference attended by FOX5.

The indictment, handed up on Friday, also charges two members of the group with battery for a separate incident that occurred at a gas station on the same day. While video of the Confederate convoy has made its way onto social media, there are two drastically different depictions of what occurred on July 25, with each side blaming the other for generating hostility.

This much is not in dispute: numerous pickup trucks, adorned with several large American and Confederate flags, formed a caravan and drove into a neighborhood where a birthday party was being held for a child.

Black Lives Matter?

Anthony Hervey a black man who supports the use of the Confederate Flag was run off the road and died in a car accident on Sunday July 19th.

According to a story in the New York Post:" A passenger in Hervey’s car, Arlene Barnum, tells The Associated Press that Hervey swerved and crashed after another vehicle carrying four or five young black men pulled up alongside them, yelling and looking angry. Barnum said Hervey yelled something back at the other vehicle before losing control and crashing.

“It spun like crazy and we flipped, flipped, flipped. It was awful,” she said."

No further information is forthcoming at this time from the police as it seems likely that are going to cover it up. It has not be categorized as a crime let alone a hate crime. The Justice Department is not investigating. The Cable networks and the New York Times have not covered this incident. Nobody is saying nuthin.

In the meantime the NAACP is forging ahead with it's plans to destroy the Confederate Monument at Stones Mountain on the grounds that taxpayers money should not be spent on maintaining a symbol of "oppression." The fact that is maintained by private funds does not seem to have penetrated the skulls of these mental giants who didn't want to deploy troops to Guam because they were afraid the island would tip over.

I guess Anthony Hervey's life doesn't matter all that much. After they sandblast off his remains from the side of the highway.

As a black Republican woman, from the South, I find it morally repugnant that 150 years after the Civil War ended, 21st-century Republicans are still defending slavery. Because that’s exactly what supporting South Carolina’s or any state’s right to fly the battle flag means. The Civil War began because Southern states seceded from the Union, refusing to abandon their slave economy of whites using and abusing their free black human labor, owned as property.

Slavery in America, which lasted far longer than in Britain, was an abomination. So why did the Republican Party, which is in desperate need of minority voters, not come out in fierce opposition to the flag two weeks ago, when the topic erupted?

Many Blacks fly the Confederate flag in South Carolina. This author claims to be a conservative but in reality she is not. That flag in 21st century America does not represent racism for most of those who fly it. It represents pride in an era of American history which no longer exists. Nothing more. Should we dump the Union Jack because it flew over an Empire which abused half of the word's population in the name of Rule Britannia? Of course not. This whole "dust up" in the States is the way Radical Liberals punish Southern Conservatives for having the audacity to be the location of a "lone wolf" racist murderer of church goers. It is all about the Radical Left sticking it to the Conservatives. Nothing more. Britons should not allow ourselves to be pulled into this foreign bit of nonsense.

"Many Blacks fly the Confederate flag in South Carolina." Citation needed. Extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof. I'm from South Carolina. 30% of the population is black and I have never once seen a black person fly the battle flag. And finding one somewhere suffering from Stockholm Syndrome does not *many* make.

CHESTER, Va. — Hundreds gathered Saturday in freshly cleared woods along Interstate 95 to celebrate the raising of a Confederate battle flag, an event that stirred strong opposition from those who view the flag as a symbol of division.

Those who attended the raising of the 15-by-15-foot flag from the Army of Northern Virginia said the ceremony was not intended to offend, but to honor the South’s war dead in the Civil War.

“The reason why we’re here is to honor the soldier,” said James Thompson, 50, a North Carolinian now living in Richmond. “We don’t see it as a slavery issue.”

Like many who attended, Thompson said his ancestors fought for the South. A Civil War re-enactor, he wore a slouch hat and a rough wool uniform and carried an Enfield rifle.
