Back off, mister. That's the government's job.

Wow, apparently the cops don't have anything better to do. It took two of them to wrestle this spry old fellow into submission.

I'm going to assume it's not illegal to house the homeless.

Back in the old days, back when they were called "bums" instead of "the homeless," wasn't it the cops' job to just beat the shit out of them to get them to move on?

PROGRESS!!11!!1!!!!!!!

Not exactly the same, but along a somewhat similar vein, there used to be what where called "sundown towns."

If you were of the unwelcome type, usually some kind of ethnic minority, sundown meant it was open season on your sorry ass, so you'd best move along.

I don't think those towns exist any more.

PROGRESS!!!!!11!!!!

Context

Context is everything. Places like here in Santa Monica - known for many years as "The Home of the Homeless" - eventually had to pass and enforce laws to suppress this kind of thing because public spaces including even city hall were being overrun by homeless who were migrating in from all over to enjoy accomidating policy combined with plentiful free food and services. They made the place a mecca where unmotivated people could actually live comfortably without any effort to support themselves. It made choosing to be homeless a reasonable option, which is immoral in my opinion, as it would be to offer free heroin and meth. It similarly robs you of your ability to be a full human being and a contributor to society. I'm all for helping the homeless, but it should always require something in return, some effort, some reciprocation, because otherwise it involves no dignity and does more harm than good. Raise the bar codger. If you really care about them, don't just feed their bellies - feed their souls and their humanity, and give them some future beyond begging. People do what they have to to survive, so ask a little more, and maybe they will soon be helping others themselves.

Without denying the validity of bagoh's points, it's still a dick move. They could have fined him or confiscated his food to greater effect. There are those who wish to make the police look foolish, and it's not so hard to do in a case like this.

The truth of the matter is that one of the things that a homeless person in America needs least is food. I know many of them and very few are skinny, and if they are, it's not for lack of food but for a preference for other things instead. The local government should be finding ways to employ these people, but we can't do that unless they make a very nice salary with full benefits and a pension.

Just pay them to pick up litter, sort recyclables, repair potholes, feed and house stray dogs, wash city vehicle, and a thousand other things that government should and could be doing at very low cost if they didn't insist on paying the equivalent of a lawyer's pay to get them done.

Or, forget all that macho shit and
learn to play guitar.

I agree. People want to feel good because they toss some homeless guy some food or a dollar but they're really enabling his self-destructive life.

Most of these people are ill, disturbed, or suffering from alcohol/drug abuse and need to be off the streets and in some sort of treatment.

Step 13 in Denver. It works. Democrats hate it because, well, IT WORKS and it doesn't involve tax payer money or political graft.

If Democrats cannot waste our money or stuff their own pockets, they never support it.

Great ideas, Bagoh. I elect you for king of the universe.

"Hands up! Put down that plate."

I never give money to homeless. We know what they spend it on. Making it illegal to give them food, however, is beyond stupid.

It isn't that he is giving them food. It is that he is doing it in a "public" location where it will draw more homeless to hang out and defecate in the bushes. If he were to do it in another location, I would hazard a guess that it would not be illegal.

Just like feeding the pigeons from your lovely park bench. At first it seems like a nice idea and the birds seem to be grateful. But soon you have flocks of angry pecking pigeons demanding more and more food. Squawking and pestering you. Pooping all over the place and making it impossible to enjoy your peaceful park bench anymore.

You gotta be cruel to be kind.

Teach the men to fish, don't hand it to them.

When the open dumps were fenced in in northern MN about 15 years ago, the welfare bears totally panicked. Many had never learned to hunt very well, and there were more than the natural food supply could support.

A lot had to be trapped and killed.

The tyranny of kindness is hard to see, but it is a way to make people stay submissive.

I'm having are hard time with the fact that everything is illegal. Police state rounding up father Ted. Nuts.

April, quite right. I think if they permitted this only out of town or in some out-of-the way area, it'd be fine, and some of the motivation to do this would dissolve (I.e., visibility).
