Sunday Morning With Van Morrison

There'll Be Days Like This, written by Van Morrison and part of his twenty-third album, called Days Like This.  You'll hear Brian Kennedy's excellent vocals behind Morrison's lead, sounding almost like a tenor sax.

Bonus! Lyrics we can understand!

Have a blessed Sunday, enjoy the brunch Lem has provided, and the floor is now open for conversation.

Last night's film appreciation movie was Shadow of a Doubt (1943). It was quite watchable, but I found it difficult to reconcile what may or may not have been cinematic conventions, either specific to the period or perhaps to the director.

Did people back in those days really dress like that for dinner. Did they really have those manners? Did bank tellers really have that kind of money? I sort of picked up on the idea that the female protagonist was somewhat exceptional in her . . . in her . . . eh, intelligence? I was going to say "non-servility" but that's not quite right nor can I say what is. Was she some sort of proto-feminist character? Beats me.

Some things stuck out like a sore thumb. Giving a stolen ring to someone that has the old personalized engravings in it? Come on. Or when she runs into the garage full of auto exhaust to have the door seal her inside. Not likely. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out how she overpowered the guy on the train. Whatever.

The comic relief thing with the two guys pretending to scheme to murder one another might have been charmingly eccentric in another time and place. Me? I was sort of hoping for Jar-Jar Binks.

@ April

You guys are going to be freezing and maybe get snow. Meanwhile it is in the mid 70's during the day and does dip into freezing at night. We can still sit outside in the afternoon and have a glass of wine and read a chapter of a book in the warm afternoon sun. Unseasonably warm! No rain! No snow pack in the mountains! We are dying for some some moisture. We would love to see a big snow storm dump feet of snow on us.

I never thought I would be jealous of a polar vortex. :-)

The commercial iconography of our youth is no longer relevant.

This is a tough time of year for me. I used think seasonal affective disorder was horseshit. But, I have it. This year I am dealing w/ it sans meds so far. I have stepped up my walking to 8-10 miles daily. That's easy in good weather but tough in the cold and wind. So, I have to also used the treadmill to supplement. SAD is primarily about the loss of light. But, when I get to San Diego the weight lifts. We have a 10 day trip to Mexico in December which will also help. We are body mind and spirit. I see people in my life out of balance. It's almost always being too low in body or spirit. The women in my family and friend circle seem to be strong in spirit but low in body. Walking has changed my life. It could change yours. I started back in the 90's where a mile was tough. Just start doing it. You will gradually increase the distance. And THEN, you will get to the point where you WANT to walk and you MISS it if you don't. It's autopilot from there.

Well, don't be too jealous. As far as I can tell, it's more cold that moisture. That said, our mountains tend to get more even when we get nothing. We know how important snow pack is.

I'd be ecstatic to send moisture your CA way, DBQ. If only I had that kind of power. I'm full of hotair, but not that much ;)

Rub it in, why don't chooo.

Actually, today here is mid 70's. Our dip into the freezerbox hits on Monday. The upper Mid and mid west will be brutal cold. Sorry, guys.

@ Nick

I agree on the SADs syndrome. I hate hate hate the early sunsets and really hate daylight savings time. Fortunately as a self employed person and now retired from my office job, I get up when I damned well feel like it no matter what the clock says.

To combat the lack of light I spend as much time outside as I can soaking up the sun working in the yard or just sitting and basking in the sun. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) the warm sunny cloudless days have been great for this. Next week, about Wednesday according to the Wundergound web site...we are getting the edge of the polar vortex and it will hopefully be colder and cloudy with a chance of rain and maybe blessed snow!!!

@ Chick. Mt Shasta does have some snow on it....finally! Not enough though and we need more snow at the lower elevations 5000 ft or so. It was quite shocking this summer. The mountain was essentially naked with only a few spots where the glaciers still were hanging on.

Great song, Haz, thanks.

Nick, I'm considering changes (always am :) I'm thinking KISS.

Meat and water vegetables* all month.

One day of the month, desserts, breads, etc., ritualistic, reminiscent of communion.

Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Days, go crazy. Also Christmas Eve and day after Thanksgiving.

Alcohol one day per month, ritualistic, etc.

One cup coffee in morning, per Haz's list

Multi vitamin, extra C, extra D

Walking and bike riding.

*water vegetables: green beans, carrots, cukes, lettuces, etc.

starch vegs: limas, peas, corn, potatoes, etc.

This song was on the "Day's Like This" which was composed by Van the Man when he was in the midst of problems with his girlfriend Michelle Rocca. Featured as a model on both "Day's Like This" and "No Prima Donna" a tribute album where various stars like Snied O'Conner and Elvis Costello preformed Van's songs.

A fromer Miss Irland and television performer the rumor is that Van came back to the hotel and found her in bed with the jockey that won the Irish Derby. That didn't do much for the relationship but did influence the choice of songs on the album like
"Russian Roullete" "Days Like This" and "Underlying Depression."

They ultimately reconciled and married and had two children.

But the ups and downs produced a pretty great album.

Sorry if that is more than you need to know about Van's love life.

But you see Irish people love to be depressed. Just sayn'

Brian Kennedy is featured on "No Prima Donna" on two great covers: "Queen of the Slipstream" and another one of my favorites "Irish Heartbeat" where Brian duets with Van's daughter Shana Morrison.

I highly recommend "No Prima Donna" for Van Morrison fans but I really, really recommend "Vanthology" where some of Van's greatest hits are covered by blues and R&B artists. It is simple fantastic and any fan of Van the Man will love it and run it on your ipod over and over and over.
