On Hatred

“A thorn in your side will drive you to find someone or thing to remove it. Therefore, don't hate your enemies. Thank them. Without them, you wouldn't have traveled as far in your life to find peace and happiness.”
― Shannon L. Alder

“He couldn't think of a good place. At first he thought she hated all living beings equally. Lately he had come to believe he held a special place in her heart, just below rattlesnakes, pederasts, and spirochetes. Definitely a tough place to start from, but determination had always been Conal's strong point.”
― John Varley, Demon

“Love is wise; hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other, we have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don't like. We can only live together in that way. But if we are to live together, and not die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.”
― Bertrand Russell

“... in a cycle as old as tribalism, ignorance of the Other engenders fear; fear engenders hatred; hatred engenders violence; violence engenders further violence until the only "rights", the only law, are whatever is willed by the most powerful.”
― David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

“Will any man despise me? Let him see to it. But I will see to it that I may not be found doing or saying anything that deserves to be despised.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“Most people who spew hatred aren’t very intelligent or motivated. They tend to be lazy, and if for some reason they are coaxed into picking up a pen, their messages are mostly incoherent and largely illiterate.”
― Damien Echols, Life After Death

“My request today is simple. Today. Tomorrow. Next week. Find somebody, anybody, that’s different than you. Somebody that has made you feel ill-will or even hateful. Somebody whose life decisions have made you uncomfortable. Somebody who practices a different religion than you do. Somebody who has been lost to addiction. Somebody with a criminal past. Somebody who dresses “below” you. Somebody with disabilities. Somebody who lives an alternative lifestyle. Somebody without a home.

Somebody that you, until now, would always avoid, always look down on, and always be disgusted by.

Reach your arm out and put it around them.

And then, tell them they’re all right. Tell them they have a friend. Tell them you love them.

If you or I wanna make a change in this world, that’s where we’re gonna be able to do it. That’s where we’ll start.

Every. Single. Time.”
― Dan Pearce, Single Dad Laughing

“The paradox of anti-Semitism is that it is invariably up to the Jews to explain away the charges. The anti-Semite simply has to make them.”
― Jack Bruce

“Hatred only tarnishes the soul that carries it.”
― D.B. Harrop

“The hatred of hatred is still hate.”
― Ralph Dominic Castro

“The greatest spiritual leaders in history have all preached love for others as the basis for all happiness, and never did they accompany such mandates with a list of unlovable actions or deeds. They never said, love everybody except for the gays. Love everybody except for the homeless. Love everybody except for the drug users. Love everybody except for the gang members, or those covered in ink, or the spouse abusers. They didn’t tell us it was okay to love everybody with the exception of the “trailer trash,” those living in poverty, or the illegal immigrants. They didn’t tell us it was okay to love everybody except for our ex-lovers, our lovers’ ex lovers, or our ex-lovers’ lovers. The mandate was pretty damn clear, wasn’t it?

Love others.

Period.”
― Dan Pearce, Single Dad Laughing

“Islamo-Fascism is NOT the result of economic deprivation or legitimate blowback because of Western foreign policies or even heinous drone attacks on Muslim civilians. All non-Muslims as Infidels, regardless of their faith or lack of it, are in an ideological war with a demonized, freedom-hating Muslim death-cult rooted in their accurate interpretation of the Qur'an!”
― Gary Patton

“Staying with detractors is like sleeping in a room located just behind the public toilet. You will never feel comfortable until you relocate.”
― Israelmore Ayivor

“Not all ‘whites’ are racists. Not all racists are ‘white.”
― Mokokoma Mokhonoana

“We should never let another person get under our skin to the point that we feel hate for them”
― Daniel Willey

“Many people today agree that we need to reduce violence in our
society. If we are truly serious about this, we must deal with the
roots of violence, particularly those that exist within each of us. We
need to embrace 'inner disarmament,' reducing our own emotions of
suspicion, hatred and hostility toward our brothers and sisters.”
― Dalai Lama XIV

“An insincere critic of a sincere person never wins.”
― Criss Jami

“You need to forgive people you don't understand; if not, try to understand people you want to forgive.”
― Shannon L. Alder

I'm a very happy person. I accept the world as it is. In fact, I like it the way it is. The world as it exists in the chaos of billions of different critters is far more interesting than anything I could imagine and summon into being.

I'm not trying to change it.

Hatred is healthy.

If you love something, really love it, you hate that which is dedicated to tearing the thing you love down.

Example: I love the West. Therefore I hate Harvard.

I also hate Bertrand Russell, that quintessential elitist, who spoke of tolerance in the same way that a Harvard don speaks of tolerance while damning to the outer darkness anyone who would question the global warming religion or the socialism equals compassion lie or the centrality of the worship of homosexuality as the sine qua non of a "saved" world.

Unknown said...

Certainly there are things worth our ire, (like Harvard, The NY Times, Paul Krugman, radical extremists who murder innocents, and Hillary!) Haz reminds us, with brilliant quotes, that it is unhealthy to carry around the hatred. Let it go. Especially regarding the petty and the personal, the envy, and the people with whom we disagree.

I will change the world, dammit! Not all of it, at least not all at once, but it's like the butterfly effect, and I have it all figured out. I will be a famous hero in history, unappreciated until the year 2525, when a planet inhabited by flying pigs is named in my honor. You wait and see.

Rachael Analmus is a great name for a porn star.

She could take up the mantel of Erica Boyer.

Is distain hate?

As I don't remember ever hating anyone. Well, perhaps, except for my stepfather, and a few momentary moments after that fucking gook shot my squad leader, whom a few moments later, died in my arms.

Though reflecting now, even that wasn't hate. It was just fuck you motherfucker, I'm going to kill you. Which I did, with help.

Haz made a great post. Sorry for intruding.

Just that the older I get the less influenced I am by amorphous quotes by those who've done little, except write.

Trooper York said...

Erica starred in several famous porno's of the 1980's she was a frequent co-star of Ginger Lynn, Kay Parker, Raven and other all stars of the porn world.

She specialized in Anal as she was a confirmed lesbian and didn't like guys. But hey a girl has to make living.

@Crack - I'm going to leave the comment you made at 9:59 up so that others can understand how hatred presents itself.

You know what, Crack. I once judged, and admired you by your character, your writing, your directness, tint of no matter.

You've changed, not for the better.

Trooper York said...

Eric Boyer hated dick. That is why she specialized in anal. She would be called in to service the plot as well as the most well endowed male porn stars.

With all that she was a talented actress. Often compared to Philip Seymour Hoffman because of her love of heroin and Butt Sex she is pointed to as a roll model to little girls who want to be in porn. She did a stellar job in "Hannah Does her Sisters" as she really could get into the lesbian storyline. She was a light and saucy or should I say well lubed presence in "I Said a Butt Light", "Buns and Roses" and "This Butts for You."

However her seminal performance ( heh seminal) was in Charlie Diamond masterpiece "Backdoor Babes."

XRay said...

Sometimes, Trooper, you tell me more than I'd really care to know.

Not that it offends me in any way, just that it concerns matters I don't give a shit about. Like gay anal sex for example, I don't need details, imagination is bad enough.

Though, carry on.

Trooper York said...

You know not everything is about gay's XRay.

Just from a practical point of view hate is debilitating. It takes energy that could be better deployed elsewhere. I just don't ever think that hate is a good strategy.

Agreed.

We might as well agree some time.

Hating distracts me even from doing my work.

And here's some Crack bait. When I really get pissed off, I calm my mind with yoga, or bicycle riding. Exercise is a great way to get rid of the emotional stress of anger and hatred.

You enemies intend to distract you with anger, which is a very good thing to remember. Get angry. Lose.

sakredkow said...

Yes, me too. It's one of a number of useless responses that drain our energy. They're not bad or immoral, they're counterproductive. I wish you the best with that.

Though you misconstrued my comment, perhaps, in thinking it was directed to gays, or their particular behaviors. It wasn't.

It is a tough corner you seem to be in, traditional, but writing as if anything goes and it is okay.

Though it is more likely I'm missing the nuance.

Trooper York said...

Well yes I am traditional. But humor is different than real life. You can make a joke. But treat real things as not a joke.

This also is completely in accord with what I believe. In a very practical way our enemies/adversaries 1) tell us things about ourselves we could never learn anywhere else; and 2) are the perfect teaching tool for learning forbearance, timing, discipline and control.

You could do worse than to learn from your enemy and then show your respect and gratitude.

Trooper York said...

Michael is a very strict hall monitor so we should talk about what we hate. I will start:

There's a ladder of escalation that I believe works: make your enemy your friend, negotiate, reason, avoid, escape, fight.

Kill if you have to. But I don't see any need to make room for hate in there.

I frequently ask myself why do I comment on blogs. Why do I even read them at all?

No point in going into all that right now, but I just wanted to mention that sometimes I find it helpful to think of the process as interacting with a machine, like I'm a rat in a Skinner box.

Sometimes I find it helpful to match my impressions of other commenters with people I've known in the past or with people I know in the present.

For example, there's this guy who's a sales clerk at this retail store I go to regularly. I have a definite opinion as to the quality of his mind. What if he's one of the people commenting on this blog? Does that change anything and if so then what?

A long time ago I became commited to the idea that I'm no better than anybody else and that it's good to always keep learning and that everybody has something to offer. Everyone has something valuable to teach.

I just wanted to say that.

Icepick said...

Trooper, I just checked A-M-House front page. They're averaging (at that point in time) just under 40 comments on their most recent 20 posts. A lot of that is driven b 114 comments about genital mutilation (Why is it okay for skanky white chicks in Ohio to mutilate their genitals, but not so much for women in Somalia), and another 158 about Woody Allen. The only other posts with more than 50 comments were on racism (52) and Starbucks (54).

So that 25 was a little low, but not far off.

Now the test would be to look at this time from last year (second Tuesday in February) and see how it did, but I already feel dirty for clicking over, so someone else can do that.

Even the gay football player story only generated 47 comments.

My wordiness went at a gallop, when a canter was more appropriate.

I make broad approximation, but most, if not all, here, still think for themselves. Though not immaculately immune to popular misconceptions the attempt to maintain individuality a strong force. No herds.

I hated snails and toads and frogs
And strange things living under logs
I hate dancing with Crazy Ted
He's always jumping on my head.
I hate rain and snow and hail
Moby Dick, the great white whale.
I hate shoes that pinch your toes
And people who squirt you with a garden hose

But, mmm, I love onions.

People as diverse as Phx, Bags and Ritmo duke it out but always seem to come together at the end. Just not in a gay way. Just sayn'

Everyone's good with me here. I owe Amartel an apology.

I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare.

I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you're always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.

I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
